DETROIT | Zack Greinke wont pitch the seasons final game Sunday in Minnesota after all. Not because of injury but due to mounting concerns regarding his career-high workload. Weve readjusted, manager Trey Hillman confirmed. Were going to go with (Brandon) Duckworth on Sunday. Greinke improved to 13-10 by pitching seven scoreless innings Tuesday in a 5-0 victory over Detroit. It was his 23rd quality start in 32 outings and pushed his innings total to 202 1/3. Hes already at 80-plus innings over what he had last year, Hillman said. Thats a lot. A good measuring tool for a young pitcher is (an increase of) 25 to 50. The decision could have an impact on the American League Central Division race. The Twins entered Wednesday trailing first-place Chicago by 1½ games. ... Source: mvn.com --- 22 days ago

There has been some talk of making some trades in the offseason and a name that has come up often is Zach Greinke of the Royals. I am here to say this is a really really bad idea. In an espn.com article today there was this little nugget: Greinke has thrown 202 innings, 80 more than last season, so Royals general manager Dayton Moore, manager Trey Hillman and pitching coach Bob McClure don't want to push him any further beyond his limit. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&page=pennantpulse/080926 ... http://www.brewcrewball.com/2008/9/26/622616/we-do-not-want-zach-greink But I would take Gallardo off their hands in a heart beat. Like I've been saying with the way Shealy has been playing I'm very happy going into spring training with Butler/Shealy/Kila splitting 3 positions Butler should get atleast 550 at bats and Kila Shealy could both reach 400 as long as one of them pinch hits every single game It's pretty funny. Like we would give up a top 10 MLB pitcher next year. Here is our rotation Greinke = sub 3.00 ERA Meche = 3.50 ERA Free agent Royal to be = sub 4.00 ERA Davies = sub 4.00 ERA Hochevar = 4 ERA Bannister = death in offseason ... If you were the Royals GM and were offered Rick Ankiel, Brian Anderson and Clay Mortensen from the Cardinals for Greinke, would you do it? Is it too little for Greinke? Is it too much? Would you want Greinke? Anderson has hit at every level in the minors, even though he's always been young for the level, and an average defensive catcher. He hasn't hit for power, but is still filling out and has that potential. I'd imagine he's the 2nd or 3rd best prospect in the Cardinals system and probably ranks in the top 5 among catching prospects. Mortensen is a good starting pitching prospect who's had a good year in the minors this season. He was a 2007 draftee. Ankiel is one year away from free agency (and is a Boras client), but plays a good defensive CF (allowing DeJesus to move elsewhere), has very good power, and is still developing as a hitter and outfielder. However, he has a high strike out rate and is somewhat of an injury risk. Is this a fair deal? Would it help the Royals enough? (as a Cards fan, I think it would help the Cardinals) If you wouldn't do this deal, what do you think the Royals can get for Greinke that would be better? Do you think the Royals will indeed trade Greinke? ... Source: www.royalsreview.com --- 24 days ago
Steven St. John & Nate Bukaty (sp) just interviewed Buster Olney on 810 AM in KC. At the end of the interview, Buster talked about how there is 'growing talk' that the Royals will probably trade Greinke this off-season. That he is too good of a chip, that could return 2 or 3 'really good young players' back to a team that really needs a lot of pieces. He said the talk has been that the Royals in the past have had really high demands on anyone that asked about Greinke, and given his season this year, he doesn't see any reason why KC will have to lower their asking price after the season he put up in '08, and since he is seemingly past his mental issues. His thoughts are whichever team loses out on Sabathia will be stuck with a mediocre FA class, and will be there for KC to deal with. Of course, he mentioned the usual suspects, NYY & BOS. His personal thoughts are Boston, just b/c of Allard whispering in Epsteins ear... Take it for what it's worth... ... Source: mbd.scout.com --- 15 days ago

Some Young Starters that might be traded this off-season: Jake Peavy , Padres: He won the 2007 Cy Young Award and posted a solid 10-11 record with a 2.85 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 173 2/3 innings this season. He is under contract for the next four seasons, at salaries of $8 million, $15 million, $16 million and $17 million (with a $22 million option for 2013). But he has become increasingly vocal in his frustration with the Padres, and with the team reducing its payroll to something in the neighborhood of $50 million this year, Peavy's salary will increasingly become top-heavy within the San Diego budget. General manager Kevin Towers has been quoted as saying the Padres have no untouchable players, and there are executives who say they think Peavy could be taken for the right package of prospects. Peavy has a full no-trade clause and would have to agree to any deal. Zack Greinke , Royals: In retrospect, he probably was rushed to the big leagues, and he lost almost a full year while coping with his anxiety problem; at age 24 (he turns 25 in three weeks), Greinke already has four-plus years in the big leagues, leaving him two years away from free agency. Given his talent and his improvement over the past two seasons, he has put himself in position for a huge payday -- maybe the kind of money that the Royals don't typically spend. To put this in perspective, remember that Daisuke Matsuzaka got $52 million at age 26 in a situation when he ... Source: www.topix.com --- 5 days ago
