It was a sea of red. If you did not wear red to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights home opener, you stuck out like a sore thumb. The stadium roared for the team when they took the field before opening kickoff. However, Greg Schiano’s squad never gained motivation and played flat, resulting in a 24-7 loss to Fresno State last night. Rutgers football has many questions to address, while their fans' hopes of a national championship began deflating in every section of the stadium in Piscataway. The first half looked promising for the red team as they put together two good-looking drives. The first ended in a turnover on downs as Schiano decided to go against the proven coaching normative and go for it on a fourth-and-goal on the three-yard line. Fresno State’s defense supplied the stop and kept the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard. The second drive resulted in a field goal attempt for freshman kicker San San Te, who kicked the ball nowhere near the uprights. Another decent Rutgers drive put them across the 50-yard line, only to see a Mike Teel bomb miss its target by about 10 yards and fall into the hands of a Fresno State safety. Nevertheless, Rutgers was handling the defense—it just wasn't converting drives into points. The defense was impressive in the first half, holding Fresno State to zero points as well. Despite a few first downs, Fresno State was unable to move an inch on the Rutgers defense. As the cannon fired at the end of ...

One of the truly wretched stories this young college football season is how the wheels haven't just come off the Rutgers Football program, they've flown off in the direction of a busload of metaphorical orphans. Not only is Rutgers 0-3, but they're being booed at home, the team seems to be in disarray, and their starting quarterback Mike Teel is taking swings at his teammates. The Knights' embattled quarterback did what a lot of Rutgers fans probably want to do at this point: He took a swipe at a teammate after his latest interception -- his sixth this year against one touchdown pass -- sealed Navy's 23-21 victory with 1:34 to play at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and sent Rutgers to its first 0-3 start in nine years. Fittingly, the way the season is going, he missed. It's scary to think how quickly Rutgers has gone from out of nowhere BCS contender to train wreck. And it's not just Teel's play that's concerning. Schiano's press conference after the game was a small disaster by itself when Schiano couldn't explain why the team's leading rusher didn't even see the field. "That was unfortunate,'' he said. "For him not to get any touches, that wasn't the plan. Sometimes the game gets going and you have a hot hand and you keep riding that hot hand. But we wanted to use three backs. " I would have to investigate further. and look - there was no padlock on my headset, I could have said, 'Put mason in there.' It was just, we had gu ... Source: loserswithsocks.com --- 31 days ago
The ESPN crew calling tonight’s UNC/Rutgers game made an observation that I’ve noticed for the past two seasons - Greg Schiano no longer appears to be enjoying himself as the head coach of Rutgers. Rutgers may have been an overnight sensation in 2006, but Greg Schiano is back desperately searching for answers after a 13-10 loss at Cincinnati in an ugly Big East game dropped the Scarlet Knights’ record to 1-5. The seniors have underachieved. So called stars like Tiquan Underwood, Courtney Greene and quarterback Mike Teel have underperformed. The offense has become punchless. And there has been no real leadership. Wow. That’s a mouthful. It is obvious Schiano has not been able to replace the players he lost last season. There is no Ray Rice to bail this team out, no offensive line to plow the way, holes in the secondary and defensive line. In recent days, Schiano has been asked about his recent recruiting classes and there are even growing thoughts Schiano should consider playing more than one quarterback. It’s just been one of those seasons everyone wants to forget, especially if the Knights finish 3-9 - or worse. Next game: home against UConn. They should beat Syracuse and Army. Right? ...
