ATLANTA — Big-ticket penalties and an anemic offense finally caught up to Duke in the third quarter. Georgia Tech RB Roddy Jones scored on a four-yard toss play at the 3:59 mark to put Tech up 10-0, but only after Duke CB Jabari Marshall was flagged for pass interference on third-and-15 from the Duke 28 three plays earlier. Duke, which hadn't had trouble scoring or moving the ball in its first four games, couldn't do either in Atlanta and started losing the field position battle in the quarter. Duke's best field position was starting its second drive of the second half at its own 30. That gave the Yellow Jackets mostly short fields to work with. They started drives at their own 20, 43, and 47 during the third quarter. Georgia Tech did everything right except punching the ball into the end zone in the first half when it led 3-0 on Scott Blair's 20-yard field goal. After stopping Georgia Tech on its final drive of the half, Duke made a big mistake when Duke sophomore special teamer Abraham Kromah caught the Tech punter on the foot and was tagged for roughing the kicker. Duke's defense bent plenty as the Yellow Jackets dominated the clock (17:10 to 10:25 of possession) and the field (215 to 49 yards of real estate). Duke didn't break. Greg Akinbiyi led the charge with a sack, a forced fumble and several plays behind scrimmage. Duke's first series hinted at trouble, as wideout Eron Riley couldn't grab hold of a possible first down ca ... Source: activerain.com --- 1 day ago

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Darren Evans ran for two touchdowns, quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for another and No. 20 Virginia Tech defeated Western Kentucky 27-13 on Saturday. The Hokies (5-1) built a 27-3 lead early in the third quarter and were on their way to an expected rout of the Hilltoppers when their offense began to sputter. Western Kentucky (2-4) added a field goal late in the third quarter, then recovered an onside kick, suddenly making the game interesting. They then drove 50 yards without a quarterback on the field, choosing instead to snap the ball directly to running back Dexter Taylor. David Wolke came back on the field and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Jones that made it 27-13 with 11:58 left in the game. Western Kentucky went three-and-out on its next possession, and the Hokies held on. Wolke was just 7-of-19 for 49 yards for Western Kentucky. Dexter Taylor and Bobby Rainey combined to carry 22 times for 150 yards. Dustin Keys had field goals of 22 and 27 yards for Virginia Tech, which lost starting tailback Kenny Lewis Jr. to a ruptured Achilles' tendon in the third quarter. The injury will sideline him the rest of the season. Tyrod Taylor finished with 125 yards passing for the Hokies, before being replaced by former starter Sean Glennon with 8:58 left in the third quarter. Taylor hit Greg Boone with a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-0 with 2:11 left in the first quarter, and Evans' first touchdow ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 1 hour ago

The Dallas Cowboys had already said they won't discipline Jones, so that means the cornerback will play Sunday at Arizona. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail Friday that the league's review won't be completed until next week. He didn't provide a specific time. It is unclear if the league will take any punitive action against Jones, who only six weeks ago was fully reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell from a 17-month suspension, including the entire 2007 season, that followed a series of off-field problems. Jones got into a scuffle at an upscale downtown Dallas hotel late Tuesday night with one of members of a security detail provided by the team to be with the cornerback at all times. ... The following is an assortment of plays, organized by drive, pointing out the plays that either killed the drive or enabled its success. BENGALS FIRST OFFENSIVE POSSESSION . Bengals lined up in single-back formation, with two wide receivers on the left, one on the right and Reggie Kelly at the right Tight End spot. Kelly sprinted up three yards and turned; while Palmer threw a fastball before Kelly broke. The pass was about a yard to Kelly's left, who was likely unprepared for the pass -- or Palmer expected Kelly to go up three yards and then out. Unfortunately, Kelly got a hand on the ball tipping it slowly to Greg Ellis to intercept the easiest pass in his career. COWBOYS FIRST OFFENSIVE POSSESSION . After the Bengals offense threw a pick on the first play of the game, the Bengals defense prevented the Cowboys from picking up a first down. Plus, I wanted to showcase Dhani Jones on the first two plays, and point out the missed third down conversion that was an efficient pass away from being a touchdown. On the first play (a three-yard run by Marion Barber), Dhani Jones lined up five yards deep over the left guard. The Cowboys ran a Power-O with a pulling left guard. Jones followed him meeting Barber, standing him and dropping him after a three-yard gain. The Cowboys lined up in shotgun formation, with Jason Witten at the left Tight End spot, two wide receivers on the left and a third on the right -- Barber lined up in the backfie ...
