On board Greenpeace's Esperanza , currently docked in the Port of Cairns, English is not the common language. According to one crew member it's "internationally broken English". With sixteen different nationalities on board though, including engineers from the Ukraine, a cook from Mexico and a captain from New Zealand, it's little wonder. Ultimately, says one member, words are only a small barrier compared with having the 72-metre vessel rock "65 degrees" from starboard to port on the high seas, who describes the moment to me as his "scariest experience" on board with wide eyes, as if he's still there. For those working on board, while shifts and work time varies, "Tom", one of the crew Members, estimates that he never works less than 70 hours a week, before adding that it usually takes him about a month on land to physically recover. Many of the faces on deck are red and worn by the sun and the sound of crew chiselling rust off the many nooks and crevices on the stern and starboard make conversation at times impossible. The Esperanza will stay in Cairns until August 21, before heading north to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. None of the crew mention or are willing to declare what they will be doing specifically during their time there. For the crew of 17 though, who work three month stints in a variety of roles on the ship - including a "garbologist" - the cause rather than the romance of the high seas, gives purpose to their time abo ...

Congress is about to send President Bush legislation that will make toys safer for little tots and infants. In an agreement announced on July 28th, Congress will ban the use of six toxic chemicals, called phthalates, that are added to vinyl plastic to make it flexible. Thank you to the 8,000 Greenpeace activists who took action and wrote their Members of Congress on this very issue. Your support helped over come heavy lobbying by ExxonMobil who manufactures phthalates. ...

Hundreds of thousands of potential voters will pass through Albuquerque over the next several days. Their purpose: to eat too many breakfast burritos as they sip hot chocolate and take in the spectacle of the annual international hot-air balloon fiesta. But this year - a presidential election year when Americans are worried about the economy and feeling the pinch of growing energy pressures - some groups are using the event to share their points of view with as many people as possible. Armed with his clipboard and dozens of voter registration forms, Chris Foster greeted some of the people who poured into Balloon Fiesta Park early Saturday. Fellow volunteers for Barack Obama's Democratic presidential campaign were stationed at other entrances and at park-and-ride locations throughout the city, he said. Their goal has been to register 30,000 voters in 30 days, and the deadline to register in New Mexico is Tuesday, he said. "This campaign is very important to us," Foster said. "This is a perfect thing here at the balloon fiesta." Across town, Members of the international environmental watchdog Greenpeace geared up to launch their new Stop Global Warming, Save the Climate balloon. The balloon is colored like Earth to get people thinking about global warming, organizer Kristin Wheeler said. "This is a historical and cultural event for the state of New Mexico," she said of the fiesta, first held 36 years ago. "It's a great way to elevat ...

© WWF" border="0" align="left" hspace="4" vspace="2" /> With Europe’s plans for tackling climate change coming to the decision-making stage, WWF and other leading NGOs challenged Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to show their leadership. The Time to Lead campaign, supported by the Climate Action Network Europe, Friends of the Earth Europe, Greenpeace and WWF, follows months of criticism that Europe has dropped the leadership baton in the race against climate change. At the latest round of UN climate talks in Ghana last month the WWF climate team reported that a range of countries including Norway, Switzerland, Mexico, South Korea and India were wresting the initiative from the EU. Telephone messages from European citizens were broadcast in the Place du Luxembourg from midday yesterday near the European Parliament building, challenging MEPs to “answer the call” and take voting positions consistent with avoiding the most catastrophic effects of global warming. Callers were greeted with the recorded announcement: “Thank you for calling the European Union. I'm afraid no European leaders are available to combat climate change at the moment. If you are calling about keeping global warming below 2 degrees please leave a message after the tone.” Time to Lead is a high-profile, on-line public campaign which will keep citizens up to date with the EU’s discussions, what they mean for global temperatures and who in Europe is taking t ...
