Filed under: Etc. , Transportation Alternatives , Japan Most people are under the impression that trains are a reasonably green sort of transportation. When used in a city to move people about, the environmental benefits seem pretty obvious. Fewer cars are needed on the roads, decreasing congestion and electric trains are more efficient and create less air pollution than their automotive brethren. But apparently that's not good enough for some folks in Kagoshima, Japan. They realized if they placed some midori (green) around and under the train tracks, not only could they improve the appearance of their town but also reduce the heat island effect caused by acres of concrete and pavement. In the newscast discussing this development a reporter takes a temperature reading while standing on the asphalt street of 62.6 degrees Celsius (143.96 Fahrenheit). Moving over to the grass, the temperature drops to a much more reasonable 35 degrees C (95 F). So far they've done just under 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) but hope to green about 9 Km (5.5 miles) by 2012. The effect on the people of the city seemed positive. The one comment the reporter received from a woman about the improvement that we could understand without an interpreter said it looked beautiful. We agree. Thanks to B.T. for the tip! At Living Liberally we are increasingly thinking of new ways to create a more sustainable environment here in New York as well as nationally. America's obsession with cleaning supplies and air fresheners has become a full time job for advertising strategists who have been known in recent years to market products towards younger and younger consumers. There has been a large increase in commercial cleaning supplies since the 1950s which has caused a lack of information on the ingredients of the products that Americans are using in their homes and workplaces. These air fresheners normally include a combination of benzene, trichloroethylene (TCE), and formaldehyde. These chemicals have been shown to be hazardous to the environment as well as questionable in their safety for humans. As we spend an increasing amount of time indoors, our breathing space suffers. Thanks to improvements in insulation in buildings there is very little room for these chemicals to escape. What results is a hazardous breathing environment for everyone. Plants are a natural solution to this problem as well as an aesthetic one. They pull carbon out of the atmosphere bringing the best part of the outdoors home to those of us who a rely on the synthetic wood on our desks as the only part of nature that we touch. Some do a better job than others as these natural air purifiers. Some are also better for specific pollutants in the air depending on your workspace or home, ...

A chief obstacle to the true Greening of the meetings industry is air travel. According to USA Today, on a New York-to-Denver flight, a commercial generates 840 to 1,660 pounds of carbon dioxide per passenger — what a typical driver generates with an SUV in a month. Now, imagine the carbon footprint of 10,000 attendees flying into a Denver convention — even one planned with the intention of being Earth-friendly. ...

- Real estate investment company Ardenbrook Inc. announces that the 7901 Oakport Street Office Building, located in the Port of Oakland Business Park in Oakland, is embracing the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and other related green initiatives. The building will be turning to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED-EB designation, which is tailored to existing properties. "We as a long term value owner have an incentive to invest in Greening existing properties. After all, the notion of turning brown edifices into clean, green machines is anything but a new idea," says William Mathews Brooks, President of Ardenbrook. LEED-EB certification is the gold medal standard in the race to energy efficiency. Certification means an existing building has achieved a rating from the U.S. Green Building Council based on six categories, ranging from cleaning issues to systems upgrades and maintenance to meet green building performance standards. "We will be sweating the small stuff," property manager MJ Williamson says. "Utilities are the largest operational cost for the building, accounting for 50 percent of overall costs on average. Coincidentally, it is the easiest to realize savings. Our goal is to reduce energy costs by 30 percent. Much of this challenge involves educating tenants." For building owners, energy savings are easily quantifiable and go directly to reducing the operating costs of the building. That data ...
