The International Energy Agency has called upon governments to take "urgent action" to address climate change by deploying effective policies in support of renewable energies. The IEA says the potential for renewable power is huge, but administrative hurdles continue too block the sector's expansion. It says almost 50% of global electricity supplies would need to come from renewable Energy sources such as wind or solar power in order to cut carbon emissions in half by 2050. “Governments need to do more,” Nobuo Tanaka, executive director of the IEA says. "Setting a carbon price is not enough. To foster a smooth and efficient transition of renewables towards mass market integration, renewable Energy policies should be designed around a set of fundamental principles, inserted into predictable, transparent and stable policy frameworks and implemented in an integrated approach.” He says only a limited set of countries have implemented effective support policies for renewables and there is a large potential for improvement. In a report called, Deploying Renewables: Principles for Effective Policies , the IEA says renewable policy design should reflect five key principles: The removal of non-economic barriers, such as administrative hurdles, obstacles to grid access, poor electricity market design, lack of information and training, and the tackling of social acceptance issues; The need for a predictable and transparent support framework ...
