Tim and I were going through jobn listings for him, looking at what’s available or what will be available to him after he graduates in December. [Another draft-pile post from this summer when it felt like I couldn't finish *anything* I started. --fl] Ann Bartow of Feminist Law Professors highlights a study on the hazards of "marrying up" that she got from Historiann ...she considers the findings, which she asserts support a conclusion that "Women, much more often than men, are in marriages that don’t privilege their career tracks." Men’s and women’s academic careers start off relatively equally, but 6 to 10 years out, men are more likely to have tenure or jobs outside of academe (generally with higher salaries than those for professors) and women are more likely to have jobs off the tenure track. She said it here. Towards the end of the theme song for the 1965 American TV comedy " Green Acres " the husband who wishes to move to the country sings "You are my wife..." and his partner warbles with resignation "Goodbye city life..." The lines went largely unremarked because at the time it was a foregone conclusion that, even if the woman worked, a husband's career opportunities pretty much determined where the couple was going to go. From conversations with academic couples there's also evidently an institutional two-for-one tradition where it's assumed that if you hire one candidate on a tenure track his or (less frequently, evidently, at least for now) her partner will be over a barrel anyway so why "waste" another tenure position on them? Unless it's a town with a lot of colleg ...

Speaking of greening things up and the greening LEED ening of the world, we ran across this interesting press release about a massive, very Green production studio complex being built in Plymouth, Massachusetts called Plymouth Rock Studios . Headed up by mega-firm Gensler, the campus will sit on 240 Acres and feature things like 14 sound stages, a hotel, office buildings, theaters, and so on. Just gigantic. And they're making sure it's all as Green as it possibly can, with their LEED standards in place and even registered with the United States Green Building Council , giving it the possible title of "world's first completely 'Green' studio complex." That it's being built in Massachusetts confuses us a bit, as we're always a little concerned when gigantic production houses sprout up outside of LA's grip, but hey, if they can do it and make it all work somehow, we give them the official UnBeige blessing and wish them many good fortunes. Carrie Tait, Financial Post The colours are beautiful in northern Alberta this time of year: the blue sky, the yellow larches, the Green spruces, the black bitumen, the steely-grey of the upgrader at Syncrude. Shell Canada Ltd., on a push to prove to the rest of the world that Alberta's oil sands are not the source of all environmental evil, is shepherding a short bus full of journalists around Fort McMurray this week. Readers in Billings, Mont., and Seattle, and viewers in Finland will soon learn about Shell's Albian oil sands mine, as well as Syncrude Canada Ltd.'s upgrader, reclaimed Acres and its bison herd. James Smith, Shell's UK country chair, is also here on his rookie voyage to this part of Alberta, under which is believed to be the world's largest oil reserve outside Saudi Arabia. He’s getting a lot of questions, most of them from environmentally concerned Europeans, about what's going on up here, and just how clean are those tar sands, anyway? Mr. Smith, joining journalists in Oil Sands 101, is taking pictures and shooting home video, too. There are trucks everywhere — huge trucks. With a payload of 400 tonnes, the world's largest trucks strike awe in even the most experienced oilpatch vets. Quasi-exotic animals, too. Mr. Smith got a good shot of wood buffalo running around one of Syncrude's resurrected wildlife habitats.   After a day of tromping around Shell's five-year old Albian mine, and another half day spent gaw ...
