Video games are always something I buy used, if I can. Oh sure, there's nothing like unwrapping a pristine copy of "Grand Theft Auto IV," but in general, video games don't deteriorate as they move to the second-hand market. The gaming industry doesn't make money off of a second-hand sale. And that's a "critical situation" for publishing giant Electronic Arts , an executive with the company told GamesIndustry.biz . How to fix the problem? Shifting the revenue focus online by adding more online content and tools to games. EA is clearly annoyed with used-game sales. It's trying to make the case that by selling so many second-hand games, retailers actually cut into the revenue they would get from new game sales. (I can hear GameStop laughing already). But EA is smartly not going to take this fight to retailers. That's a lost cause. The company is better off selling online addons for games, such as new maps, levels and characters. ... TWO-ZZZZ-DAYE! (Hukd on Foniks werkd for us!). Hey everybody! It's Humpday Eve, and even though Tuesday is the ghetto day of the week, there's always something good in every day. For example, last Tuesday our trailer park got approved as Section 8 housing so now we can use those assistance credits we got last year using that "other" Social Security number we bought from that guy in the park. Well today was no different and we got two free matinée movie passes for getting our oil changed at Speedy Lube. Okay, it wasn't our oil (or even our car), but we're sure the owner will appreciate our concern for his vehicle and we're also sure he'll never leave it parked outside of the RanchMart with the engine running again either! But let's not dwell on the technicalities of what constitutes Grand Theft Auto. Let's talk about the movies! As you all know we just completed the 2008 Riding4Beer World Tour and part of that journey was crossing Siberia. It took us over a week and we did it all by train - the TransSiberian Express as a matter of fact - but did you know that there's a movie out called "TransSiberian" and it stars Woody Harrelson? Neither did we, (and judging from the other three people in the theater neither does most of America) and so we figured that for the sake of comparing our experience with Hollywood's ideas we should use our free tickets this afternoon and see it. Many people may think I'm a hypocrite for even playing this game; I played GTA3 once and was repulsed with the utterly antisocial foundation of the oft-described 'kill cops and hookers' game. Well, if that you really think I'm stupid enough to simply change my mind and decide I want to spend my time killing digital cops and hookers, than I guess you: a) don't know me very well, and b) shouldn't bother reading the rest of this entry. GTA4 is a monolithic game. Costing over $100 million to make and meticulously recreating NYC, from geography to climate, GTA4 represents a masterpiece of computer programming simply from an artistic standpoint. No other game I've ever seen so utterly envelops the player in an environment that is all but physically tangible. In most cases, the only changes made are to the specific names of locations and landmarks (Statue of Freedom vs. Statue of Liberty.) It is truly remarkable from that standpoint alone and for anyone that doesn't play video games, this is genuinely a remarkable achievement in and of itself. You simply feel like you are in NYC. GTA4 is also the first true sandbox game I've ever played. A sandbox game is one where, should you choose, you can abandon the story, the missions, and every pre-planned aspect of the game and do whatever you want. The game provides a vast array of activities that extend beyond the core campaign. You can go shopping; go for helicopter tours of the city (there are 5); ...
