Yesterday I blogged about choosing an XMPP server . Once you've made this decision, it is time to get it set up and running great. If this is your first XMPP server, this is often just some software installation and a little bit of configuration. However, for those who already have an existing set up, or who have special data or run time requirements, this can involve a substantial amount of work. It took us about a week to move from jabberd2 to ejabberd at Chesspark , and this is how we did it. While I talk mostly about ejabberd and jabberd2, many of the issues are similar to those any deployment or redeployment would face. What We Knew At The Start There were three main things that we need we needed to work on in order to transition to ejabberd. These were authentication, data migration, and porting a custom server module. Authentication . Many sites already have a user database they they want to reuse for the XMPP service. This almost never looks like the bare bones schema that the XMPP servers are configured to use by default. The first task then becomes to configure the XMPP server to authenticate from this custom user data. Jabberd2 is a lot more configurable for database authentication than ejabberd. For starters, it allows you to define the SQL query used to authenticate users right in the configuration file. I admit it. I think I like China Smack. I know I drop by there every once in a while and though I often feel like taking a shower afterwards, I keep going back. Truth From Facts does a good job describing what China Smack is all about and, in doing so, explains its appeal: ChinaSMACK is one of my favorite new China blogs. It translates some of the hot topics in China’s online forums and bulletin boards, complete with pictures, video, and numerous reader comments translated from the original Chinese posts. The author seems to favor the more lurid stories, such as a confrontation in Wuhan between a Wuhan bus driver and several passengers. Half of me feels like I am learning more about real life in China by reading China Smack, but the other half just flat out finds it fascinating. Its most recent post is on a handicapped street artist and like so many of its posts, the comments are equally riveting. The commenters bemoan the lack of opportunity for the handicapped in China. Following on from the excellent Brothers in Arms series, Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood, comes Gearbox’s new entry to the WWII shooter franchise, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. The trailer, while pretty gruesome, also shows off some of the game’s marquee features, such as the destructible environments, slow-mo kill-cams and, most obviously, the intense graphical fidelity and ‘cinematic’ sequences. The hallmark, tactical aspect of the game, allowing players to order specific squads into position, is probably in there somewhere as well. Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway releases on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this week in the US and Europe on the 24th and 26th of September respectively, while the rest of the world can expect it next week on the 3rd of October. KXAN reports : The shirt shows the LBJ mascot as a grim reaper who is cutting the head off of the Reagan mascot. Some LBJ officials are claiming the T-shirt is just trying to drum up school spirit since the game is on Halloween. However, some parents are not happy with the shirt's message. Parents claimed that they try to teach their children that violence is not the answer and this shirt is not helping sell their message. What do you think, Austin? ...
