After starting the season 5-0 and a 49-28 win over previously No. 19 Central Missouri last week, the Pittsburg State Gorillas were bound to move up in the polls at some point. Indeed, in the latest AFCA Division II football poll, the Gorillas (5-0) moved up one spot to No. 6 heading into this Saturday’s matchup with No. 7 Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats (4-1), off their 42-0 steamrolling of then-No. 5 Nebraska-Omaha also jumped up one spot to their current ranking. They are the highest-ranked team in the poll with one loss. The Mavericks (3-1) dropped 11 spots after their home loss to Northwest to No. 16. Central Missouri (4-1), who gave up 560 total offensive yards to the Gorillas on Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium, dropped three places to No. 22 in the poll. They are the only teams currently ranked in the Top 25 this week. Valdosta State (4-0) remained the No. 1 team in the country after their 33-14 win over West Alabama. They will take on No. 14 Delta State at 7 p.m. Thursday in Valdosta, Ga. Grand Valley State (4-0) continues to hold down the No. 2 position and North Alabama (5-0) remained at No. 3. Even with a 21-14 win in the waining seconds of their game with Missouri Southern Saturday, the Pittsburg State Gorilla football team did not move up or down in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II Poll. In fact, the top nine teams remained the same from last week. The Gorillas stayed at No. 6 in the poll. No. 1-ranked Valdosta State held firm, despite their game with Southern Arkansas postponed due to weather issues surrounding Hurricane Ike. No. 2 Grand Valley State received two first-place votes this week after its 36-0 blanking of then-No. 25 Saginaw Valley State. North Alabama remained in the third spot after its dominating, 45-20, win over Henderson State. No. 4 Abilene Christian beat Texas A&M-Commerce, 45-14, and received two first-place votes this week. No. 5 Nebraska-Omaha won its first MIAA game, defeating Emporia State, 41-20. No. 8 Central Washington extended its record to 3-0 after its 31-24 win over Western Oregon. No. 9 Northwest Missouri State held off a late Missouri Western State surge to win its MIAA opener, 42-35. Bloomsburg jumps into the Top 10 this week after blanking Mercyhurst, 24-0. Carson-Newman dominated Bentley, 59-18, and moved up one spot to No. 11, as did Indiana (Pa.), who moved one notch to No. 12 after a 63-3 thrashing of Millersville. Tuskegee beat Benedict, 37-14, and is ranked No. 13. No. 14 California (Pa.) blanked Lake Erie, 54-0, and jumped two spots in the poll. No. 1 ...
