I'm sure by now we are all aware of the Netroots Nation conference that happened in Austin, Texas last weekend. Well, did you know that without Al Gore it wouldn't have happened? That's right, since Al Gore invented the Internet... I know, I know, that is the old Al Gore joke where he famously claimed that he invented the World Wide Web. Everyone knows that Al Gore had little to do with the Internet, of course. But at least one person, obviously one rather easy to bamboozle, still thinks Al Gore did invent the Internet and one paper is happy to help her tell the world about it. In fact she thinks he invented all the technology inherent in that Internet. And she is currently the Speaker of the House of Representatives, sadly enough. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi attended the Nutrooters gathering and, as reported in the Houston Chronicle, let loose with this gem while introducing Al Gore to those assembled: "Without him, there would be no Netroots Nation. There wouldn't be the technology." Huh? Without Al Gore "there wouldn't be the technology" to have an Internet based gathering like Netroots Nation? She has to be kidding, right? Nancy, um, I'd like to help you out, babe. See, Al Gore didn't invent the Internet and he is NOT responsible for any of the technology that is connected with it. Not a single line of code did he write, not one piece of hardware was created by the former VP and current global warming snake oil salesman. ...

A presidential campaign ought to be an occasion to debate big ideas that set the nation's priorities, but they rarely turn out that way. Instead, candidates compile small ideas and buzzwords into policy papers, while the press focuses on style, spin and strategy. The biggest idea to hit this year's presidential campaign came from someone who hasn't been on a ballot in eight years. Al Gore last week took crises raging in energy, foreign policy and climate change and wrapped them into a challenge that is as big as the circumstances demand: He called for America to switch 100 percent of its electricity generation to clean, renewable sources in 10 years. Gore's contribution to the energy debate is valuable on several counts. First, while voters are obsessed on prices at the gas pump, he puts the focus on the electrical grid. Wind and solar power are further along than most people realize, he says, and can be competitive on price with electricity derived from fossil fuels. The nation's power grid needs to be updated anyway, and great gains in efficiency can be made in the process of linking places where wind and sun can be best tapped for energy to places the energy is needed. Concentrating on electrical generation also focuses on major public and private investments that can fit a 10-year program, without forcing people into carpools or dense housing clustered around train stations. It addresses transportation secondarily, planning fo ...

In a recent TV commercial, T. Boone Pickens says he's been an oil man all his life, says we're importing 70 percent of our oil, says we're spending $700 billion every year for oil, says it's the largest transfer of wealth in history, says we need to shift to alternative sources of energy, says we can't continue to rely on oil as a source of energy and says we can't "drill our way out" of the energy situation we are in. ...

Al Gore gave a speech last week challenging America to run on 100 percent zero-carbon electricity in 10 years, says the Wall Street Journal.  Gore claims a transition to carbon-free electricity generation in a decade can be achieved almost entirely through the use of "renewables" alone, meaning solar, geothermal, wind power and biofuels.  Here are some inconvenient facts: In 1995, the United States got about 2.2 percent of its net electricity generation from "renewable" sources, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). By 2000, the last full year of the Clinton administration, that percentage had dropped to 2.1 percent. By contrast, the combined share of coal, petroleum and natural gas rose to 70 percent from 68 percent during the same time frame. According to EIA estimates: The use of renewables (minus hydropower) could rise to 201 billion kilowatt hours per year in 2018 from the current 65 billion. Total net generation in 2018 will only be 4.4 trillion kilowatt hours per year. That would put the total share of renewables at just over 4 percent of our electricity needs. Gore makes no mention in his speech of proven technologies, such as nuclear power or the equally carbon-free hydroelectric power.  His case is further undermined by America's past experiences with renewable sources, which have generally not been positive, says the Journal.  Like wind power, solar power also suffers from the problem of intermittenc ...

Swen is not an Al Gore fan, but enjoyed the film “an inconvenient truth” (a global warning). I’m comfortable saying that his hope of getting us of fossil fuels is not realistic in the next decade.
