Source: googland-dev.blogspot.com --- 3 days ago Google Apps Developer Blog : Integrating with Google Apps using Gmail contextual Gadgets At this week’s Campfire One event, we launched the new Google Apps Marketplace , making it easier for you to create applications that integrate deeply with Google Apps and sell them to the more than 2 million businesses and 25 million people who use Google Apps. In addition to the many integration points currently available for Google Apps, like the Google Data APIs , we announced that we will soon open Gmail contextual Gadgets as a new extension point for developers. These Gadgets can smartly draw information from the web and let users perform relevant actions based on the content of an email message, all without leaving the Gmail inbox. For instance, contextual Gadgets currently available in Gmail can detect links in emails to show previews of documents, videos, photos, and more , right inside the messages. For businesses, Gmail contextual Gadgets can boost employee productivity by complementing email in a context-specific and actionable way. Appirio , a cloud solution provider, provided a demonstration of the potential of Gmail contextual Gadgets and other experimental features with their new product PS Connect : Appirio PS Connect shows how Gmail contextual Gadgets can draw data from different web applications into relevant email messages, enabling users to make faster and more informed business decisions as they go through their inbox. Source: venturebeat.com --- 5 days ago A few hours before Google officially announced its Apps Marketplace , I had a chance to interview someone at Google and a partner company about the announcement. They offered a more details about the news, and also hinted at where the marketplace going from here. Again, the Apps Marketplace is an online store for outside companies to sell applications that integrate with Google Apps, the search giant’s bundle of office apps including Gmail and Google Docs. Thanks to protocols like OAuth and OpenID, as well as application programming interfaces (APIs) built by Google, users can log into these apps through Google, they can be accessed from the same menu as Google’s, and data can be pushed back-and-forth. Apps Marketplace Product Manager Chris Vander Mey told me the marketplace is basically a replacement and expansion of the Google Solutions Marketplace, a store for business apps that “complement” Google. As described above, apps int he new marketplace are much more closely integrated with Google’s. Google will also be launching its own flexible payment platform later this year (and taking a 20 percent revenue share) so you don’t even have to handle the payments. Vander Mey also mentioned an upcoming feature showing even deeper integration — a “contextual gadget” in Gmail. Normal Gmail users should already be familiar in this, where YouTube videos linked to in messages also show up as widgets in your emails. Apps in the marketplace wil ...

Source: blisted.breakthrough.tv --- 11 days ago photo courtesy of UNHCR via flickr Google has launched Person Finder, a way for loved ones to find each other in the aftermath of 2010’s Chile and Haiti earthquakes. Indeed, traditional relief efforts in the form of medical care, shelter, food and water are invaluable, but Google has come up with a different kind of aid. The Person Finder tool, available both for Chile and for Haiti , allows people to either search for a missing person or to enter information about a person that others might be looking for. According to Google, its engineers developed the program in less than 36 hours after the Haiti earthquake and quickly translated it to Spanish after the more recent earthquake in Chile. As of Tuesday, March 2, the page had 55,000 records and it continues to be hit with more and more entries each moment. Photo courtesy of geek.com The notes left by earthquake victims and loved ones run the gamut from devastating to hopeful: “Hi, Dad. It’s your daughter Alicia. I’ve been looking for you for several days. I’m very worried for you. Please can you call me on my cellular … or send me a message. I’m waiting for word from you. Hugs.” “Mom and Dad are fine and they are still in El Yeco. They’ve contacted us via email and they are doing as best they can. Their house is still intact, and they had lost electricity for 12 hours, I am assuming they have it back.” Bringing families back together, reducing anxieties and spreading hope, Google’s ...
