So does Google have anything up its sleeve, when it comes to the Android mobile communications platform? It better have. Because expectations keep getting lowered. And Apple keeps raising the ante, at least in getting attention for new mobile applications. According to a Forbes.com dispatch Thursday Google “will probably announce the finalists for its Android developer contest sometime in late July or early August.” It was supposed to be July 21. But bet on the results of this second round of the challenge being August 5, based on the note posted in Googling Google on … July 19. 'You want it? You can't have it' Google isn't just hiding the Android SDK from the world's developers. It's teasing them with it. Yesterday, just as we finished detailing the search giant's shabby treatment of mobile-minded coders, it treated them even worse, dangling its secret software developer's kit just under their proverbial noses.… ... Google erred on the conservative side by offering its new Android SDK to only the 50 winners of the Android Developer Challenge. My guess is that Google's Android mission will now be full disclosure of the SDK and its overall open-source development practice. - Google made a critical faux pas July 14 when it sent out a new Android software development kit to only the 50 winners of the Android Developer Challenge. How very un-open source of it. But Google might have even erred more greatly in responding to the issue, as a spokesperson told me July 18:... ... Source: www.computerworld.com --- 7 days ago

Looks like Sprint Android lead Jake Orion didn't really mean it when he said the Google Android team needed to "address industry fundamentals pragmatically" in a recent interview published-- and then retracted --on the AndroidGuys site . In the original article, Orion said those pragmatics include the need for: "more proactive and direct linkage to the carrier’s network and service requirements. Also, a more stable development and testability process -particularly during the time critical carrier test and debug phase. Read more ... Source: osdir.com --- 7 days ago
From the Who Wha!? dept.: Google vowed that its Linux-based Android mobile platform would empower enthusiasts and amateur developers, but today we have seen compelling evidence that this is an empty promise. Third-party Android application developers, who have grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of SDK updates, were shocked to discover that Google has been secretly making new versions of the Android SDK available to the Android Developer Challenge (ADC) finalists under non-disclosure agreements. Android started off being a great idea, from a great company, with lots of support from carriers and manufacturers, and an awesome $10million contest to get developers drooling. You might have been playing with Android before and seen it running on some hardware... Not me as we decided to focus on iPhone development and have to drop off a bit of Linux for now (just having one brain is not enough to play with all these new exciting OSes).
