The Champions Tour Bank of America Championship at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord is rich in history. But, without a title sponsor or contract with the course, its future is shaping up more like a scramble. The longest-running 54-hole event on the Champions Tour and the only event played in New England, the Bank of America Championship has been played at Nashawtuc for the past 25 of the Tournament’s 28-year existence. “It operates like a machine,” Nashawtuc General Manager Rick Schulz said, noting the hundreds of hours logged by his staff prepping the course and kitchen for the event. “There is so much infrastructure in place. [The course is] easy to find, get to and park at.” But this was Bank of America’s final year as title sponsor of the Tournament, and the contract with the course has also expired, leaving Nashawtuc’s place in the future of the Champion’s Tour event in limbo. The Tournament has donated more than $4.8 million to local charities, given New Englanders a rare glimpse of PGA legends and boosted area businesses, which annually allocate parking for spectators. “It’s been fantastic,” Tracy West, Tournament director for Nashawtuc Charities Inc., said of the Tournament’s relationship with Concord and the surrounding communities. “We hope to be able to continue to bring them champion-level Golf. On May 19th 2007, while searching for missing US soldiers, Pfc. Matthew A. Bean was shot in the back of the head by a sniper. Several days later, while at Bethesda Naval Hospital, the doctor in charge, who happened to be a 22-year veteran, stated that she had never seen such a devastating brain injury and could not understand how Matthew was still alive. Yet even Matthew could not overcome this injury and died May 31st 2007. After his death, Matthew continued helping others. Several lives were saved because, before his death Matthew chose to be a donor. Dana Bean (Matthew’s father) created the Pfc. Matthew A. Bean scholarship in honor of Matthew. This scholarship goes to a senior at Silver Lake High school where Matthew graduated. Last year (2007) there was a softball Tournament to help raise funds for the scholarship. The 12-team Tournament was so successful, that this year it will be a 16-team Tournament. Now, the Pfc. Matthew A. Bean scholarship is proud to announce the first annual Pfc. Matthew A. Bean Memorial Golf Tournament. This Tournament will be held, Saturday, August 9 at the New England Country Club in Bellingham, MA. (www.newenglandcountryclub.com).
