There are those like myself who still cling to the hope that Rare will one day be able to release Goldeneye on Xbox Live Arcade. It seems extraordinarily unlikely that we’ll ever see that happen, as the game is currently “locked in no man’s land” according to Rare’s Nick Burton. Speaking with VideoGamer.com at the Develop conference last week, Burton talked about the difficulties the game has faced. “That was a tricky one. To be fair, I kind of wished that the differences got sorted out, but obviously there’s the licensing issue for Bond, even if it’s something that’s already come out,” he said. “It’s incredibly hard to solve because there’s so many license holders involved. You’ve got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the license to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees.” Earlier this year, sources told 1UP that the game was killed because Microsoft and Nintendo couldn’t come to terms financially. Burton explained that there’s really nothing that Rare can do, which certainly supports the earlier story. Burton explained, “The ball’s not in anybody at Rare’s court really. It’s squarely in the license holders’ courts. It’s a shame. It’s kind of locked in this no man’s land. There’s nothing on Live Arcade, there’s nothing on Wii.” It simply wasn’t meant to be. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Rumor: Goldeneye, Other Rare Games Headed to ArcadeMicrosoft Shoots Down XBLA Goldeneye Ru ...

What ever happened to the supposed Xbox Live Arcade version of Rare's classic N64 first-person shooter Goldeneye ? It's "locked in no man's land," says Rare senior software engineer Nick Burton. Talking to VideoGamer.com, Burton explained that the main problem lies with the "licensing issues for Bond," and that any re-release means having to deal with the "many license holders involved." "You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the license to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees," Burton explained. It was also reported earlier this year that money issues between Microsoft and Nintendo over royalties were preventing the release of a port. No Bond game has ever replicated the success of the Nintendo 64's Goldeneye , so it comes as a relief to hear that the upcoming Quantum of Solace movie tie-in is heavily influenced by that seminal classic. "We're very influenced by Goldeneye ," said design director Jeremy Luyties in a recent interview with Joystiq. "When you bring up the map, you'll see your hand come up, almost like the watch in Goldeneye . There are a lot of little hidden things like that in the game." "They're like little messages from us as a developer, saying 'Thank you guys for creating such a great game. Here's our respectful take on that experience.' What a huge opportunity," Luyties added. The game, which was built on a heavily-modified version of the Call of Duty 4 engine, is set to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and PC platforms on November 7. Even with the big press conferences over there’s still room for breaking news, just check out the two posts below from Stephen about “ Halo ” and “ Guitar Hero .” Jason’s Pick - Banjo Kazooie On XBLA With Stop And Swop Capabilities : I guessed I missed this at the MS presser. Apparently Rare, Microsoft, and Nintendo can work something out to get “Banjo” up on XBLA, but they can’t figure things out for “ Goldeneye .” What a shame. ...

Great news from the Wiibrew front! Although we haven't heard much on Wii64's development (the Nintendo 64 emulator for the Wii) lately, it seems that one guy (or gal) didn't need it. In a posted video, this gamer managed to run the classic Nintendo 64 game Goldeneye 007 on the Wii Homebrew Channel, with few hitches. According to the poster, this is a Virtual Console inject using the Sin and Punishment WAD. The poster didn't go on to say just how it was done, but as you can see from the video, it was managed somehow. "The secret is the opcodes," the poster said. Some doubters cry fake, but personally I want to believe it's real simply because it's Goldeneye 007 . I just wish Nintendo would hurry it up and release it on the Virtual Console already . The poster's description says that: It's working for the most part. Saving is broken, it doesn't remember anything if you exit. It also has occasional slow downs. Multiplayer worked with two players, I haven't tried with three or four. Is it the real thing then? We'll probably hear more on this soon. Here's the video for your perusal: ...

Ola, Wiibrewers! It's been a busy week on the Wiibrew front this week . Several of our favorite Wiibrew programs were updated this week, including the Homebrew Browser and WiiPhysics. Big news this week is the release of Whiite- Linux , which lets your console serve as a PowerPC-based Linux computer. Any chance we'll see it adapt a Windows or Mac OS anytime soon? Er, probably not. Might as well make a PlayStation 2 emulator for the Wii. Wait, that's actually not so bad. Aw, dang, now I want one. Anyway, enough dreaming and on to the news! Wiibrew Pick of the Week This week's pick of the litter is Guitarfun, a Guitar Hero clone a la Wiibrew. Guitarfun was originally made for the PC, with the keyboard serving as the guitar peripheral. The original author, Hermes , was also the one who ported the game unto the Wii, with some great new features. The best feature is support for a variety of peripherals to serve as the guitar, including a USB keyboard, the Wiimote , or even the guitar peripheral from Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock . Link: Guitarfun v2.7, Guitar Hero clone: support for Wiimote, USB keyboard, GH3 guitar Wiibrew Programs This week sees the successful release of Whiite-Linux, a real implementation of a Linux system for the Wii. The release also features support for many USB devices that Linux already handles, like USB keyboards, mice, and even hard drives. It's a mighty useful system, to be sure. Seeing as a lot of Wiibrew ...

Filed under: Hacks , Nintendo Wii , First Person Shooters The inventiveness of the homebrew scene never ceases to amaze us. Take for instance the above video. What you see in it is, in fact, Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64 running on a Wii with the " Homebrew Channel " installed. The poster of the video states that he was able to get the game ROM working with the emulator used by the Virtual Console version of Sin & Punishment . He gives no details on how he managed the feat, mentioning only that the game works "for the most part" with occasional slowdown and a broken borked save system. Hopefully Nintendo will see this video and, rather than simply order it pulled offline, realize just how much people really want a proper Virtual Console release of the game. Filed under: Retro , Microsoft Xbox 360 , First Person Shooters Having foiled countless doomsday devices, monologuing masterminds and aesthetically pleasing assassins, James Bond has felt the bite of reality and become inextricably entangled in a web of legal nonsense. Though an Xbox Live Arcade version of the classic N64 FPS, Goldeneye , continues to make appearances both in dreams and alleged screenshots , nobody's been able to pull the game out of a web spun by numerous lawyers and license holders. "It's kind of locked in this no man's land." That's according to Rare's senior software engineer, Nick Burton, who recently discussed the game's fate with VideoGamer.com . "It's incredibly hard to solve because there's so many licence holders involved," explained Burton. "You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the licence to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees." Last time we checked, "umpteen" was quite a lot ... at least 37 or so. Burton goes on to explain that the game's release is no longer in Rare's hands -- it's up to the publishers to figure out how Microsoft can get its hands on a Nintendo game starring one of Activision's favorite characters . "It's probably going to go down in the annuls of gaming history as one of the big mysteries." Wait ... the "annuls" of gaming history? What an appropriate misspelling. Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360 , Action Silicon Knights ' long-awaited Xbox 360 action game Too Human is giving a shout out to a N64 classic, according to Wired . Goldeneye 007 , the groundbreaking console FPS developed by Rare , featured a gun called the "KLOBB" - a nod to then Nintendo designer Ken Lobb, who helped out during the game's development. The gun was also the weakest in the game. D'oh! Too Human promises hundreds of items ... and one of them, as Wired has uncovered, is the KLOBB. Not surprising considering that Ken Lobb is now serving as Creative Director at Microsoft Game Studios and is working closely with Silicon Knights on its game. For the record, it has a damage rating of 18. Gallery: Too Human Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Despite widespread interest in a downloadable Xbox 360 or Wii version of Rare's Nintendo 64 shooter Goldeneye 007, licensing issues and other concerns have the project "locked in a no-man's land," Rare senior engineer Nick Burton stated. "The ball's not in anybody at Rare's court really," Burton informed Videogamer . "It's squarely in the license holders' courts. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on [Xbox] Live Arcade, there's nothing on Wii." The Microsoft-owned studio had developed an Xbox Live Arcade port of the game but was unable to successfully acquire the rights from Nintendo, which originally published Goldeneye 007. Video game rights for the James Bond franchise, meanwhile, are owned by publisher Activision Blizzard . "You've ... ...

This is our bi-monthly or so update on the status of Bioware's seminal FPS Goldeneye . The downloadable version of the game, originally released on the Nintendo 64, is trapped in a perpetual no-man's land. It's all-but finished, they say, but the game isn't likely to hit Xbox Live Arcade (or the PSN or the Wii) anytime soon. The legalities are holding up the fun. Here's how Rare senior software engineer Nick Burton puts it: "That was a tricky one. To be fair, I kind of wished that the differences got sorted out, but obviously there's the licensing issue for Bond, even if it's something that's already come out," said Burton. "It's incredibly hard to solve because there's so many license holders involved. You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the license to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees." Like the gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, we can't quit this game, so we will dutifully continue waiting and hope the teams of lawyers and suits get their collective act together so we can finally start blasting fools in Goldeneye.
