Goldcorp Inc.'s   Red Lake mine is expected to increase production starting in 2009, says RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Curran.  "With the completion of the new #3 shaft, coupled with improvements to underground ventilation, the Red Lake mine should see increased production rates in coming quarters, from both improved access to high-grade gold zones and increased hoisting capacity from the new shaft," he said in a note to clients following a visit to Red Lake, Ontario. "We forecast an increase in gold production, from the 625Koz estimated for 2008, to a sustainable level of 800Koz/yr starting in 2009." Mr. Curran maintained his "top pick" rating and $47 price target on Goldcorp stock, noting that cash costs at Red Lake could also be positively impacted as the company reduces its reliance on traditional cut&fill mining and moves towards more long-hole mining in 2009.  As for Red Lake exploration in general, the analyst remains bullish, citing promising future developments such as Rahill-Bonanza, Goldcorp's joint venture with Premier Gold Mines Ltd. and projects from Claude Resources Inc. , Rubicon Minerals Corp. and Cypress Development Corp. ...

Barrick Gold Corp. and Goldcorp Inc. are still bullish on long-term gold prices despite the recent correction in the precious metal, according to a new note from Credit Suisse In a wrap-up of last week's Denver Gold Forum, analyst Anita Soni told clients that Barrick believes the re-emergence of global inflation, low real interest rates and renewed credit concerns will continue to support higher gold prices. Barrick added, she said, that underpinning these issues, is an environment of supportive supply demand fundamentals including declining mine supply and emerging market demand for gold. Goldcorp meanwhile argued that investors are only half way through a longterm bull market for gold, despite the surprise correction that has seen gold fall more than 10% this summer, the analyst wrote. Ms. Soni also said that several producers expect M&A activity to pick up now that the recent pullback in equity prices has provided some attractive opportunities, especially for those companies with large cash balances. Blackmont Capital has reduced its copper forecast, sending price targets lower on Canada's gold giants.  Precious minerals analyst Richard Gray told clients in a note that Blackmont has lowered its copper price forecast to US$3 per pound for the fourth quarter of 2008 from US$3.65. The research firm also now expects US$3 copper until 2012. Blackmont's previous estimates were for US$4 copper in 2010 and US$3.50 copper in 2011.  Mr. Gray said Barrick Gold Corp. will be impacted by the slumping copper prices, due to its copper production at the Zaldivar and Osborne mine. "We are lowering our NAVPS to US$29.50 (from US$30); our EPS estimates by 3% (2008), 10% (2009), and 16% (2010); and our CFPS estimates by 2% (2008), 7% (2009), and 11% (2010)," he wrote. As a result, he dropped his price target on the stock from $53 to $49, but with upside of 47% still available, he maintained his "buy" rating. "Barrick [is] expected to benefit from a flight to quality and liquidity in the gold sector," he said For similar reasons, Mr. Gray lowered his price target on Goldcorp Inc. from $50 to $45, while maintaining his "buy" rating on the stock. His said Goldcorp, which is impacted due to the copper production from the 37.5% owned Alumbrera mine, will see its NAVPS drop from US$24 to US$23, while his EPS estimate falls 9% and 15% in 2009 and 2010, respectively and his CFPS estimate slumps by 6% and 11% over that same period. The analyst also cut p ...

Filed under: International markets , Newsletters , Goldcorp Inc (GG) , Commodities , Stocks to Buy "People want to own more gold when there's a perception of growing global economic and political turmoil," explain resource experts Roger Conrad and Yiannis Mostrous. In their Vital Resource Investor, the advisor offer their long-term bullish assessment for gold as well their favorite gold mining stock: " Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ). "Every commodity bull market eventually ends when consumers permanently reduce demand with conservation and switch to alternatives, and the producers ultimately over-expand. This, however, only happens over a period of many years. "To be sure, we've seen demand in the US drop for many vital resources, from copper to energy, as the economy has slowed. Demand from developing nations, however, remains entrenched by necessity, as these suddenly more affluent nations struggle to upgrade their vital infrastructure. "And although we may see Chinese economic growth slow from its current off-the-chart 10% rate, that country will still face critical needs to build out its cities to meet the millions of new migrants that come every year. And that's a huge call on raw materials. "The bottom line is the key long-term drivers of gold's run this decade are still very much in place. And the metal remains a cornerstone investment. And while the market is spectacularly volatile, we expect much higher gold prices over the next few yea ...
