This weekend we saw one of the best live performances we've seen in years, that of "gypsy punk" band Gogol Bordello , featuring guitars, violin, accordion, Latin percussion, and spastic frontman Eugene Hutz, who co-starred in Everything is Illuminated , and who is partially to blame for the return of the hipster mustache. But we forgive him for that because his band, which is made up of musicians from all over the world, is so amazing live. We just ordered their most recent album, Super Taranta . Highly recommended for people who enjoy rock, ska, folk, reggae, or any kind of Eastern European music. ...

Is there a way to fairly review a Gogol Bordello concert without coming off at least a little bit insensitive of the cultural heritage and social eccentricities of Middle Eastern and Eastern European immigrants? I mean, I’m no Archie Bunker but damn, them folks is strange. That’s not to say it’s not fun. In fact, in the right dosage the unlikely hybrid preferred by lead man Eugene Hutz and company — immigrant folk and klezmer filtered through both punk rock and a weird jump blues — is pretty thrilling and almost impossible to not dance along to. And things are just as overloaded on the visual end, with players dressed in an array of ethnic garbs exaggerated to the point where the whole spectacle looks like a Benetton commercial on acid. So there’s a lot to take in and try to process. Maybe it’s best to not think about it too much. I mean, it’s OK to just mindlessly sing along to catchy tunes like “Start Wearing Purple” or “Think Locally, (Expletive) Globally,” right? That’ll have to do for now. Because the alternative is to realize I spent 60 minutes Friday night watching the “Saturday Night Live” Wild and Crazy Guys sketch dressed up like a rock show. And worse, I kinda liked it. ...

Tomorrow’s Edgefest is sure to be an off-the-chain affair with almost 12 hours of alt-music mayhem. Rodney Crowell From Gypsy punk to singer/songwriter to world musician to Talking Head, the AT&T Stage on Friday, September 26th at this year’s Austin City Limits will host a wide range of talent. The music begins later in the morning, but the final act, Manu Chao, closes out the evening as the night’s final band at 8:30 p.m. As a stage reserved for some of the bigger acts, you’ve most likely heard these guys, or at least heard of them. If neither, well then maybe you should bring a blanket and a smile and plant yourself up front for the duration for some aural edification. Houston native Rodney Crowell starts things off with a treasure trove of songs dating back to the '80s that run between country, folk and rock. He struck up friendships with Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt early on and was married to Rosanne Cash. Then, in the late '80s with his album Diamonds and Dirt he experienced a boom in popularity with a few songs that became #1 hits on the US country charts, such as “It’s Such a Small World” (a duet with Cash) and “I Couldn’t Leave You If I Tried”. He also brought his twang and song to bear in Emmylou Harris ’ Hot Band for a few years. Touring for his debut solo album, Seeing Things , just out this July, Jakob Dylan along with his touring band, The Gold Mountain Rebels , are making landfall at ACL. I woke up the next morning on my couch, tangled in my party dress, still wearing high heels, with blood caked to my bruised knees and a throbbing at my temples no Advil could fix. As my memory came creeping back, I remembered downing shots of whiskey with Dale Crover of the Melvins at the Henry Fonda Theater before Gogol took the stage. I remembered dancing as if possessed and stealing some dude's hat in the mosh pit. I remembered calling a cab... not being able to find my keys... breaking into my own house. It was an epic night and I had the battle wounds to prove it. The musicians in Gogol Bordello are no strangers to whipping the crowd into a frenzy, even if it means a few party casualties.
