Dead Space Zero-G Movie (HD) By now, you’ve probably seen some gameplay footage from the upcoming horror title, Dead Space; so you already know the graphics look impressive. But could you imagine the same engine being used for other games? That’s exactly what EA may be thinking, according to Glen Schofield, the head of the development team. EA is already in the process of naming the engine and making it available for other games to use, like The Godfather 2. No word yet on whether the engine will only be used internally at EA or become available to outside developers as well. Regardless, Schofield hopes that future developers can make their own changes to the game engine down the line to keep it constantly improving, much like Unreal Engine 3. Dead Space certainly does look impressive, so I could actually see future developers using this engine as a jumping off point for other games. Here’s hoping someone makes a game focused entirely around the zero gravity aspect of it, like in the video above. My paid workload is at something like an all-time height this week and into next, so consider this just poking my head in. I've been in this boat for a while, leading a narrowed life. But I did carve out some time last weekend for something special: a first-ever viewing of The Godfather on the big screen, and a gorgeous new print at that. In a recent story in Slate, Fred Kaplan walked readers through the heroically painstaking process through which Coppola's masterpiece, and its even greater Sequel, were restored to their original glory. The quality of the picture and sound, and of course the liberation from living-room scale, made the film a new experience. We noticed details that were easy to lose in the background in previous viewings--a tear in Tom Hagen's eye in one scene and numerous details of setting throughout. But Al Pacino's performance is the element that most benefits from the restoration as far as I'm concerned. It's a more subtle and powerful performance than I knew before. And it's all in the eyes. The transformation of Michael Corleone is tracked as much in his countenance and expression as in his speech, actions, and gestures. Pacino conveys all of this with terrific restraint, building his performance from the eyes out. After the incident outside the hospital, Michael becomes a strikingly more self-contained figure--composed, calculating, and almost shrunken--so that the eyes become his main conduit of expressi ... Historically the greatest film sequels have always taken the best aspects of the prior film and accentuated all of the best features for the follow up. Prime examples of this approach can be seen in Aliens, Terminator 2, and The Godfather 2. Some film follow ups take the easy way out and merely recycle the original flick’s script with new cast members replacing stars that refused to return for another go. Check out the regrettable and forgettable Teen Wolf 2, Lost Boys 2: The Tribe, or Roadhouse 2 for further evidence of this phenomenon. Then there’s the dreaded “everything old is new again” format where they just take the first film and move the plot to some asininely contrived location. Speed 2: Cruise Control is a prime offender of this plot device. For better or worse Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds is a hybrid of all three of these Sequel archetypes. None of the name actors return, (yes I realize that I’m referring to Balthazar Getty, Navi Rawat and Henry Rollins as name actors) and it’s the same plot as the original but this time it’s different…instead of a bar it’s an entire town that’s trapped. See, different! But for the better part of it’s 100 minute run time Feast 2 enters into the good Sequel range by going off the deep end with gross out humor and insane over the top gore.
