Apple Inc. remains on target to surpass consensus estimates in the third quarter, says Citigroup Global Markets analyst Richard Gardner. "Supply chain checks in Asia suggest that Apple’s 3CQ revenue is tracking in line with our above-consensus estimate of $8.3B thanks to surprisingly robust iPod Shipments and in-line PC Shipments," Mr. Gardner said in a note to clients. He added that sharp declines in key component prices also bode well for the company's margins. 16 gigabit NAND flash contract prices are down 37% quarter-over-quarter on average, the analyst wrote, while flat panel and DRAM prices are down as much as 20% and 25%, respectively. Mr. Gardner also noted that field checks confirm that Shipments of new MacBooks have begun, with a sharp production ramp planned for September and an introduction planned for early October. He reiterated his "buy" rating and left his US$287 price target unchanged. David Pett ... Source: seekingalpha.com --- 30 days ago

Filed under: Competitive strategy , Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) , Deere and Co (DE) Investors tend to forget that some of the world largest PC companies are based in China, lead by Lenovo and Acer. The two companies run behind Dell (NASDAQ: DELL ) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) in Global market share. But, that may be changing in a way that the two US companies will find unpleasant. Research firm Gartner looked at PC sales around the world during the third quarter. According to Reuters, " Overall, worldwide PC Shipments rose 15 percent from last year to 80.6 million units." To no one's surprise, growth in the US was slower, up 4.6%. HP's Global market share was 18.4% and Dell's was 13.6%. Acer rose to 12.5% making it the most improved of the three compared with last year. Acer's secret is that it is selling netbooks, small PCs which usually cost under $500. Analysts have questioned whether consumers would want these because smartphones have many of the same functions. Acer has taken the gamble of ramping up production, a potentially risky move if the customers were not out there. The decision is giving them a chance to steal a march on the larger rivals. The Acer move may say as much about what is wrong with US PC companies as its says about what is right at Acer. There are many people, especially in emerging markets, who are not likely to be able to spend $1,000 on a computer. And, the mobility of the US PC user is improving with th ... Nearly a year and a half after the return of Michael Dell to the helm of the company he founded, the PC maker finally appears to be on the verge of making a comeback. According to Gartner, Dell's worldwide PC Shipments increasing a robust 21.9 percent in the second quarter, fueled by the company's ambitious expansion into retail and other indirect channels. Another recent PC shipment report from IDC also indicates that Dell's Global operations are firing on all cylinders. Dell's growth outpaced the market in all regions, particularly in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region, noted Loren Loverde, IDC's PC tracker. The company also continued to see double-digit growth in its core U.S. market, she said. "Dell's aggressive channel partner program and retail expansion should help drive volume going forward," Loverde said. "On the retail front, Dell recently launched a fleet of service centers within Wal-Mart stores to compete with the likes of Best Buy's Geek Squad." Faster Than the Market Dell's share of the Global market rose to 15.6 percent in the second quarter -- up from 14.8 percent one year earlier, noted Mita Kitagawa, a principal analyst at Gartner. The company also achieved more than 40 percent year-over-year growth with respect to its Global mobile Shipments in the last two quarters, she said. Although Hewlett Packard continues to hang on to the top PC sales position globally, its latest 18.1 percent ma ... Source: www.toptechnews.com --- 16 days ago
William Amelio had a nice surprise when he passed through the Sydney airport in September. Wearing a shirt with the logo of Lenovo on it, Amelio, president and chief executive of the Chinese computer company, was stopped by an Australian customs agent. "I bet you have a Lenovo computer in your bag fresh from the Olympics, right?" the agent asked. "We've definitely moved the needle in terms of brand recognition," Amelio said on the sidelines of the Forbes Global CEO conference in Singapore this month. "Few were familiar with this relatively new brand before, and now he's relating Lenovo to computers and the Olympics. We couldn't ask for anything more than that." Lenovo has been a brand only since 2005, when the company -- which sold computers under the Legend nameplate -- purchased IBM's Global personal computer operations for $1.75 billion. Lenovo posted consolidated sales of $4.2 billion for the quarter that ended on June 30, up 10 percent year on year, with its worldwide PC Shipments growing 14.6 percent, roughly in line with the industry average growth. According to Kathy Sin, research manager at IDC Asia/Pacific, Lenovo was the No.4 PC vendor worldwide in the period with an 8 percent market share, behind Hewlett Packard (19 percent), Dell (16.4 percent) and Acer (9.7 percent). Jeremy Sy, head of planning for China at the advertising agency network TBWA, said that from the data he had seen from a couple of different sources, "it see ...
