I was recently asked to share how I soften headshots yet retaining realistic texture in the skin. My particular workflow is based from Christy Schuler's work (looks like her website went away). Although I use Photoshop CS3, this could apply to other photo editors that support layers. In our first phase, we need to do basic retouching, otherwise we'll be adding our problem areas back into the finished image (I'd also suggest working at Actual Pixel size or closer). [att=1] I always start by duplicating the layer and working from the copy. Select the Patch tool (pull down from Bandage - Spot Healing Tool). With the Patch tool set to Source, make an outline of a problem area and drag it to a better area in the vicinity. [att=2] While it is still selected, you can go to Edit > Fade Patch Selection and use the slider to fit. Select > Deselect and move to other areas and repeat. The key here is to look for texture problems, don't worry that about color or blotchiness. Phase Two: Creating our skin layers (one for tone, the other for texture). Duplicate your top layer (the one you just cleaned up). It's helpful to hide your lower layers. Our goal is to erase anything that isn't skin- use the eraser, quick mask, magic wand- whatever works for you (for this exercise, I used Quick Mask to mask the skin from the erasure).
