We thought we'd sold all of these a few months back, but last week we unearthed a box in the ever hectic National Review mailroom, so - if you want a copy of the historic June 28, 2004 issue dedicated to the late Ronald Reagan, buy one here, but act pronto, because these are certain to sell out PDQ if our prior experience is any indication. The cost for this special tribute issue - one of the most popular in NR's history, including reflections, essays, and remembrances from William F. Buckley, Jr., Paul Johnson, Victor Davis Hanson, Rush Limbaugh, Charlton Heston, Edwin Meese, Chris Matthews, Lou Cannon, George Weigel, John O'Sullivan, Otto Reich, Lawrence Kudlow, Steven Hayward, Mark Helprin, Dinesh D'Souza, Richard Brookhiser, William Rusher, Jay Nordlinger, Peter Rodman, Peter Robinson, and Neal Freeman - is $10.00 per copy, which includes first-class shipping and handling. Again, supplies are limited so act swiftly. ... Source: coloradoright.wordpress.com --- 31 days ago

PatriotPost.US, 08-38 Ultimately, the choice before the American people is the choice between two visions: on the one hand, the policies of limited government, economic growth, a strong defense, and a firm foreign policy; and on the other hand, policies of tax and spend, economic stagnation, international weakness and accommodation, and always, always, from them, ‘Blame [...] ... by lestro The Democrats had Dennis Kucinich, The Republicans had Mitt Romney. During Romney’s speech this past week at the convention, the vanquished former governor of Massachusetts and passed-over veep short-lister who ran mainly on the strength of his hair made his pitch to give the Reagan-esque, convention-stealing, oh-shit-we-got-the-wrong-guy speech that Reagan gave in 1976, setting [...] ... Where can we find a leader who is willing to say the things he feels. From the heart. Without the need to spin an answer to suit all people. We need someone like Ronald Reagan, who came straight out, against the advice of his chief of staff and other advisers, and said: “Tear down this [...] ... Source: fredericksburg.com --- 30 days ago

The Reagan video was extraordinary: "The media despised him," the narrator said. True -- but somewhat startling, to hear it said straight out. They called him "a California nutcase" -- true. In recent years, the Gipper has been in soft focus -- a kind of goo surrounds him. Tonight's video reminded us what a political warrior he was, and what ferocious passions -- for and against -- he aroused. At the end of the video, I thought Nancy Reagan would emerge, to wave at the crowd. But no: I wonder whether she was watching, at 668 St. Cloud. (A lovelier street you have never seen.) ... 1. A shame he delivered by satellite, or whatever it was. Looked hokey, sounded stilted. You don't know when to applaud; if you're the speaker, you don't quite know when to pause. And it seems sort of condescending -- like the Gipper talking to the anti-abortion people, who were freezing outside the Supreme Court, by audio hookup. (This was always in January, on the Roe anniversary.) And did he have such important work to do in Washington? Isn't the election of this Republican ticket important work? Is that too partisan? "Grow up," as Joan Rivers used to say. 2. I think Bush should have offered a broader acknowledgement of his differences with McCain -- everyone knows this history, or has a sense of it; Bush could have done more to take advantage of it, rhetorically and politically. 3. "Human life must be defended" -- nice, nice (despite the avoidance of the word "abortion"). 4. McCain will "not wait," Bush said, until America is "hit again" -- very, very good. 5. It was a fine little speech. But think what President Clinton did in Denver -- he gripped the audience, and blew the roof off the hall. And President Bush was -- you know: okay. (But he is still, I pronounce as a coda, a great man.) ...

In a recent New York Post column, Ralph Peters excoriated Palin detractors , "those postmodern bigots with their multiple vacation homes and their disappointing trust-fund kids." Here's an excerpt: "The sneering elites and their mediacrat fellow travelers just don't get it: How on earth could anyone vote for someone who didn't attend an Ivy League school? And having more than 1.7 children marks any woman as a rube. ... And what kind of retro-Barbie would stay happily married to her high-school sweetheart? Ugh. She even kills animals and eats them. ... The opinion-maker elites see Sarah Palin clearly every time they look up from another sneering article in The New Yorker: She's a country-bumpkin chumpette from a hick state with low latte availability. She's not one of them and never will be. That's the real disqualifier in this race. " This is such a straw man argument that I hesitate to bring it to your attention -- except for two things. One, he follows it up with a truly breathtaking conclusion, which I'll share below. Two, The New Republic's Michelle Cottle wrote a great takedown of his feeble argument, which I'll also share below. First, Peters' laughingly misguided judgment: Every chief executive we've had since the Gipper snapped his final salute as president has had the imprimatur of an Ivy League university. And we've gone from bad to worse: * George Herbert Walker Bush: Yale. * William Jefferson Clinton: Georgetown, Oxfor ... Source: blog.oregonlive.com --- 62 days ago
