By Diane Mapes Most people have come to expect a certain amount of wonkiness during an election year, but last week’s vice presidential debate offered something new: winkiness. With a half dozen blinks of her left eye, Republican Sarah Palin raised eyebrows and rampant speculation, inspiring the launch of a new Web site — palinwink.com — and  prompting the British newspaper The Guardian to dub the seemingly flirtatious phenomenon, “Winkgate.” But what exactly is a wink and what does it signify? [Watch the first wink of the debate by going to msnbc.com's Debate Analyzer and clicking on the question "How would you work to shrink the polarization in Washington?"] While blinking may be necessary for healthy eyes, winking is generally a deliberate expression of personality and is a learned behavior, like snapping your fingers, rolling your tongue or raising one eyebrow, says Dr. Roy S. Rubinfeld, an ophthalmologist in the Washington, D.C. area and clinical correspondent for the American Academy of Ophthalmology . “It’s normal for us to close our eyes, to blink; that’s a natural important element of eye health and is unconscious,” he says. “But winking is generally a conscious act, although there are medical reasons that cause people to wink or blink pathologically.” For example, blepharospasm , which causes people to blink or wink in a spasmodic way, is one such condition. Hemifacial spasm , a neurological condition which causes one si ...

Apple today announced a new line of MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers with lighter, stronger casings, powerful graphics, and larger trackpads that offer Gesture-based controls more advanced than the iPhone’s. In addition, they announced an updated version of the Mac Book Air and introduced their first Cinema Display with LED backlighting. You may have been wondering how the gadget industry was going to continue to produce thinner, lighter electronics that can still endure daily use. Today Apple unveiled their answer to that thought with a new line of notebook computers crafted with a “breakthrough” design that sculpts computer casings out of solid blocks of aluminum. The new technique begins with a 2.5 lb block of aluminum and machines it down into ...

It is amazing how many times I refer to the movie Minority Report when it comes to emerging technology. Hopefully we will never develop Precogs that can predict murders, but that Gesture-based interface screen that Tom Cruise uses is something that I want. It appears that an organization known as Fraunhofer HHI has made my dream come true with the iPoint Presenter. This interaction concept uses Gesture based interface on a projected screen, and is ironically more advanced than the one used in Minority Report . Correct me if I’m wrong, but Tom had to wear these gloves that emanated some weird blue light. The iPoint Presenter requires nothing more than a user’s bare hands, as the iPoint Presenter can sense the user’s gestures with its infrared eyes. The interface is a lot like watching an iPhone touchscreen projected against the wall. For example, the user can expand a window by widening the gap between their finger and thumb. Speaking of the iPhone, I can’t help but wonder why the iPoint is somehow related to Macintosh with the “i” in front of it. Maybe it wants to be a Mac product. This interaction can apparently be used on many applications including “interactive POI/POS, games, photo viewers, even Google Earth”. The iPoint Presenter is a concept now, but it is one that I want to see in my house soon. Source Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames , check out our reviews. If you’re a lover of touch-based technology (and who isn’t?) you’ll love the latest design from Fraunhofer HHI, the iPoint Presenter. This tech utilizes a Gesture-based interface to create an experience straight out of Minority Report. The screen is projected and you would then interact with this screen. By using infrared, the user’s gestures with their bare hands can be detected on the screen. It’s pretty cool stuff, actually and it looks a lot like an iPhone on your wall. You can pinch windows, move them around and more by just motioning with your hands. This technology can be used on “interactive POI/POS games, photo viewers, even Google Earth.” However, we’ll all have to wait a bit to see this one in actions. It’s just a concept for now. Why can’t the future be now? Swype is an amazing Gesture-based data entry system that truly blew our collective minds at TC, CG, and MC. To type, you simply connect letters together using a stylus or finger and predictive text to pick letters and words out of seemingly unintelligible squiggles. Above is a video of two of the judges trying out the technology for the first time. (VC Josh Kopelman, who tries it first in the video, doesn't grok it quite as quickly as Twitter founder Evan Wiliams). ...
