In case you hadn't heard, Sen. Barack Obama is on a presidential victory tour of Europe and the Middle East this week. He's going to give what his staff bills as "a major speech" in Berlin on Thursday because Germans can't vote in the American election. But Obama clearly really, really wants that Milwaukee vote. (BTW, we're looking forward to the day some presidential staffer characterizes his boss' speech as "a minor one.") Silly old man that he is, Sen. John McCain, in case you hadn't heard, is still acting as if he's in the general election race, traveling around places like Pennsylvania in the United States talking and listening to people who can vote in the American election. Asked tonight by Sean Hannity his reaction to the overwhelming news coverage of Obama's foreign trip, compared to the underwhelming coverage of his own three foreign journeys this year, McCain said, "All I can do is be amused. It is what it is." (Click on the cartoon to enlarge.) Neither major-party candidate has actually received his party's official nomination. That doesn't come for another month yet. So the new NBC-Wall Street Journal Poll is coming out this evening. And even in this alleged year of the Democrat, with the Obama campaign practically printing money and already running general election ads in Republican strongholds, the new July results will show that the Illinois Democrat's 6-point lead from June has remained exactly the same as in June ... (Berlin) -- Tomorrow Senator Barack Obama will deliver a major speech in front of the Siegessäule , or "Victory Column," in Berlin. He will speak in front of thousands -- some have predicted hundreds of thousands -- in a speech that will mark the first and only major public address of his closely followed overseas tour. People have grown to expect a lot from Senator Obama's speeches, but then, people have grown to expect a lot from Senator Obama. He is hailed, for better or worse, not just as a rising political star and potential future U.S. president but as a bearer of hope -- a savior. True, as the campaign has gotten muddier and Obama has made the American politician's traditional migration to the center, the Senator has lost some of his shine and it seems that in many corners the Obama-worship has cooled into controlled optimism. The Spiegel cover shown above (which reads: Germany Meets The Superstar ) is partly tongue-in-cheek, both an acknowledgment of the Obamamania that has caught fire in Europe and a play on "Germany Seeks A Superstar", the German version of American Idol . Nevertheless among the people (and especially among Europeans, who view him as the glittering Anti-Bush) he remains enormously popular. According to a Spiegel poll 76% of Germans think Obama would make the better President compared with 10% who would prefer Sen. John McCain. Due to a combination of factors, Obama's powerful speeches, his relative youth ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 3 hours ago
In advance of his Thursday address in Berlin, Obama chats with reporters on the plane, Carrie Budoff Brown reports: Asked if he expected a million screaming Germans, as some of predicted, Obama said: "I doubt we are going to have a million screaming Germans. Let's tamp down expectations." He continued: "I did not realize - my staff just told me the space is bigger" than he'd first realized, he told the press, who asked if that was a bad thing. "It is a potentially bad thing," he said to laughs. "We are sort of on the high wire. I was like, 'I'm sorry, how many does this accommodate?'" ALSO, more praise for Crocker and Petraeus. On Ambassador Crocker: "A real unsung hero in this whole process. Incredibly savvy, but humble and self effacing." Petraeus: "An extraordinarily capable person." ... One thing has been driving me crazy about this drilling debate -- everyone seems to assume that if we drill for oil in the US, that we will get the oil. And hence, we won't be dependent on foreign oil anymore. But we won't get anything, Exxon-Mobil will. The oil that comes from that drilling will not be United States property (Republicans aren't suggesting we nationalize the oil companies, are they?). It will be the property of whichever oil company got the rights to that contract. They can then sell it to whoever they like -- and they will. They will sell it on the world market, so the Chinese will have just as much access to the oil that comes out of the coast of Florida as we will. The Democrats have done a decent job of beating back the argument that this will effect prices in the short run, or even in the long run. But no one has addressed the point above. The Republicans make it seem like we won't be dependent on foreign oil -- and that prices will go down in the US -- if we have our own oil. But it won't be ours. And it will be sold on the world market, so its effect on global oil prices will be even smaller. When we ask the question of whether there should be drilling off the coast of Florida or in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we should ask the question this way -- would you be comfortable with the Chinese or the Germans or Russians or the Saudis drilling on American land? Because for all intents and purposes, the ... Source: www.freerepublic.com --- 15 hours ago

How do Republicans counter the crush of attention Democrat Barack Obama is getting this week on his foreign trip? Here’s one tack: While Obama speaks to thousands of Germans in Berlin in tomorrow, the Republican National Committee says it will be airing a radio ad against Obama in Berlin, Wisconsin; Berlin, New Hampshire; and Berlin, Pennsylvania. “While he’s giving speeches in Germany, we think it’s important for voters in Wisconsin to learn more about his record,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant, who said the radio ad would air tomorrow in the media markets that reach the three battleground-state Berlins (in Wisconsin, that would be the Green Bay-Appleton market). Berlin is west of Lake Winnebago. Here’s the script of the GOP ad: "There are few votes as important as funding our men and women in uniform. But when our military needed necessary resources, Barack Obama failed to stand up. Obama said that nobody wanted to play chicken with our troops on the ground. But when it came time to act, he voted against critical resources: no to individual body armor, no to helicopters, no to ammunition, no to aircraft. The bill Obama opposed even had funding for veterans’ medical facilities and rehabilitation programs. And why did he say no? Obama chose Washington politics over the needs of our military. And Senator McCain? As a veteran and someone who has always put the public interest first, John McCain stood by our troops. If Oba ... Source: www.velonews.com --- 13 hours ago

As far as the climb itself goes, it's hard, but was the easiest of the day by far. The fans however ... well, that's a whole other story.
