It's tough to imagine there being a busier writer currently working in the comic industry, or one who's enjoyed more recent critical and commercial success, than Geoff Johns. In addition to writing Action Comics, Green Lantern, Justice Society of America, Rogues Revenge, Legion of Three Worlds and Flash: Rebirth, Johns is also lending his talents to the television show Smallville to bring the Legion of Superheroes to life. He's a busy guy, alright, but despite his insane schedule, Geoff sat down with IGN Comics for a lengthy chat about all his recent work, including his two of the hottest projects in stores today: "New Krypton" and Rage of the Red Lanterns. ... Geoff Johns revealed to Newsarama.com the ideas behind the up-coming "Superman: Secret Origin" miniseries and what fans can expect from this saga... The new official "Secret Origin" of Superman is a project that Gary and I have been planning since we began working together on Action Comics. With the changes going on it made sense for Gary and I to move onto Superman: Secret Origin as a standalone series. The issues are longer than normal and it's given us time to work ahead of schedule. This incredibly important to us and the quality and eventual scheduling, must be perfect. To me, origin stories - particularly "Secret Origin" stories in the DC Comics universe - are vital to the introduction of characters and mythology to the larger audience, and I think they can be to the long time audience as well. We haven't seen a modern day retelling of Clark's first adventure as Superboy with the Legion of Super-Heroes, or the day Superman met Jimmy Olsen or the origins of Superman's long time enemies like the Parasite and Metallo. More importantly, Clark Kent himself will be explored in his earlier years in a way I don't think he's ever been explored before. And freaking Gary Frank, one of the greatest Superman artists in history already, is illustrating it. Every cover, every panel, ever line. For long time readers, with the inclusion of the Legion of Super-Heroes back in Superman's history, General Zod introduced and all the other changes mad ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 5 days ago

ComicBookResources.com caught up with writer Geoff Johns to ask him all about his up-coming "Legion" episode of the TV series "Smallville". Here's an excerpt from the interview where Geoff talks about the three actors playing the part of the Legionnaires... "The Legionnaires did a wonderful job. They embraced the material and along with Glen embraced the lore," said Johns. "They're a great amalgam between 'Smallville' and the comic mythology. They are done in a 'Smallville' way but they are extremely loyal and true to core center to what the Legion is all about. And I was really blown away and ecstatic that the actors they cast could play Legionnaires so perfectly. I think they are phenomenal. "Ryan brought the perfect amount of intensity to Cosmic Boy, similar to the intensity he current has in 'Legion of 3 Worlds'. He really brought a humanity to Rokk too, that goes beyond the page. Ryan embodied the leader of the Legion to a tee. "Alexz is Saturn Girl. You see her and you see Saturn Girl. Her demeanor, and the thoughtfulness that reads on her face at all times is exactly who Imra is. "And last but not least is Calum, who is freaking hilarious. He was probably the one closest like his character - Lightning Lad, who captured the portrayal of Lightning Lad's early years in my head. He's fun, energetic, exciting - literally lightning in a bottle waiting to be unleashed." Read the entire interview at the CBR website . The CW relea ... IGN.com has posted a lengthy interview with writer Geoff Johns, discussing with him the details of his recent "Brainiac" story and the current "New Krypton" story crossing over between "Action Comics", "Superman" and "Supergirl". Here's a portion of the interview... Q: It's obvious from the New Krypton special that these Kryptonians might have a tough time adjusting to life on Earth, and maybe even have some feelings of entitlement. Might we see any Zod sympathizers in this group? Johns: You have to remember back to the beginning of Action Comics #866, the first part of "Brainiac," there were hundreds of Zod's soldiers under his command that were fighting against Brainiac. And Zod at that point was one of the most respected members of Kryptonian society. So you have a lot of loyalists who hear things afterward about the planet blowing up, and the word is that Zod led a revolt against the council, tried to help, and then was imprisoned and banished to the Phantom Zone. Then the planet blew up. Boom. It makes Zod look like he was right. Maybe he was. In "Last Son", we saw Zod say he was going to save this world. He wanted to save Krypton. And Superman asked, "Well, how? You went in there and slaughtered the council. How would you have saved the planet? My father wanted us to all work together, and knew that was the only way to do it. And you resorted to violence as the only solution." And Zod doesn't have an answer to that, but in ... Source: www.supermanhomepage.com --- 7 days ago
MTV.com spoke with Geoff Johns about "Legion", the up-coming episode he wrote for "Smallville". Here's an excerpt from the article... "The concept of the Legion throws a wrench in Clark's life," Johns said. "They've already built up to a huge climax with Chloe and Doomsday, and then the Legion comes in and completely complicates everything." Johns pitched the show on introducing the time-traveling Legionnaires - Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, and Cosmic Boy - by explaining that they would be relevant to Clark Kent's life at this point in time (unlike some other characters who'd been introduced on the show although he wasn't supposed to meet them until later - can you say Green Arrow?). And when the time came to talk villains, Johns brought in a bunch of his comic books to show them how the Persuader would translate in a cameo appearance. "He's one of my favorite Legion villains," Johns said, "because he's this futuristic assassin, he's dressed like an executioner, and he has one of the coolest weapons, an axe that could slice an atom in half. He can slice Clark, so he can slice anything." Read the complete interview at MTV.com . Look for "Legion" to air in the U.S. on Thursday, January 15th in the U.S. ... Geoff Johns has told MTV.com that he would love to pen either a Superman movie or a Flash movie... or both. According to Johns, he has tons of ideas to share... but with them, not us. "I'd rather keep my ideas in a drawer, in case I get a chance," Johns explained. "But I would love to be involved. It was my dream job to see the Legion come to life on 'Smallville,' to get to work with the director, to work with the actors, and I would love to do do more of that, just to introduce more DC characters to the world." Johns said that by doing more adaption work for TV or film or video games (such as he's doing for DC Universe Online), you'd be exposing the characters to a much larger audience than the comic book readership ever could. "You get to capture the magic and get that on film and show other people," he enthused. "If I could do what I did with 'Smallville' on a bigger level, and bring it life beyond the comic books in various ways, that would be my dream." Read the complete article at the MTV website . ... In the 2006 film Superman Returns, Bryan Singer chose not to retell Superman’s origin story. I mean, heck, we’ve all seen the original Richard Donner classic, right? Newsarama reports that DC Comics will be releasing a six-issue stand-alone series called Superman: Secret Origin, which will retell the Man of Steel’s origin story. Geoff Johns and Gary Frank have been hired. DC Universe Executive Editor Dan Didio compares Geoff’s new take on the origin story to that of John Byrne made in the 1980’s, stating that it will make the “same imprint now, for 2009 and past that.” The new take will take readers from Clark’s teenage years, through his first adventure [...] ...
