Oh dear me. There is something to be said about truth in advertising. But you've got to wonder about the communication strategy behind this one. Was NIS2006 THAT bloated that they needed to apologise in a public forum designed to sell the upcoming product? If so, can you imagine the Windows 2007 version. Se la vie! Ullo Ullo. You be uzin Veeeesta? Iss so sllooow. Ullo Windows 2007. Wow. I'm blown away. Credit #GeekList for the link. ...

Thanks again to #GeekList. Hehe. The parody has a point - but still, isn't it amazing how you can just SEE the difference in style. Clunky square vs sheer tech beauty. I think that is the Apple secret at the end of the day. People will "make do" with only one USB if it looks that good. Maybe. ...

In my renewed commitment to be glass half full again, I'm literally copying and pasting this article from last week's Sunday Times - thanks to Toby Shapshak of the GeekList for bringing it to my attention. So I've been enjoying BoardGameGeek.com and have been posting since February. If you're at all interested in board games, I strongly advise you to check it out. I'm looking forward to attending BGG.con this November. Thanks so much to Sonja Elen Kisa for creating a GeekList just about my cartoons (the photo at the top of Sonja's GeekList was taken by Walter and features my friend Andy and me, trying to shoot each other in a game of Cash'n'Guns) And I just found out that Gordon Yu listed me as one of his Geek Heroes ! Anyway, I've been posting some comics and cartoon caption challenges on BGG. You can see comics posted so far in my Flickr set , and I've also included some in today's Blatherpost. Don't be worried if you don't get some of them; I had help from some hardcore gamers for several and they reference specific games. Today's survey: What's the last board game you played? Livejournal comments ...

I'm sponsoring a "name that game" contest as a GeekList on Board Game Geek. The list is composed of 25 board game images modified in various ways to make naming the game not too difficult but also not simplistic. The winner gets to select a free T-Shirt from the store shipped to their door for free.If you think you'd like to take a shot at entering the contest or you just like to have a look at the images, you can find out more information in Matt's T-Shirt Giveaway GeekList.Good luck! ...

Being an avid listener to This Week in Tech with Leo Laporte (and a handful of other tech-podcasts too) one word kept coming up constantly - TWITTER. For a very long time I avoided it because it seemed like a completely useless online application. Why would I want to know trivial facts about what people are doing? For anybody who doesn't know what Twitter or Twittering or Tweets are, I suggest you watch the brilliant educational film "Twitter in Plain English" from the folks at Common Craft. I slowly began to see that any single tweet in itself was truly trivial, unnecessary and not even very entertaining. But a continuous flow of tweets builds up to a complete picture of a person. Part of what's been holding me back so far was the way a few of the profiles on Twitter handled it. It became a competition of who got the most followers, think friends on Facebook. This always irritated me with Facebook as well. Although I do have a Facebook account I do not log in frequently anymore, and to tell you the truth - I don't even know how many friends I have on Facebook. I know Twitter is more for the tech-crowd than it is for the gaming crowd (I concider myself to be part of both), and Scott Nicholsons GeekList for Twitter users among Boardgamegeeks never caught on, but I think gamers can have as much use and fun from Twitter as the techies. Stuff that's too little to write a blog-entry, a session report or a review about. The fact tha ...

So, we got our tax return back the other day and allocated some of it as "fun money" for each of us to blow on anything we wanted. I, of course, spent my share on games. Board games, in this case. My shipment just arrived and I can't wait to try them out. Some of them are family games for me, Barb and Simon to enjoy now, and some are for when the kids are a bit older. And some of the games are for me... ones that I thought the guys would like also. All in all I got: 10 days in the USA , Arkadia , Aton , Blue Moon , Cartagena , Hera and Zeus , Lost Cities , Niagara , Odin's Ravens , Saint Petersburg , The Downfall of Pompeii and Zooloretto . The other day I made a GeekList of all the games I'd like to get to have around the house for the kids (both for now and as they age a bit more. I selected these because a lot of them got good comments on that list. Simon is really looking forward to Niagara. I borrowed it from Steve some months back and he really liked it and keeps asking when we'll get a copy. I also played Zooloretto at Steve's and I think Simon might like that one as well. For our gaming group, I picked out Saint Petersburg, Downfall of Pompeii, Arkadia and Aton, unless there are only two players when any of the Kosmos games might be a good time. Fun stuff. I can't wait to play 'em all! Update: Simon and I played two games of Niagara tonight and it went quite well. I thought I might have to si ...

NO EXISTEEEE!! NO EXISTEEEEE!! ...

For those who've found their way here to the Land of Aka Pastor Guy from BoardGameGeek , the whole concept of a GeekList is familiar. For those of you who hale from other parts of the worldwide web (do we even call it the "Worldwide Web" anymore?) - say, BaptistsWithASenseOfHumorVille or FamilyOfPastorGuy, a GeekList may sound like the scrap of paper that a video game designer takes to the grocery store with him: 24 pack of Coke 2 family size boxes of Cocoa Pebbles 1 mega-size vat of Red Vines toilet paper In this case, it's actually a listing of the game on the Kids Game 100... but, thanks to the wonders of technology, they're listed in BGG ratings order rather than my rather arbitrary personal way of ordering them. (This allows you to compare & contrast - can you tell I was an English major? Next thing you know I'll be diagramming sentences & complaining about people ending their sentences with prepositions.) The actual list is called (oddly enough) The Kid Games 100 . I will be adding games to it as I blog about them here. ...

Recently, a fellow Australian BoardGameGeek user, sbszine , organised a boardgame math trade . There have been some localised Australian math trades before, but this was the first national math trade open to any BGG user residing in Australia. He also organised the first national (that I'm aware of) New Zealand math trade at the same time. So what's a math trade? A math trade is boardgame trade between a whole bunch of people at the same time, using an algorithm to decide who should send their game to whom. Because of the algorithm used, you can only get a game you prefer over what you started with. The worst that can happen is that you may just keep your original game. Here is a link to the GeekList listing all the games users have put up for trade. 51 Australian BGG users signed up and there are well over 600 games up for trade (576 entries but there are lots of multiple game lots). I've put some of my games up for trade. As I've never participated in a math trade before I'm not too sure of what to expect. I'm not overly positive of getting what I want though. I'll post again when I hear the results. The games I've listed. Dross - or not? Who knows, someone may be interested... Worst case scenario is that after the math trade my remaining games will get listed on eBay and I'll use the cash to buy the games I want. ...

Interesting thing popped up on #GeekList today. Go visit WAB.COM . And you'll see... WAB.COM is now the property of the United States government. The domain and web site were surrendered to U.S. law enforcement pursuant to a federal prosecution and felony plea agreement for conspiracy to violate criminal copyright laws. Antonio Del Santos, a.k.a "AloneTrio" pled guilty in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on January 25, 2008, to conspiring with others to violate federal copyright laws by illegally releasing copyrighted code illegally circumvent built-in security protections and allow individuals to run "homebrew" software on game consoles, such as the Sony PSP and Nintendo Wii. Del Santos and his co-conspirators used www.wab.com as the exclusive outlet to provide copyrighted code to individuals. As a result, the WAB website is now the property of the United States government. Individuals involved in this conduct face up to five years in federal prison and a fine of $500,000 for each count charged. Piracy is the unauthorized, willful reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material, such as software, movies, music, and games. People who distribute pirated works over the Internet via IRC, FTP sites, web sites, or file-sharing networks, and people who download or reproduce pirated works are risking criminal prosecution. Piracy is a crime even when the works are distributed over the Interne ...

Check out this GeekList . How many game boards can you recognize once they've been passed through a crazy Photoshop filter? Some you might be able to guess by color, by shape, or by patterns. Some are easier to see at high resolution, and some at low. I had fun with this. A few I had to stare at a while trying to twist my brain into different thinking modes. I might have gotten 20. One I figured out after submitting my answers. How many can you get? ...

L has a little song and dance he does with Z which goes to the Mahna Mahna tune (you know...it was on the Muppets...still don't know? Well, you'll be enlightened further on) but replacing Mahna Mahna with 'Ello 'Ello. It works a treat with Z! So, when I came across a YouTube clip of the song (which most certainly was not in any way featured in a GeekList on Board Game Geek. No. Not in any way) I forwarded it to him for a giggle. L explored some of the other selections which were shown on the screen as well and I now present a little catalogue of Mahna Mahna. Hurrah I hear you shout. First we have the Muppets - Halo 3 - World of Warcraft - And finally Hilary and Obama (a response to the Hilary and Obama version of 'Umbrella'...) - There are plenty more to feast on as well! ...
