As someone who regularly councils consumers to avoid overpriced after-market repair services for computer hardware, I was intrigued by a report from Glassdoor.com (a Web site where employees anonymously dish about their employers) that compares the purported average salaries for Apple and Best Buy front-line tech-support personnel. Both the ... ...

Verizon has announced an expansion of its tech support offerings to include home support for PC hardware and software issues, phone problems, and TV repairs. Pricing is on-par with Geek Squad and AT&T's offering, ConnecTech, but is there room for three players in the home repair market? Read More... ...

Just when you thought your computer and all of its (potentially pornographic) secrets were safe in the hands of Best Buy’s Geek Squad once again, the big-box electronic retailer would like to reassure you with its “Geek Squad Black Tie Protection,” a product service plan intended to “deliver peace-of-mind for hundreds of devices.” While grandiose talk [...] ...

Filed under: GPS , Transportation Comically enough, we already knew that Geek Squad employees took a few liberties with their company car , but this is a debacle. Can you imagine how enraged the poor sap is who was expecting this fool? They probably took a vacation day just to stay home and overpay for some potentially dodgy PC fixer to remove a virus. For shame. Chris: "Late at night -- well after their shifts end -- testosterone-crazed Geek Squad and Firedog employees meet in alleyways across the nation for dangerous games of chicken that all too often end in tragedy." Paul: "Did you unplug it and then plug it back in? Look mom, I'm a little busy right now..." Joe: "Geez... it's called multi-tasking!" Darren : "Hey there Brad from Circuit City! About that job ad on Craigslist..." Don: "But sir, the GPS said I was going the right way." Sean: "Naw, really, I just scuffed up the paint on the bumper and lost the hubcap, the MRI disk is still secure." Nilay : "Helllo... is it possible to retroactively buy that $29.995 PRP plan?" Josh F .: "So I think we figured out the problem with your laptop. Looks like someone dropped it." [Thanks, DS] Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

We think MTV movie blog writer Josh Horowitz is the luckiest guy in the world. Since a new install last week, I was having some trouble with my HR21 connection to my network. I successfully connected but then subsequently lost that connection and couldn't get the HR21 to accept my network setup, which is hard-wired and requires a static IP. So this morning I call DTV and tech support tells me that anything beyond "basic" network connectivity (Hit 'connect' and if it doesn't work, it's out of our realm) is the province of "The Geek Squad" which is a Best Buy joke sub-unit and with whom they (DTV) have a contract to deal with network/internet issues. They (DTV) give me a "passcode" and a number to call. So I call the geeks, use the passcode, and somebody asks me to describe the issue. I do so, and she says, "Well we have three levels of service for DTV subscribers, and we will fix this for you. However, this will require a visit to your physical location, and the charge for that will be $169!! My exact response was, "Not a chance". I must admit that I was fairly incensed about the fact that DTV doesn't directly support their network connectivity. But thinking about it, I decided that one thing I hadn't done was simply shutting down my Linksys router for a minute and powering it back up. After doing that I went back to the HR21, Network Advanced Settings, re-entered all the static IP info and voila! No problemo. Now if only we could get WMP in Vista to play nice with the HR21, life would be good. ...

Company-review site Glassdoor says that according to employees at both companies, Apple's repair technicians — known as "geniuses," with the attitude to match — make $18.30 per hour and $36,000 per year on average. That's about 56 percent more than Best Buy's Geek Squad "agents," who earn $11.58 per hour and $23,000 per year. The reason for the difference? Apple's "geniuses" are tasked with repairing beautiful objects that restore your sense of childlike wonder, whilst their Best Buy counterparts open tickets on junk in black plastic cases. Right, Steve? ...

If you're the paranoid (or lazy) type who yearns for ultimate peace of mind for your portfolio of tech purchases, Best Buy recently announced a "Black Tie" level of Geek Squad tech support. For example, if you sign up for the premium service for your TV, you'll get a free replacement TV after four repairs. Or if your set goes into the shop, you'll get a loaner to keep you in high-def heaven until your display is returned to you. And when you do get your television back, the Geeks will re-install it, re-calibrate it, and use their own sweat and blood to polish the screen to a screaming shine (okay, that last one doesn't seem to be in the literature). The Black Tie coverage is also available for car electronics, cell phones, computers, etc. No word, though, on whether the Black Tie service includes a vow not to rifle through your personal files. ...

I am in shock and recovery from my home laptop crashing.  (I am at the office now).  Chloe, my seven year old was playing and started complaining the computer was not working. I went over and looked at it and there was a message that had an OKAY button on...I click the button and the computer went dead.  I tried to start it up and it does not do anything.  Chloe did not know what she did.  So after a few minutes of frustration and hitting every button on the computer I decided I will have to take it in to see if they (The Geek Squad) can bring it back to life. If anyone knows why a computer would just shutdown and not start again please share that.  I have had computers crash but you normally can restart them.  This one is just dead. Its a year old too.  Thanks.  Please click here to subscribe to my blog  . To roll out their all-new level of Black Tie Geek Squad Protection (the geeks arrive in stretch limousines, carry silver trays, and are all named Giles), Best Buy enlisted the celebrity services of "Four Icons of Protection, Steven Seagal, Richard Dean Anderson and Tanya Roberts," according to the press release. (That's just three, but who's counting?) Our Zune-taunting cousins at Gizmodo were there to catch all the excitement. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the emcee urging him to, "Take this pack of chewing gum, a pogo stick shaft, and a box of nail filings, and make something blow up already!" MacGyver proved to be about as mechanically minded as our mom. Seagal, however, was even more of a disappointment, throwing a fit as soon as he mounted the stage over the intensity of the stage lights. You'd think someone with as much experience starring in a string of marginally beloved martial arts movies, and shredding his blues away on the El Rey stage , would be accustomed to the hot glare of theatrical lighting. If we had to guess, however, we'd say his vampiric reaction might have to do with flashbacks to the powerful lamp shoved into his face by overzealous FBI agents trying to connect the actor to the Anthony Pellicano racketeering scandal .
