D.C. Council may take up Gay Marriage Bill in '09 Local activists say all eyes on Congress, Calif. By LOU CHIBBARO JR Friday, September 19, 2008 If Democrats expand their majority in Congress and California voters uphold same-sex Marriage, a Gay Marriage Bill is likely to be approved by the D.C. City Council as early as April 2009, according to activists and City Hall insiders. With Mayor Adrian Fenty and at least 10 of the Council's 13 members committed to passing a same-sex Marriage Bill, local activists and city officials have long said the only factor holding back such a Bill has been the fear that Congress would invoke its powers to overturn it. “We are reasonably confident that enough fair-minded Democrats will win election to the Ho ... ...

The McCain-Palin campaign presents a certain image of diversity and openness. But what's the record say about diversity and Gov. Sarah Palin? She respected the law and followed the state attorney general's advice to veto a Bill from the state Legislature that attempted to unconstitutionally override a court decision ordering equal benefits from same sex partners. But she had expressed openness during her campaign to the possibility of a voter ballot measure to block benefits as an extension of the state's voter-approved ban on Gay Marriage. And even in her veto message, she hit the same theme: "It is the Governor's intention to work with the legislature and to give the people of Alaska an opportunity to express their wishes and intentions whether these benefits should continue." In another mini-Bush stance, she, of course, supports the ban on Gay Marriage. ...

The hotly-anticipated Sarah Palin vs. Joe Biden is just hours away, and she plans to go on the attack . Perhaps this will hold you until then . The New Yorker endorsed Barack Obama , saying he is temperamentally, intellectually, and emotionally attuned to the complexities of our troubled globe." John McCain has all-but abandoned Michigan . Not everyone in Obama's camp is convinced that's the case. The Dow is down nearly 350 points . Obama supports an $11 billion Bill to reopen the 9/11 victims compensation fund. Yesterday, California Gov. Privacy, wartime executive power, racial preferences, abortion, property rights, cloning, Gay Marriage, school choice, the death penalty, gun control - just a few of the hot-button issues that the federal courts will likely address over the next four years. That's why judicial nominations are vitally important. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were each able to reshape the federal judiciary, filling more than 300 slots apiece, including more than 60 appellate judgeships and two Supreme Court seats. Because federal judges have a momentous impact on law and society, voters need to know what they can expect from Barack Obama and John McCain. ... ...

After offending gays , Asians , and audiences with its ignoble release last summer, the Adam Sandler Gay Marriage vehicle I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry has found itself back in the news this week with equally confounding results. According to the Washington Post (via Videogum ), new legislation that could provide employee benefit programs to the partners of Gay federal employees is under siege thanks to Office of Personnel Management deputy director Howard C. Weizmann, who cites the Sandler movie as reason enough not to put the plan into action: To bolster his point that worries about cheats are realistic, he cited an unusual source: "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," an Adam Sandler movie about two firemen in Brooklyn who pretend they are Gay so they can get domestic partner benefits. "The subject was . . . insurance fraud," Weizmann said. "This is not farfetched." That really upset proponents of the Bill, who said they were astounded by Weizmann's comment. "It is an insult to suggest there is any added likelihood of fraud from LGBT [lesbian, Gay, bisexual and transgender] employees," Leonard Hirsch, Federal GLOBE president, said in a telephone interview. "Currently, the proposed legislation mandates a higher level of certification for LGBT benefit enrollment than for heterosexual employees." It certainly is an insult to suggest that anyone could draw inspiration from Chuck & Larry . Have we seen an uptick in caricatur ...

Be nice to your conservative friends (or, if you don't have any conservative friends, your conservative boss or banker) -- this has been a horrible week for them. First the crash, then Obama's growing lead , then they lost a Buckley , and now Gay Marriage in Connecticut . The state supreme court has overruled a lower-court decision that had held civil unions were good enough for Gay people, and now Nutmeg Staters can just haul off and Gay-marry each other whenever they feel like it. Marriage-equality opponents portray themselves as victims of evil activist judges. "This is about our right to govern ourselves," says the Family Institute of Connecticut ; "Ct. Court Rules against Marriage," cries a National Review editor; "the institution is changed forever, without the consent of the governed," says Jesus freak Rod Dreher . But Allahpundit thinks it's "good for McCain" because 1.) it'll warn everybody Obama wants to make them get Gay-married to Bill Ayers and 2.) something's gotta be good for McCain, right? ...

When Google launched its sanitized version of Wikipedia , called Knol , earlier this year - the topics highlighted were all pretty mundane. Medical conditions, backpacking, etc. Today the company put Knols to good use and used the site to launch the first in a series of debates about topics of widespread general interest. The aftermath of the US financial bailout Bill is the first topic discussed. Sponsor Economists from the conservative Cato Institute and the liberal Economic Policy Institute (EPI) have posted differing opinions as Knols . Now readers can post comments and in theory, recommend changes to the text. (Good luck with that.) This is just the first of several debates Knols will host in the handful of weeks leading up to the US Presidential election. It's a smart move by Google, both politically and economically. Why the Knols Debates Are Politically Smart Google is a company that finds itself taking political stands some times. Last week the company took an official stance against a California Bill that would ban Gay Marriage. On the other hand, earlier this year it colluded with Chinese government censors by removing images of Tienanmen Square from its search results, arguing that engagement is the best way to foster change in a repressive regime and legal compliance is required in order to comply. "We have to do business with them in order to encourage change on human rights" is a convenient argument that's been mad ...

clipped by: queah Clip Source: www.minnpost.com The Log Cabin Republicans endorsed candidate George W. Bush in 2000 but rejected him in 2004 after his campaign used Gay Marriage as a wedge issue in an effort to win over conservative voters, said Jimmy LaSalvia, the organization's programs and policy director. McCain was among a small group of conservatives who opposed the amendment , calling it "antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans." Log Cabin Republicans are optimistic but admittedly in the dark about Palin's positions on Gay and lesbian issues. They cite Palin's veto as governor of a Bill that would have denied benefits to Gay state employees and their partners. However, her reasons for vetoing the legislation are complicated . ...

Is this the first time that a Republican presidential candidate has given an interview to a Gay newspaper? Well, a quasi-interview. The Washington Blade e-mailed the campaign some questions and the campaign drafted answers with McCain's assent. Highlights: Blade: Important Gay rights legislation unrelated to Marriage has been stalled in Congress for some time. You have a reputation for having challenged your party in the past. Would you work with Congress to pass or deal with any of the following: ENDA, the hate crimes Bill, repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell?" McCain: I promise to give full consideration to any legislation that reaches my desk. On "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," I'm going to defer to our military commanders. So far they have told me it's working. I'm willing to have the policy reviewed to make sure that's the case, but at the end of the day, I'm going to rely on the commanders who will be impacted by a change in the law. Blade: Will you support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act if elected president? McCain: Gay and lesbian people should not face discrimination in the workplace. I've always practiced that in my hiring. I select the best people, regardless of their sexual orientation. I support the concept of non-discrimination in hiring for Gay and lesbian people.  However, we need to make sure legislation doesn't lead to a flood of frivolous lawsuits or infringe on religious institutions. What I can say now is I will ...

Over at the Corner, Maggie Gallagher is celebrating the growing support for Florida's Proposition 2, California's Proposition 8, and Arizona's Proposition 102, each of which—if passed—would ban Gay Marriage in those states (and in the case of Florida, civil unions and domestic partnerships as well): Younger voters are leading the swing against Gay Marriage, reports CBS News. Why? My best guess is: a lot of them are parents who don’t really want their schools teaching their 5 year olds about King and King (See the latest ad, at www.protectmarriage.com .)... Meanwhile the Miami Herald is conceding that polls show the Florida Marriage amendment commands a strong majority support. Getting to 60 percent is a big hurdle, but the undecideds tend to break in favor of Marriage amendments. In Arizona the latest poll shows the Marriage amendment is up 49 percent to 40 percent.  It's the Corner , right? No surprise there. But what is surprising is that these developments aren't getting anywhere near as much airtime on the major networks, editorial pages, or blogs as other expressions of convervative bigotry. How is it that chastising Republicans for exaggerating Barack Obama's connection to Bill Ayers (which Michael Moynihan criticizes in the post below) is more important than covering the GOP's efforts at further alienating (to put it lightly) nontraditional families in two of the biggest, most affluent states in the country? (And Arizona—w ...

Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who signed the same-sex civil unions Bill into law, did not welcome today's state Supreme Court decision giving Gay couples the right to marry, but she considers the matter settled. I disagree with today's State Supreme Court ruling but as governor, I will uphold it. I continue to believe that Marriage is the union of a man and a woman.  I also believe that the historic civil union law that I proudly signed in 2005 is equitable and just. We were the first state to enact such a law through legislative action and not a court mandate.   But Rell also indicated she wants no part of a culture war trying to overturn it, a signal to conservatives that she will play no part in an effort to undo the decision by law or constitutional amendment. The Supreme Court has spoken. I do not believe their voice reflects the majority of the people of Connecticut. However, I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision - either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution - will not meet with success. I will therefore abide by the ruling. Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams Jr., D-Brooklyn, celebrated the ruling: This historic ruling will provide additional security and protections to thousands of loving, committed same-sex couples and their children living in Connecticut. The plaintiffs, advocates, and above all -the people of Connecticut - should celebrate this civil rights victory. We look forw ...

The Connecticut Supreme Court just released its decision in the case of Kerrigan v. Commissioner of Public Health . By a 4-3 decision, the Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry: We conclude that, in light of the history of pernicious discrimination faced by Gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of Marriage carries with it a status and significance that the newly created classification of civil unions does not embody, the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm. Just got this via email from State Rep. Mike Lawlor, who is the long-serving House Chair of the Connecticut Legislature's Judiciary Committee. He applauded the decision and provided some key historical background, noting the Connecticut legislature will pass Marriage equality: The State of Connecticut has a bipartisan history of supporting equality for all citizens, Gay and straight. In 2005, our state legislature passed civil unions, which granted full state Marriage rights to same-sex couples, but only under a different name. That law passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and was signed into law by Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell. Connecticut became the first state in the nation to grant full Marriage rights to same-sex couples without a court order to do so. In 2007, the legislature’s Judiciary Committee successfully passed a Bill to change the name of “civil unio ...
