There is no doubt that RSS powers a lot of content moving through social networks, widgets, lifestreams and mobile devices. It has been the forgotten technology as the industry has turned their attention to widgets and social networks. RSS growth surprises many when the hear the numbers. It is used by over 50% of online users according to AvenueA/Razorfish. RSS has been growing under the radar for some time. According to a 2008 study from Universal McCann, RSS use is exploding, growing faster than all other key social Media platforms, including social networking and video sharing. According to the study, the number of RSS users jumped 153% between June 2007 and March 2008. Publishers today recognize that their content is increasingly consumed away from their website by their most loyal, dedicated readers. For many top publishers, their page views consumed outside their domain are greater than their website page views. The growth is not going unnoticed as a source of revenue for many of the top online publishers including Gawker Media. Inline with the growth in RSS usage, Gawker Media has seen their RSS revenue grow nearly 300 percent in the first quarter of 2008 using Pheedo. "Gawker Media has always made full content feeds available from the beginning, believing that the RSS channel was a valuable and under-levered distribution channel for marketing our content," stated Christopher P. Batty, Vice President of Sales of Gawker Media. "A ...

Yeah, we live in bizarre world of copyrighted conflicts… It seems like someone is always trying to exercise control over “their content” and using copyright as their bludgeon. Everything is “so” something. If it’s not so something, it’s so not worth talking about. Ask a rhetorical question, then immediately answer it. Why would any writer do something like that? Because it’s awesome , that’s why. Skirt the edge between sarcasm and sincerity, so you could be construed either way. It’s no good to clearly express your opinion. Oh, no. Better to safely retreat behind a constant sly smirk. That’ll keep them guessing, and set things up so that you can never be wrong. Yeah. Strikethrough is your friend. It’s a clever typographical device that opens up a whole new way to be a knee-jerk smartass express your thoughts. So is italic. I mean, duh . Sprinkle in useless metaphors and orthogonal pop-cultural references. That makes the writing more spicy— like a taco lovingly slathered with Tapatío brand hot sauce. ¡Muy Salsa! And above all… never forget to exaggerate. Because hyperbole is the essence of wit, and what makes this all-too-short life worth living. ...

What turned culture-jamming tech blog Boing Boing into the kind of censorious monster it normally ridicules? Beyond its initial statement that the reasons are "personal," Boing Boing hasn't elaborated, but all signs point to the foundering of a once-romantic friendship between Boing Boing editor Xeni Jardin and Violet Blue , the sex blogger whose many links from Boing Boing were erased last year. (Full disclosure: Jardin is Valleywag's favorite gay transgender alien visitor from the future , while Violet Blue has contributed to Fleshbot, a porn blog published by Valleywag owner Gawker Media. Blue once approached Valleywag contributor Melissa Gira Grant for sex, but was rebuffed.) In an email to Valleywag, pasted below, Blue continues to profess ignorance of what she did wrong; she also dismisses her entanglement with Jardin as a friendship laced with casual sex. Blue's own photo of the two at Kink.com party , shown here, suggests, in its entangled limbs, that the relationship was more serious than that. For Blue, we've come to believe, the friendship always had a mercenary angle — Jardin could get her linked as well as laid. The association with Boing Boing boosted Blue's career. How painful it must have been for Jardin to realize she was being used by a groupie who wanted to join her band. And people in pain exercise supremely bad judgment, which is what Jardin did when she "unpublished" posts about Blue from Boing Boing. She must hav ...

newVideoPlayer("/todomakeup_def.flv", 506, 423,"");Here at Defamer HQ, we try our darndest to keep our internal politics from interfering with what you see on the homepage. For instance, you never read about the time that a heated debate between Seth and I about whether George Clooney or Val Kilmer was the worse Batman ended in fisticuffs. You also never heard about the time that Molly McAleer and Molly Friedman got into a slapfight so intense over who got rights to the molly@defamer.com email address that NATO had to be called in (the Gawker Media legal department has forbidden that we disclose who won that fight). But sometimes we get emails from readers that, try as we might, we just can't keep behind the scenes. One of those notes is the basis for this evening's installment of Defamer To Do's, starring the one and only Molls. Yesterday it was announced that Rush Limbaugh signed a $400 million - 8 year contract. We were waiting to get a reaction from other people in radio but they were stunned into silence. Remember kids - don't do drugs - it could ruin your life and the lives of everyone around you. Speaking of tragedy, with all the lay off news for print papers, here's another kick while you're down: according to Radar, Gawker bloggers' bonuses are being slashed by $2500 for over 1 million hits. They are now getting less money too, but it's because they are too successful. New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in Media ...

Over at Gawker Nick Denton is reporting that page views for the site are 108% ahead of the level they were at at the end of last year. Many will remember that Gawker suffered a much talked about mass exodus late last fall with the successive departures of Alex Balk , Choire Sicha , Emily Gould , Josh Stein , and Doree Shafrir , causing many in the Media world to wonder if Gawker's day in the sun had finally come to a close. At the time Denton did not seem all that fazed and these numbers seem to reinforce the fact that "the transformation of Gawker from cute blog to fully-fledged news site" has been a success. Or maybe it's just a result of an increased number of posts per day. Or maybe they've just continued to showcase strong writers, though we have noticed a significant reduction in snark factor, so perhaps niceness(ish) is gaining popularity. Nearly ten years before Violet Blue vs. Boing Boing , the Internet's early bloggers discovered their new medium's killer application: Personal spats. Radar Online blogger Choire Sicha, angling for his 14th return to us here at Gawker Media, recounts blogfeuding's past. Choire: tl; dr . Only one era bears recounting: the months after 9/11. 2001 and 2002: With the emergence of "the warbloggers" post-9/11, as they were called, everyone feuded with everyone. Seriously. Everyone ! (N.B. that account includes some serious misreading.) It was sheer chaos , a mass freakout that distended psychoanalytic space and time. There were even Denial of Service attacks . Dave Winer, the feudiest of all internetters, took on the world , briefly. You won't click all those links, so just read the one where Instapundit agrees with Denton . (Photo via Wonkette ) ...
