A WALL of silence at London City Airport has led aviation experts to conclude a bid is being launched for Gatwick. Bosses at the Docklands airfield have previously been happy to talk of their interest in the Sussex airport. However, after the Competition Commission recommended BAA sell two of its London airports, City has gone quiet. Some commentators believe the change in strategy points to a bid being mounted. Jane’s aviation expert Chris Yates said: “When putting a bid together, it’s best to keep your trap shut until you’ve got your plan in place. You don’t keep talking about it and tipping off your competitors.” Previously, City executives have not been shy on talking up their interest in the Sussex airport. Last July, City’s chief executive Richard Gooding said: “There is nothing in front of us today, but we are business people and if there is some business around that’s of interest to our shareholders and us, we’ll want to have a crack at it. "Gatwick and Southampton are the two we’d be most interested in.” In November last year the airport’s business strategy director Charles Buchanan said the City was not after Gatwick – because it was not on the market. Now with it possibly about to be sold, executives at City Airport are refusing to confirm or deny a bid. This week, London City, which is owned by Global Infrastructure Partners – a joint venture between Credit Suisse and General Electric’s GE Infrastructure – and AIG Fina ...

We are on the way to Gatwick - shutting down for the holidays (traffic jams and take off times permitting). The decision of the Turkish constitutional court this week not to suspend the Turkish governing party, and its leading figures, is a big cause for relief.  The banning  of the AKP would have been completely contrary to the European ideals that the Turkish government want to embrace, and it would have been a huge distraction.  Now there is a massive opportunity for Turkey and for Europe.  Turkey needs to take forward its own reform programme internally and make progress externally - on relations with the Kurds in northern Iraq and in supporting a bi-zonal, bi-communal settlement of the Cyprus dispute.  Europe needs to embrace the opportunity to work through the accession issues for European membership.  At least this is not now going to get me back from holiday. Blog resumes in three weeks or so.  Hopefully browner and fresher. ...

4 Points out of 5 Gatwick is one of the best airports the UK has; it far surpasses Stansted and Heathrow. It has a great selection of shops to choose from for duty-free shopping and for roaming around trying to waste time if you’ve been hit with a delay. The general organisation here is great too; check-in is made a lot easier here than some of the smaller airports due to the fact that queues don’t seem to build up and there are more check-in desks. Staff have always been more than helpful here and the airport is laid out in an intelligent way which leads you from A to B, unlike Stansted, which is possibly the worst-designed airport in the UK. All in all, it does the job and it does it well. I prefer to fly to and from Gatwick rather than anywhere else. Tags: airport london Gatwick duty free ...
