As a percentage, what is Icelands population compared to ours? Ditto land mass? Driving population? Average miles driven per day? Primary source of moving supplies from ports to distribution centers? Distribution centers to wholesalers? Wholesalers to retailers? How did Iceland become 100% energy efficient? What did they replace? How long did it take? Did they go cold-turkey with one before replacing it with another? The problem with this debate, James, is that too many people don't understand how things function within an economy, but they understand sound-bites. It's too easy to agree with the prevailing arguements than it is to think them through. In a nutshell, we have politicians from has-been Vice Presidents to the current speaker of the House getting in the way of supplies (oil) needed by our people - supplies that in abundancy can reduce the price of medicines, medical supplies, recycling, and transportation (to name a few) out of greed and a false-sense of political expediency. Look at the specious arguements against drilling our own, for example, Obama (I'm paraphrasing)- "If we release oil from the Strategic Oil Reserve, we'll reduce prices at the pump." Pelosi said the same thing - only thing is that if you emptied those reserves, you'd reduce the price of Gas by a few pennies for a couple of weeks, only to find we have no oil for our Fleets and ground forces, and nothing left to give them, and no way to go get more. Retail Gas prices swung higher Friday - the first increase in 43 days - as analysts warned that a direct hit on U.S. energy infrastructure by Hurricane Gustav could send pump prices hurtling toward $5 a gallon. Meanwhile, oil prices ended the day slightly lower, falling for a second straight session. But prices fluctuated sharply as some traders feared supply disruptions and others bet the government will release supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if Gustav wreaks havoc in the Gulf of Mexico area - home to a quarter of U.S. crude supplies and 40 percent of refining capacity. Gustav, which regained hurricane strength Friday, was spinning away from Jamaica on a course toward Gulf Coast states including Louisiana - three years to the day since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the state and tore up oil rigs and refineries. ...
