Earlier this week, we discussed how year-to-year engineering and tuning changes have eked out better fuel economy estimates for several GM, Hyundai and Ford cars. Now, Chrysler enters the fray with an extensively updated Hemi and improved mpg updates for the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger twins as well as the Dodge Caliber. Most of the 2009s are already on sale along with their heavily discounted 2008 counterparts. The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is a Chrysler staple that’s available in its large SUVs, large sedans and trucks, as well as the coveted Dodge Challenger. The all-new Hemi delivers, on average, 5% better fuel economy than its predecessor, along with nearly 30 more horsepower and more torque, thanks in part to the new powertrain’s variable valve timing. Also, Chrysler’s multi-displacement system – which allows the V-8 to run on four cylinders at highway speeds – is updated, allowing it to stay in four-cylinder mode longer. The end result may be just one or two added miles per gallon, but when paired to the added power, these numbers are impressive. Fueleconomy.gov continues to release 2009 EPA estimates as we inch toward the new year. On average, we’ve seen slight gains from many existing models and larger ones for new models. Automakers are making modest changes to carryover models because buyers are demanding more fuel-efficient vehicles, and all-new models aren’t in the immediate pipeline for every car out there. We’ve already mentioned fuel economy increases for GM, Chrysler and Hyundai products; now it’s Ford’s turn.The all-new 2009 F-150 — the release of which has been delayed — gets a slight but vital mpg upgrade. Both the 5.4-liter and 4.6-liter V-8 receive three valves per cylinder rather than two; some models are also equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. These features improve horsepower and help this all-V-8 lineup deliver a fleet-average 1 mpg improvement compared to the 2008 F-Series. This is better than the Nissan Titan, Toyota Tundra and new 2009 Dodge Ram; however, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra have similar numbers. The Ford Edge crossover remains relatively unchanged in most respects, but improves by 1 mpg in the city. It’s now equal to its larger crossover stablemate, the Flex. The large Expedition SUV also gets a fairly significant bump of 2 mpg in city and highway driving. Q. Recently, I heard that turning off the car's air conditioner and opening the window will increase Gas Mileage and thus save money. While I'm all for saving money, this idea sounds bogus. I say opening the windows would increase the drag, and therefore reduce your Gas Mileage. Am I right? RAY : You are right, Sam. Using the air conditioner does lower your Gas Mileage, but not as much as opening the windows does. TOM : Now, just to be clear, we're talking about driving at moderate to high speeds here. At those speeds, where aerodynamics play a crucial role in your Mileage, you're always better off with the windows closed on a modern car. RAY : When they design cars now, and do wind-tunnel testing or modeling, it's always with the assumption that the windows will be closed, so the sides of the car will be smooth. Otherwise, the airflow around the car is interrupted, and Mileage will suffer. That's why they never let you roll down the windows on those 757s. TOM : Right. That, and the frigid temperatures and the lack of oxygen. Anyway, at lower speeds, it's more of a toss-up. Imagine if you're stopped in traffic, or moving at less than 20 miles per hour.
