These mattress exercises were devised by Michele Bond (CPT, NASM), while Marc Natividad , (NCCPT, NCEP, Power Plate, and TRX), is all over the rest of the furniture! Both are trainers at the Santa Monica Spectrum Club . Remember, these are designed to tone you and get your heart pumping fully clothed . However, if you are in a hotel room and if you prefer to sweat naked -- for the maid's sake, I'd suggest hanging the "Privacy Please" sign on the door... MICHELE'S MATTRESS MOVES: #1 - THE MILE HIGH FLY Lie prone on bed (on stomach) with just your shoulders off the bed (the rest of your body is on the bed, supported) Arms are hanging down in front of bed. Brace abdominals and glutes as you raise arms out to the side, hold a second and return to starting position. Try 2 sets of 15-20 reps. Mattress Maniacs: Try to see how much of your body you can have off the bed and still maintain good form... Lower back not hurting. This is good for shoulders, back, core, and glutes. #2 - BRING ME TO THE EDGE Lie on the bed on your back. (Clothes on, please) Scoot your bottom so it's just at the edge of the bed. Bring your knees over your hips, legs at 90 degrees, pointed toes, with your arms at your side. Slowly lower one leg down, aiming your toe towards the ground. Only go as far as you need to in order to feel the abs working. Don't let that lower back arch. Try 2 sets of 12-20 reps. Mattress Maniacs: Try touching the floor with your toes or do ... I may not appear to be a gym rat (writers frequently spend hours in the stationary keister position), I don't feel good if I don't exercise. Most hotels offer some semblance of a gym, but they often charge a fee or have limited hours and/or equipment. I asked three trainers from my gym, Spectrum Club of Santa Monica, for some exercises any traveler (at any fitness level) could do in a hotel room without packing a bosu or fitness ball or any other equipment. My next two posts will contain the program they devised: Part 1 -- stretching; Part 2 will get you sweaty using the mattress, chair and floor (clothes on -- this is not a whorehouse aerobic program for which you hopefully require no instruction). Hotel Warriors' Stretching Program: Part 1 Designed by Serkan O. Yimsel, NCEP Exercise Therapist/CHEK Exercise Coach/NASM, NSCA, UCLA Fitness (syimsel@hotmail.com ) Before beginning any workout, it's good to assess your current level of flexibility -- which can vary day by day. Before stretching, you need to do four basic mobility tests to assess your readiness for hotel exercise combat. It's never a good idea to randomly pick muscles and stretch them. First, you need to identify which muscles need stretching and which require strengthening. Lower Body Mobility Tests : 1. Bend over please (Hip Extensor Test): Stand with your feet hip width apart and knees straight but not locked. Bend forward as if to touch your toes. Your head and ne ... I strongly believe that the only way we will be able to hold/reduce health care costs is through a truly public plan. We've had so many promised from the insurance industry about how they would reduce costs. Nada. A government that takes care of all its people is as important in health care as it is for defense. While David Hare contemplates the credit crunch for an autumn play at the National, Soho theatre unveils a programme of bite-size plays about the financial crisis It's often said that theatre can seem pretty slow at responding to the world around us, which makes what we see on stage an understanding of the past rather than a sense of now. Even the Tricycle's tribunal plays have a considerable time lag, and people have grown used to holding their breath for David Hare to give his latest theatrical pronouncement on the state we're in. Still, there have been suggestions this year that theatre is learning to be quicker off the mark. Caryl Churchill's response to Gaza was one such instance, and You Really Couldn't Make It Up , about Newcastle United's disastrous season and relegation from the Premier League, is another. During Edinburgh, RBS – the Musical will be taking the credit squeeze right to the bank's front steps. And just after the National's announcement that David Hare is writing a play tackling the economic crisis , to be staged in October, Soho theatre nips in with its own response to the credit crunch. Everything Must Go is a two-week season of events, debates and short plays from Kay Adshead, Will Eno , Bola Agbaje and Oladipo Agboluaje among others, offering bite-size responses to the recession. Unlike the National, which will clearly have the might of all its resources behind Hare's play, Soho's season is a product of i ... Source: thenewsstar.com --- 11 days ago

by Ed Price Filed under: Yankees , MLB Injuries NEW YORK - Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner was taken off the field on a cart Thursday after slamming into the fence on a fine running catch. Fortunately, the Yankees said after the game that Gardner only had the wind knocked out of him. He was traveling with the club to Florida and no medical tests were scheduled. A rookie speedster batting .277, Gardner chased down a long eighth-inning drive by Washington's Austin Kearns . After Gardner made the catch, his back seemed to hit where the wall is divided between fence and plexiglass that allows the bullpen to see field. He crumpled to the ground and was immediately tended to. Yankees CF Gardner OK After Running Into Wall originally appeared on MLB FanHouse on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 20:54:00 EST . La Clique's last hurrah at the Hippodrome is a must, and there are festivals aplenty. Plus, Helen Mirren's Phèdre comes to cinema screens There are some good festivals coming up this month. In Cambridge, the new writing-focused Hotbed kicks off with Anna Reynolds's Stand By Your Van. This is followed by new work from Fraser Grace, Steve Waters and Clare Bayley. The Greenwich and Docklands festival in London has a terrific programme of work, including Fous de Bassin , a watery spectacular from French company Ilotopie. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Graeae and Strange Fruit's collaboration, Against the Tide , Metro Boulot Dodo's MP3-player version of Hansel and Gretel and Little Box of Horrors by Bootworks. The Greenwich and Docklands festival proves there is an increasing amount of high-quality UK work around. With the Paradise Gardens festival in east London this weekend, the National's Watch This Space season shortly coming to the South Bank, and the Hat Fair programme just published, it seems the outdoor theatre season is upon us. The big news this week is the live broadcast of Phèdre from the National on Thursday evening to cinema screens around the world. It will be interesting to see how audiences respond. Is live on stage and live on screen the same thing? I tend to think not, but maybe this leap in technology will deliver a different worthwhile experience.
