By ALEX BRANCH FORT WORTH — There was a time when parents in the Lake Como neighborhood were afraid to let their children play outside. In the 1980s, gangs exploded across Fort Worth. Gang signs and drive-bys were common. Today, Gang Violence is so rare that city officials are considering relocating the Gang intervention program in Como to a neighborhood south of Interstate 20. "Children play in their yards all the time now," said Dorothy Dubose, a Como resident since 1956. "You don’t have to worry that if they’re wearing a different color someone could get shot. It’s not happening here." The city’s boundaries and demographics have changed, and street gangs have evolved, too. They’ve drawn up their stakes in some neighborhoods and replanted them in others. The city is re-evaluating where to place its resources. Among the changes suggested in a city Gang assessment released in July was moving the Comin’ Up Gang intervention program in Como to Altamesa Boulevard and McCart Avenue. It also suggested opening a program facility in the Riverside area instead of Woodhaven, where it was originally planned. Gang-related crime in the Altamesa and Riverside areas has surpassed Como and Woodhaven, according to the assessment. Police say there are a couple of reasons Gang activity has shifted. Some Gang members have gotten older and matured out of the lifestyle. Families have moved as affordable housing became available in other neighborhoods ...
