Starting to get some responses to work at Press Tour. Not often I get a letter from a general manager of a professional sports team, but I got one this week from Jason B.W. Lake, general manager of the Los Angeles complexity of the Champion Gaming Series: Very sorry you weren't able to attend our Championship Gaming Series party. I hope you got all the laundry done. Your article was well written and very humorous, but I think you missed the mark on professional gamers. I am founder and GM of the L.A. team and I can assure you today's gamers are nothing like the stereotype you put forward. Perhaps if you took the time (I know it's hard for us old folks) to investigate the state of Gaming on a global basis, you'd realize they more closely resemble the rock stars of the 50's (read: about to explode into the mainstream stardom) and not the Atari geeks from the early 80's. Most professional gamers are ex-athletes, well spoken, and outgoing. Remember: in the 1800's coal miners and railroad workers all swore there was no way a man could make a living hitting a little baseball. Again, I enjoyed your article, but humbly suggest you do more homework about today's gamers before reverting to old, stale stereotypes. Thanks for your note. E3 might seem an odd occasion for an episode of Retronauts, but what the hey -- this was an odd E3, so it evens out. Our new episode isn't a retrospective about E3, though; it's a look at all the old games (or new games pretending to be old) at this year's show. In fact, I'd say somewhere between one-third and one-half of the hottest games on display (using the very scientific metric of "what does everyone seem enthusiastic about?") were either from many years ago or else tapped into a primal core of nostalgia for bygone days. We discussed: Kirby Super Star Ultra - Super NES, 1997 Retro Game Challenge - Faux Famicom/NES c.1984-1990 Wario Land Shake It! - direct sequel to a 2001 handheld game, on a console Mega Man 9 - channeling 1989's NES hit Mega Man 2 Chrono Trigger DS - Super NES, 1995 Dragon Quest IV - NES, 1990 Bionic Commando Rearmed - remake of a 1988 NES game Galaga Legions - "true" sequel to a 1981 arcade game Yumi's Odd Odyssey - PSP remake of a 1997 PS1 remake of a 1994 Super Famicom game Also, I totally forgot to mention Populous DS , but it's looking pretty hot, too.
