In the toy Industry, growth doesn’t necessarily come in a straight line since sales often depend on big “must have” hits with consumers. At the same time, toys offer relatively lower average price points when compared to other entertainment options. But this brings up the key economic question: Will a slowdown in the United States affect demand? UBS analysts Robert Carroll and Robin Farley think the mature and highly-fragmented toy market is well positioned to offset any near-term economic weakness, making it an attractive alternative in the broader consumer space. Together, Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc. have less than 40% of the market, which the analysts expect will grow at a compound rate of roughly 2% annually. Any growth rate above inflation will also depend on factors like birth rates, they said in a report initiating coverage on the traditional toy Industry (excluding video Games), which had US$22.2-billion in retail sales in 2007. “When combined with increases in consumer spending levels per child, further integration of technology into toys resulting in rising average sale prices, and a continued shift in the retail environment toward large discount retailers we believe the Industry should be able to counteract the negative forces of age compression (children getting older younger),” they said. The gaming Industry just keeps. On. Growing. And shows no sign of slacking off! And while many pundits will point to the runaway success of the Wii as a key catalyst for this growth, some sales analysis by UBS' Ben Schachter shows that the driving force behind the Industry's success is in fact music Games. Particularly, Guitar Hero & Rock Band. According to Schachter's research, music Games accounted for 19% of all gaming sales last month, and accounted for a crazy 44% of gaming's dollar growth over July 2007. Yeah, it's only one month, and yeah, they'll account for growth because they're expensive, but still. Don't rain on their parade! That's big money whichever way you look at it. Filed under: Business Rhythm Games have certainly been keeping the tempo up for financial growth in the Industry. GameDaily notes UBS analyst Ben Schachter's report, showing "music-themed Games" have made up 15% of software sales year-to-date and 32% year-over-year growth so far. The Guitar Hero franchise is already up 82% this year, with Guitar Hero: On Tour taking in $15 million in July alone . Meanwhile, Rock Band , across all platforms, took in $47 million in July ... and that doesn't even count any DLC sales. Unless the rhythm game bubble bursts in the next few months, GH: World Tour and Rock Band 2 sales -- along with their respective DLC sales -- could make up a significant portion of another record-breaking year for the Industry.
