What should consumers expect from a re-make or a port? A better ending if the first Game didn’t have a great one? “ BioShock ” was released on the Xbox 360 last summer year to much critical acclaim. A PS3 version with commendably similar engineering is coming out next month. But there was at least one widely acknowledged flaw with the Xbox 360 version: the Game’s final act. Yesterday, I learned that despite that year that’s passed since the 360 version’s release, that ending isn’t going to be improved on the PS3. “When you get a chance to work on something that was really creative you get the temptation to re-do things,” the PS3 version’s senior producer, Melissa Miller of 2K Marin , told MTV Multiplayer. “We chose not to.” Criticism of the Game’s final hours of gameplay is subjective, of course. Detailing it too much would be a spoiler. In vague terms, non-”BioShock” players, the complaints about the ending focused on a boss battle and on the limited paths that this Game — that was otherwise about the nature of free will — wound up offering its players. Criticizing the ending is hardly controversial. “BioShock” lead creator Ken Levine admitted those flaws himself last year in an interview with Kotaku’s Brian Crecente , saying “I underestimated, way underestimated, the impact the story was going to have on people … I didn’t realize it would change people’s perspective on what to expect from gameplay.” The PS3 version will present ...

Filed under: GDC , Business What, you thought GDC only happened in San Francisco? Well, so did we. But we've invaded the land of BBQ, music, and Shiner Bock to bring you the latest from the development-heavy Austin Game Developers Conference . This year the focus is on writing and Game audio, so we'll bring you the best of the fest as we sit in on panels and talk to people in the Game industry. Austin is fast establishing itself as a mini-mecca of gaming companies ; already places like Activision Blizzard, NCSoft, Vigil, and Sony Online have offices here, with more opening all the time. Texas Governor Rick Perry announced this summer at E3 that Austin would be heavily pursuing Game companies and offering them tax incentives to set up shop here, so if you're wanting to work in the industry, you might consider a move. We live in a world where we are surrounded almost nonstop from the time we wake up until the time we go to sleep by advertising. From the magazines we read to the searches we do on the Web, advertising permeates it all. With the software we use on a daily basis, it has been a common practice for some Developers to offer up ad-supported versions of their software so users could use the programs without having to pay for them. The idea being that if you wanted to get rid of the ads, you could buy a registered version that didn’t display any advertising. For the longest time web forums have carried advertising, but you could often buy a subscription that would serve you up an adless version. My own set of community forums over on my personal site operates this way. Along with that, we have since the advent of AdSense become use to seeing text ads being displayed on our search result pages. The majority of Web 2.0 businesses are all based around an ad supported revenue model so we have gotten use to our web apps or services displaying ads of some sort. A great many of these web services also offer up what is commonly called the “freemium” option to their services, which means that the basic part of their service will display the ads, but you can buy a subscription that will remove the ads and some cases provide additional options. In all this constant bombardment of advertising though, there has always been one place we could retreat ...

After years of lamenting that they see no kickback from the extremely lucrative used Game market, Game makers have launched a counter-attack by packing new games with one-use codes for extra content. New copies of Epic's Gears of War 2 (360) will include a one-use download code that will rewards with 5 additional multiplayer maps, all pulled from the original Gears of War. According to GamePro , these maps will not be available for purchase through the Xbox Live Marketplace, with Epic claiming they are "special gifts [for] our loyal fans." EA Canada's NBA Live 09 utilizes a similar ... ...

I have no idea why I act so surprised when I hear stuff like this. Honestly, how many people are “shocked” to hear that record labels are trying to shake down Game Developers for higher fees to use music in their games? As such, it's hard to blame Warner Music Group chairman/CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. for wanting a bigger slice of that pie. During a conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss the label's fiscal third-quarter operating results last month, Bronfman lambasted the "paltry" per-song licensing fees labels get when making their content available in music games and warned that Warner would stop licensing to them if the model did not change. Jayant and Rajant Agarwalla are telling fans they've had a partial victory in their effort to defend Scrabulous, their highly popular digital version of Scrabble. The LA Times reports that the two sent an e-mail to fans claiming the Indian court where they being sued by Mattel ruled that the name Scrabulous was a trademark violation. But, they say, the Game itself doesn't violate Mattel's rights. We haven't seen the court papers on this or heard Mattel's response so hard to know what the ruling really means. The Agarwallas say they "will take a call on whether we will appeal against the decision on the trademark after consulting our legal advisors." Mattel, which holds the international rights, filed suit in India in February. Hasbro, the North American rights holder, sued in July , prompting Facebook to ask the Agarwallas to withhold the Game from North American users. Last month, responding to a complaint by Mattel, Facebook barred the app from most users; India, where the Mattel lawsuit was pending, was the exception. Meanwhile, the Agarawallas launched Wordscraper, another Scrabble-a-like but with circles rather than squares and some other surface changes. Wordscraper lists 232,440 monthly active Facebook users.
