I feel your pain. My team in the Facebook Experts League is 0-5. I imagine that a lot of you out there are doing a bit better, but some of you, well things haven't gone our way, have they? My much-criticized pick of Felix Jones is paying off, but pretty much everything else isn't. Peyton Manning has been just better than Tom Brady, but Brady's out. I can't find a second running back that will put up consistent numbers, forcing me to hope that Ryan Torain will end the Mike Shanahan RB madness in a couple weeks. My receivers are a jumbled mess, but you know what's not getting me? Injuries. At least in my area of expertise, I'm doing OK, and there are still eight weeks left for a comeback. Maybe. Let's get to the injuries: ...

On Sept. 30 the Irish government announced it will guarantee all debt and deposits, roughly $578 billion, at six of the country's banks through Sept. 28, 2010. The plan, at least in the short-term, had the intended impact, it bought the country's financial system some time and sent the share prices of the country's biggest lenders skyrocketing. "We can't bail out a particular bank; that wouldn't be right," Ireland's Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said in an interview on Irish radio. "What we have decided to do is give a general guarantee that the banks can lend in security and safety." Now British banks are pressuring Prime Minister Gordon Brown to do the same. They argue that the Irish guarantee puts them at an unfair disadvantage. Indeed, Irish banks say they are already being inundated with calls from potential British customers. ...

Microsoft will pay and perk you to death to get you to use its search and the move may not be so silly. Why? Roughly 22 percent of the search market is up for grabs so you might as well buy some loyalty. That 22 percent figure comes from a survey by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. I wouldn't call his sample exactly scientific, but it's an interesting footnote to the hubbub over Microsoft's latest plan to buy your search behavior (Techmeme). Microsoft rolled out another search rewards program to grab more users (by the way the perks program only works with Internet Explorer). Google's browser, Chrome, is likely to point the way for computing using Web-based applications. Like a fly flitting around the kitchen, Google Inc. has pestered Microsoft Corp. with a series of free applications that nibble away at the software powerhouse's business. The lineup includes an e-mail program ( Gmail ), a photo application ( Picasa ), a word processor ( Google Docs ), even mobile phone software ( Android ). But its latest launch -- a Web browser called Chrome -- is a direct attack not just on Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer but on the heart of Microsoft's business, the Windows operating system. And even if it doesn't succeed, it points to where computing is headed, with or without Microsoft's blessing. ...

I have just finished reading Google's "comic book" explanation of the thinking and technology that went into the company's new Web browser, called Chrome. If you're interested in the high-level details, it's well worth a look. Nutshell: Google's promising that Internet users will find Chrome zippier, easier to use, more helpful and significantly less vulnerable than today's browsers, primarily because it was built from scratch at a time when security risks and the limitations of competitors are well understood. Michael Klare has a long essay on Putin's energy Gambit in the Caucasus: "The ultimate prize in this contest is control over the flow of oil and natural gas from the energy-rich Caspian basin to eager markets in Europe and Asia." No kidding. But even if it's not earth-shattering, Klare's essay offers a good overview and is well worth reading. One big question is what European countries will do on the energy-security front, as they try to move away from relying on Russia for its natural-gas supplies—which have become increasingly important as the continent slowly weans itself off coal and oil to meet its Kyoto emissions targets. (Natural gas isn't carbon-free, but it's cleaner than those other fuels, and not a terrible stopgap.) A massive shift away from all fossil fuels would be ideal, though admittedly easier said than done. And the prospects for Plan A, the Nabucco gas pipeline running from the Caspian through Georgia and Turkey to Central Europe, have dimmed —Russia's invasion appears to have scared off investors. Meanwhile, The Globe and Mail reported recently that Italy, Germany, and Spain may start leaning more heavily on Algeria and Libya for natural-gas supplies, but that may not take them very far (plus, Russia has offered to buy up all of Libya's exports). Natural-gas production in the United States will certainly increase, true, though it's still unclear how far the country can actually ramp up domestic production; the ...

Gambit Communications has announced the release of the latest version of the Virtual Lab Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). The company will offer version 3.42 of the product, which uses Cisco switches to create a real-world lab environment. It is described by the firm as an enhanced PC-based training toll, which uses Cisco switches to support the CCNA certification. Uwe Zimmermann, president and chief technology officer for Gambit Communications, said: "MIMIC Virtual Lab appeals to a broad range of customers, from individual engineers to large enterprises to training organisations." He added they would provide users with "new features" which will enable them to prepare for the latest exam in the area. The lab-rep comprises of Cisco routers and Cisco switches with LAN, WAN and ISDN connections. In addition, it has IOS commands and exercises which relate to the relevant exam.
