Tony GWYNN has seen the ugly side of Wrigley Field, like the day Eric Show beaned Andre Dawson and all you-know-what broke loose. He also saw the classy side of the venerable ballpark, like the day he went 5-for-5 there and the same fans who hurled so many insults his way gave him a standing ovation. ...

Are you ready for some football? Really, it's a dumb question that never needs to be asked in football-crazed America. Here, the high school season kicks off this weekend and no team is more ready than the top-ranked Dunbar Poets. The two-time defending Class 1A state champs -- winners of five state crowns overall and led by two-time All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year Tavon Austin -- will get a stern season-opening test tomorrow when they travel to Prince George's County to take on fellow perennial state power GWYNN Park. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Brandywine. Dunbar coach Lawrence Smith is excited about the challenge presented by the Yellow Jackets, who won a state title in 2006 and are ranked 15th in the state by MDVarsity.com . It's a chance for Smith to see what his team is made of right out of the gate and prep for league foes like Edmondson, City and Poly. "We're really excited. GWYNN Park is always one of the better teams in the state, so we'll have to play an error-free game and hope to come out with a victory," Smith said. That was the case last season when the Poets earned a 27-6 win against GWYNN Park, getting the Poets primed for a 14-0 season that culminated in a 58-34 win over Allegany in the title game. With the anticipation and excitement of the season opener continuing to build, Smith is trying to keep his Poets grounded, downplaying the hype and keeping them focused on the task at hand. His pre-game messa ...

As her chart-topping tunes "Our Song" and "Teardrops On My Guitar" have garnered her the role of country music's reigning princess, an American castle was an apt choice for teen sensation Taylor Swift's latest music video, "Love Story." The private residence of Mr. Mike Freeman, who began work on his dream dwelling in 1980, Castle GWYNN in Arrington-Triune, Tennessee magically transforms for a few days each spring into the regal realm of Covington Glen for the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. The Juliet-inspired garment worn by the Grammy-nominated artist in the video is a familiar sight during festival days as the troupe of knights in shining armor, minstrels, jugglers and wenches arrive to wow the crowd with 16th century entertainment. For those who wish to walk in the footsteps of the country music star, the price of admission to the festival also allows visitors a tour of Castle GWYNN's first floor and grounds. XX Sports Radio: Tony GWYNN Intereview (MP3) Tony GWYNN gives the Dodgers credit.  The Dodgers hitters are making the pitchers work.  The Dodgers have earned it. Other than Mark DeRosa, the Cubs haven't been able to put it together.  He thought "Zambrano threw the crap out of the ball" but his defense couldn't back him up. Fukudome isn't aggressive on balls that are out.  The Cubs are only aggressive on middle-in.  Fukudome has been off balance.  GWYNN thinks DeRosa will be in right field tomorrow. GWYNN watched batting practice.  Manny has an unbelievable swing.  He had to get the home run swing from game one on video tape so he could study it. GWYNN thinks 98% of the time Manny's swing is under control and he's confident that whatever you throw him, he can hit it.  His discipline is so good, GWYNN would pitch around Manny. The Dodgers are quietly confident. GWYNN really likes Russell Martin because he can do so many things at the plate.  GWYNN thinks the Cubs need to relax and that the road is the best thing for them.  The crowd put too much pressure on them. GWYNN agrees that the Cubs haven't done enough to allow Pinella to manage them to a win. GWYNN thinks the Angels can get back into the series.  He thinks they are the best and most balanced game in baseball.  If the Angels lose tonight he doesn't think they are coming back against the Red Sox. What would excite GWYNN about the 2009 season? Right now, re-signing Giles and H ...

"It was not at all like 1984." Oh, yes, 1984. You might remember GWYNN and the Padres went to Wrigley that October, got whacked in two games, but then came home and swept the Cubs back into misery. Do Cubs fans remember? "Do they remember me?" GWYNN said. "Oh, gosh, they were so (ticked) off (Wednesday) night as I walked out. They remember me, no question. Cubs fans haven't forgotten GWYNN ...

OK, to make it a bit more theoretical, we've had two posters challenge states on smoking bans, or hint that these aresomehow bad ideas. However if the states have rights, and this is what the people ofthe state want, then what's the problem? Why are many people in favor of states' rights also in favor of federal things like a Constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman? In the former case we're saying the state can't make the decision for ideological grounds, in thelatter we're saying the federal government should overrule the states on ideological grounds. Both undercut states' rights. So I guess I'd just like to see some consistency. ...

Boy oh boy. I was going to lay out my whole argument here, but GWYNN really did it for me in the last post. I certainly have some concerns about it; I mean, I don't approve of its attitude towards women in the slightest, and I get where family pressures and isolation could cause someone to make a choice they would not normally make... though there's some truth to GWYNN's point that it might have happened anyway. In full honesty, part of the reason I've taken the stance I have is simply because BD's argument has been so inconsistent and so incongruously passionate about diversity itself that it strongly suggests a point where rationality has been left behind. BD purportedly doesn't care about the women whose inheritances might be lost--that's just a cultural change--but gets really really mad when one culture makes room for another culture's values? So angry that he'll try to find at least three different avenues of attack to show why they're bad, only to disavow at least two of them? This is all indicative of a personal argument, not a truly analytical argument. Such arguments are a dime a dozen on the BBS, really, and usually I don't play devil's advocate like that, because it's obvious to everyone except the poster; here, I'm so startled to have it come from BD that I wanted to explore it. ...

GWYNN: Yeah, I think you've got it. I think we get the "theft" reaction from "unjustly excluding something from the use of others." Not only does this not require property rights, but it does have that moral level; some exclusions betray our sense of fairness, others don't. A note, however: It's not that objectivists don't think that the right to property is primarily the right to exclude, but rather that they don't believe there's a social dimension. The right to property is absolute, given, "objective," a function of our labor so fundamental that it's like ourselves. This is, of course, nonsense. Couple of examples: Say you're the only person in the world... or if you prefer, the only person on an undiscovered continent. What does it mean to "own" something? How can you differentiate your property from your non-property? Answer: you can't. To own something necessarily requires someone else around to recognize it, someone to exclude. So add one more person to the continent. Now what do you own? Everything you touch? Everything you see? Everything you whittle with your labor? Again, though there may be issues of fairness, the basic decision of who owns what is decided between them--is social. Even in today's system, the idea that property exists without society is kind of silly. Imagine an old man who lives alone. He's dying, so he has a notary come out and dictates a valid will, which leaves everything to the grandnephew he's never se ...

I'm looking for a good discussion/explanation of the Buddhist tetralemma. Specifically one that assumes it has some point, unlike the following: http://www.thelogician.net/3b_buddhist_illogic/3b_chapter_01.htm I assume this is the typical Western view of it, which essentially, after a lot of writing, boils down to something like, Western logic is right and Nagarjuna was an idiot or a liar. ...
