Republican candidate John McCain and other Republican leaders have charged that community organizing group ACORN has been involved in fraudulent voter registration. Two former Republican Senators today asked Senator Barack Obama to personally deal with the allegations, claiming that he has specific ties to the ACORN. Some experts disagree, saying the problems can and will be handled by each state's employees and that the allegations are a way to detract from Obama's recent surge in the polls. Boy, that United States Senate is a funny little forum. As this year’s session draws to a close, so do the storied careers of several esteemed senators such as Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel, New Mexico Republican Pete Domenici and Virginia Republican John Warner. The tributes came today on the Senate floor from the likes of Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who told Warner that he admired his silvery mane. Warner, a World War II veteran and ex-Navy secretary, entered the Senate three decades ago. He was initially derided as a lightweight by some political Critics because he was known mainly for being Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor’s husband. But Warner rose to become a legend himself as Armed Services Committee chairman and for opposing the Senate election bid by GOP hero Ollie North. Domenici - whose alleged attempts to get New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias fired by former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales are now under criminal investigation by a Justice Department special prosecutor named yesterday - won praise from liberal Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois. “He is a good man,” said a beaming Durbin of Domenici. Moments later, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) brought up the U.S. attorneys scandal. He avoided mentioning his Senate colleague set to retire, instead complaining that current Attorney General Michael Mukasey should consider his personal career options, since White House officials have refused to ... The vice presidential debate may be over , but the reviews are still coming in. Here is a paif of statements issued late last night by the two state parties. (Any guesses on who each side thinks won?) State GOP chairman Reince Priebus : " Tonight, Governor Sarah Palin silenced Critics and proved she is ready to lead as Vice President of the United States. A Washington outsider and proven maverick, Palin went toe-to-toe with Senator Joe Biden, pointing out flaws in his ticket's positions on raising taxes for hardworking Americans, opposing the surge in Iraq and proposing to meet with radical foreign leaders. Speaking directly to the American people about what she and Senator McCain will do to move our country forward, Governor Palin was a breath of fresh air while Senator Biden was stuck in the past and lied about his record, John McCain's record and Barack Obama's proposals." State Democratic chairman Joe Wineke : "Tonight, the American people saw why Barack Obama chose Joe Biden, a statesman from Scranton who clearly has the experience and knowledge to be a great Vice President. Meanwhile, Governor Palin was a strong voice for the McCain campaign, but she didn't have any answers for America's middle class. While Joe Biden offered a clear plan to get our economy back on track, improve our standing in the world and rebuild the middle class, Sarah Palin did nothing more than champion the same failed polices of George Bush, that are ... Legislation signed by President Bush on Monday that requires sex offenders to provide Internet identifiers to state sex offender registries and tasks the Justice Department with creating a system that lets social networking sites compare their users' identifiers with those provided to a national sex offender registry may not achieve its intended aim of protecting children, according one high-tech policy expert who tracked the bill. That official, Center for Democracy and Technology general counsel John Morris , said Tuesday that the statute may prove "almost entirely worthless" and warned that it may also carry with it serious unintended consequences. The bill was introduced in January 2007 by Sens. Charles Schumer , D-N.Y., and John McCain , R-Ariz., now the GOP presidential nominee, and a companion measure was sponsored in the House by Rep. Earl Pomeroy , D-N.D. Pomeroy revised and reintroduced his bill after hearing concerns from CDT and other groups, but that version of the bill did not win Senate approval. Instead, the Senate version won out and minor modifications were made to alleviate Critics' biggest fears, Morris said, acknowledging that "we have fewer concerns than we once did." Pomeroy's retooled measure would have let probation officers who supervise sex offenders install software on offenders' computers to monitor their Web whereabouts and target supervision to those who actually pose threats to kids. Nevertheless, ... Source: clipmarks.com --- 37 days ago
clipped by: invictus Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com A core Democratic talking point against Sarah Palin is beginning to take shape: she is, Critics say, the female counterpart of the current President of the United States, not only in terms of policy and social conservatism, but even personality. "She's not a bulldog in lipstick," said one female Democratic operative, referencing a line from Palin's convention speech. "She's George Bush in lipstick."
