"Americans are gloomier about the direction of the country than at any point since 1992, and Democrats have matched their biggest advantage in 25 years as the party better able to deal with the nation's main problems," according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll . "Overall, Democrats enjoy a 21-point advantage over Republicans as the party best-equipped to handle the nation's problems." However, in a general election match up, Sen. Barack Obama leads Sen. John McCain, 51% to 44%, indicating McCain "continues to elude some of the anger aimed at his party and at President Bush." President Bush got a record low 31% approval rating in the poll. ... A Washington Post/ABC News poll shows Barack Obama leading John McCain in a general election match-up by 51 percent to 44 percent, an advantage beyond the 3 point margin of error but one that still shows a competitive race despite the fact that 8 in 10 Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction as the Bush administration winds down, and the Democrats are considered the party better able to handle the nation’s problems by a 21 point margin. That gap between the public’s faith in Democrats versus Republicans is the biggest since 1982. Hillary Clinton leads McCain 49 percent to 46 percent. The poll was conducted May 8-11. Obama is favored over Hillary Clinton by Democrats for their party’s nomination by 53 percent to 41 percent, a 2 point gain for Obama over last month’s poll, and that they believe Obama is more electable in November by 62 percent to 26 percent. The margin of error for the Democratic results is 4 percent. Fifty-six percent of Democrats said the length and contentious of the Democratic contest would make no difference for November while 27 percent said it would the party’s chances. Fifteen percent said it would help. ... Source: adspotlight.nationaljournal.com --- 7 hours ago
For weeks now, Oregon voters have been the target of campaign events and political advertisements from both Democratic candidates. In an effort to remind Oregonians that there's another candidate in the race, John McCain will today reach out to the Beaver State with his first TV spot there. " A Better Way " (subscription) spotlights McCain's determination to alleviate global warming without expansive government programs. Framing climate change as "a national security issue," McCain urges a third way between those who think "high taxes and crippling regulation is the solution" and another side that "denies the problem even exists." Throughout, the ad features images of rising gas prices and natural disasters to underline the urgency of the issue and our "obligation to future generations to take action and fix it," as McCain says. The McCain camp has so far made a concerted effort to amplify the message of his issue-oriented campaign tours with ads on health care and the economy . "A Better Way" comes as McCain embarks on a campaign swing intended to promote his commitment to the environment and, in the process, further separate himself from the policies of the Bush administration. The spot is an implicit reaction to ads from Democrats and third-party groups that have tried to chip away at McCain's image and portray him as little better than President Bush on the environment. Former secretary to state party chairman stands to get increased benefits ALBANY -- Republican lawmakers want the former secretary to the state GOP chairman to get a bigger public pension than the one she's on course to receive. A bill advanced by the Senate Rules Committee, controlled by Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and sponsored by Assemblyman Rob Walker, R-Hicksville, would improve Julie A. Cleary's benefits at the expense of New York state's pension fund and her employer, the Nassau County Board of Elections. The bill is now in committees. Cleary is the former secretary for Nassau County GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello. In 2006, Bruno helped Mondello become the head of the state party. The bill is one of dozens that surface each year to give specific public employees improved pensions. When successful, such legislation adds to the liabilities of the retirement fund, now at $154.5 billion in value. State officials have been looking at drains on the pension fund, including what Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has called widespread fraud by lawyers and other private professionals who have manipulated the system to obtain taxpayer-funded pensions. The bill for Cleary is uncommon in a few ways, say aides to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, a former Nassau County assemblyman. Cleary, who worked for the state Senate from 1998 to 2004, began working for the Nassau County elections commission in 2004, public records show. She i ... A new column from the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank provides a glimpse into the reception upstart Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr can expect from the Republican party. He points out a number of the highlights of previous Barr appearances which will provide rich fodder for the candidate’s opponents, the media and late night television. These include: - Licking whipped cream off the breasts of two women at a charity event - Accidentally firing a .38-caliber pistol through a glass door at a fundraiser - A humiliating appearance in the film “Borat” These will likely be taken as major gaffes in a season when politicians are being excoriated for things such as comments made by their former pastor, “misremembering” a landing in Kosovo more than a decade earlier, or mixing up their Shiites and Sunnis during a speech on Iraq. Barr added more fuel to the comedy fire during his election announcement by performing some linguistic gymnastics fit to make George W. Bush proud. He listed his grievances: government eavesdropping, suspending habeas corpus, runaway spending. Americans “ deserve better ,” he said. “ I believe they deserve better. And the Libertarian Party deserves they believe better .” Deserves they believe better? Still, Barr has his supporters, potentially including many of the GOP faithful who feel (as does Mr. Barr) that Senator McCain simply is not a true conservative. He ridiculed the McCain- ...
