*How General Motors Plans to Muddle Through* Rick Newman US News and World Report August 1, 2008 Image: http://www.usnews.com/blog_dbimages/120/flowchart2.jpg (http://www.usnews.com/blogs/flowchart/2008/8/1/how-general-motors-plans-to-muddle-through.html) I sat down recently with GM marketing Chief Mark LaNeve and asked about the company's prospects. Q:*There's been a lot of bad news lately: plunging car sales, more restructurings, the huge dropoff in trucks and SUVs. Do you feel like GM has a handle on where it's going?* A: What we don't have a handle on is the industry, especially at the retail level. We're doing better than Ford or Chrysler in some segments, but the only manufacturer doing well year-over-year is Honda. So the whole question is where is the industry going? I'd like to think it's somewhere near the bottom. What would we really save? We actually run our business now like it's four brands, with Pontiac, GMC, and Buick as one brand. And we've filled the portfolio for all of our brands. So if we killed one of the brands, we'd lose a business. We'd save a little short-term marketing money, but not ... Source: www.gminsidenews.com --- 9 days ago
*Handling The Fuel Sell* James Stanford 19 August 2008 www.goauto.com.au *General Motors R&D Chief discusses the issues with alternative fuels.* General Motors research and development Chief Larry Burns has urged stakeholders in alternative energy technologies to stop fighting among themselves. Visiting Melbourne last week, Mr Burns stated GM’s view that there is no one solution to the looming fuel crisis and that various energy technology backers should recognise this. “If this issue is as serious as it appears to be, then we can solve it,” Mr Burns said. “But we can’t solve it by being paralysed by all these different parochial views.” He said the various backers were creating a distorted picture of the viability of various alternative technologies that was detrimental. “What’s happening is that people who like natural gas over-promote natural gas and overly criticise all the other (alternative fuels),” he said. “The people who like ethanol overly promote ethanol and overly criticise all the other ones. The next thing you know, you’ve got all these people digging their heels in, thinking there’s a single answer and that’s the only thing you should invest in. In fact, we must invest in all of them.” Click here to continue article (http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story2/71D4FFBDA30A26FDCA2574AA000D1F1D) Image: http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story/71D4FFBDA30A26FDCA2574AA000D1F1D/$file/Holden_Burns_Reuss2.jpg *GM ... GM Leaders: Like each of you, I see a steady stream of media coverage and receive lots of questions about the continued challenges that GM and all automakers in the U.S. are facing. The rapid rise in fuel prices and change in auto industry sales mix have made market and economic conditions very challenging. We're responding quickly and aggressively with a steady stream of actions to better position GM for sustainable profitability and growth, including: A new global compact car program for Chevrolet, a next generation for the popular Chevy Aveo, and a high efficiency engine module for the U.S. market. Funding for production of the Chevy Volt extended-range electric vehicle. Addition of third shifts to our plants in Lordstown, Ohio and Orion, Michigan which build hot-selling Chevy and Pontiac cars. Cessation of production at four plants that build pickups, SUVs and medium-duty trucks. A strategic review of the Hummer brand. Beyond these initiatives, our GMNA team continues to develop further action plans to ...
