Smivs writes "New research shows how steel will fail at high temperatures because of the magnetic properties of the metal. Scientists say an understanding of how the Twin Towers collapsed will help them develop the materials needed to build Fusion reactors. The New York buildings fell when their steel backbones lost strength in the fires that followed the plane impacts. Dr Sergei Dudarev told the British Association Science Festival that improved steels were now being sought. The principal Scientist at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) said one of the first applications for these better performing metals would be in the wall linings of Fusion reactors." Don't be afraid. You can read that headline again. I'll wait for you... Aaaand, okay: With cold Fusion nowhere in sight, hot Fusion looks to be the cleanest way to whip up some atomic energy. However, the steel needed to line the reactor may not be able to take the heat. UK scientists said that temperatures inside reactors are nearly identical to those reached on the floors of the World Trade Center that were struck by planes on September 11, 2001—and that the tragedy itself yielded helpful data. Here, on the eve of the terrorist attack's 7th anniversary, is the deal: By studying the WTC's structural weakening and collapse, scientists can identify the needs of new steel technology in the next atomic age. Steel may truly melt at 1,150ºC, but as low as 500ºC, the iron molecules that are held strong by magnetism at cooler temperatures start to slip, Sergei "Duder" "His Dudeness" "El Dudarino" Dudarev, principal Scientist at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), told BBC News. Imperfections in the metal enhance the oozing even more. The Twin Towers started to weaken when temperatures crossed the 500ºC threshold, and gave way without ever actually melting. Today, Dudarev and others are at work on the world's first "large-scale" Fusion reactor, called ITER . What the scientists need, though, is a steel that can ease past these temperatures without buckling. "We need to look at the magnetic properties of steel, [and] vary ...

Purdue University has reprimanded Scientist Rusi Taleyarkhan for research misconduct, according to a statement released yesterday. Taleyarkhan will remain on the faculty but will lose his named professorship after a committee rejected an appeal against two findings of misconduct. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080827WoodsonTaleyarkhan.html “In considering the sanctions to impose, I have been guided by the principle that the sanctions should address and be proportional to the specific findings of research misconduct,” said Purdue Provost Randy Woodson. “In my judgment as Purdue's chief academic officer, it is inappropriate for a faculty member who has been found guilty of research misconduct to hold a title of a named university professor.” Purdue previously released a report stating that Taleyarkhan arranged for a student’s name to be added to a paper to “create the appearance that the student had witnessed the experiment reported in the paper” and he later claimed the paper as independent confirmation of his experiments on a tabletop Fusion device using ‘sonofusion’, where Fusion is created by sound waves collapsing bubbles. ...

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic software developer to work on cutting-edge intelligent systems, such as decision support and reasoning tools, data Fusion and situation awareness systems, and advanced visualizations to support decision-making. You will design and implement a variety of AI algorithms and end-user interfaces in Java. You will work in small project-oriented groups with a principal investigator/Scientist and a senior software engineer. You will also have the opportunity to attend conferences and have your work published. We require a solid background in designing, programming, and documenting complex software systems on Windows and/or Unix/Linux, and a minimum of two years of experience as a professional software developer. Candidates must have demonstrable experience with professional software engineering practices, reading/generating software specs, developing/executing test plans, and implementing software coding guidelines. Any first-hand experience with AI algorithms, human-computer interaction design, GIS, and decision support systems will be considered a strong plus. Familiarity with computer graphics, data Fusion, database management, and XML is also a plus. Candidates should have demonstrated capability to work independently and effectively within a team environment. Code and writing samples may be requested. Applicants selected may be subject to a government security investigat ...

The Wild World of Batwoman (Episode 515) This film from 1966 is the cinematic version of a train wreck: it's horrible, yet strangely compelling to watch. The setup in a nutshell: a crimefighter called Batwoman and her bevy of curvaceous assistants (collectively known as the Batgirls) thwart a mad Scientist's plan to steal a secret experimental weapon from a high-tech research lab. If you are wondering if this is as lame as it sounds, it isn't. It's far, far worse. The plot goes something like this. A couple of the Batgirls witness a murder and report it to Batwoman. I am not sure how the murder relates to the rest of the plot, actually. But the nefarious villain Rat Fink (who looks like a mutant Fusion of Zorro and a Mexican wrestler) is after a secret new high-tech weapon, the Atomic Hearing Aid. (Don't ask.) His minions kidnap one of the Batgirls, which brings Batwoman into the fray. Well, that's the general idea. Except Batwoman doesn't do much more than sit around in her house and order the Batgirls around. The Batgirls, meanwhile, spend a lot of their time dancing. Batwoman Batwoman herself has to be seen to be believed. That's her in the picture just above this paragraph. The Batgirls don't wear a uniform, just regular clothing. (Tight regular clothing.) As for Batwoman's name, she has no connection with the comic-book superhero Batman. In fact, on the title card of the movie, there's a disclaimer that the movie is not associate ...

Both believe in Fusion! I recently attended a Capitol Hill briefing on the ITER , the international Fusion energy experiment. For the record, ITER once stood for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, but since the general public tends to get freaked out over anything "nuclear", the name was dropped ( MRI anyone?), but the acronym stuck. One of the first slides in the excellent presentation by Dr. Ned Sauthoff, Director and project manager of the U.S. ITER project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory , showed images of Dr. Otto Octavius, the main villain in 2004's Spider-man 2 . "Hollywood says Fusion is a part of our future," he began. Fusing the atomic nuclei of two light atoms results in a release of energy. ITER will fuse deuterium and tritium together to create 10 times the amount of energy originally needed to make the nuclei stick together. The comic's notorious mad-Scientist desperately wants to overrun the world with cheap Fusion power. Unfortunately, he ends up going insane after his experiment fails and results in a set of artificially intelligent (as well as heat and magnetism resistant) mechanical arms permanently fused to his spine, along with the death of his wife. He becomes a serious threat to the denizens of New York City. But Hollywood has always had a thing for Fusion; remember the 1980s trilogy Back to the Future ? Dr. Sauthoff did. An image of the "Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor" popped up in the following ...
