I've got a question about the YQ Fuel Surcharge that was raised this past summer. For a variety of reasons, I've already booked a summer 2009 BA flight PUW (Pullman, little US airport)-SEA-LHR with miles and will now have to buy an accompanying ticket to match the itinerary. Basically my university will pay my way, not my wife's. But the money will come out of a budget line I'd prefer to use otherwise, and I've obviously got time to wait on booking the flight. For my itinerary, the base fare is generally fine for high season (~$1000 r/t), but the YQ Surcharge is of course substantial (~$400 r/t). So I'm curious, especially on a day with a substantial crude price drop, how "sticky" are these surcharges? I generally assume that they're rapidly raised and only reluctantly dropped, but I thought I'd check with folks who have more experience in this regard. ...

Just received an e-mail from United Vacations, and saw this in one of the promotions, "For added confidence in your purchase, take advantage of our new FuelSafe protection program, this is automatically included when you purchase the Cancellation Waiver or "WorldCareSM Complete Coverage" plan. You'll never be subject to any additional Fuel Surcharge increases." Could that ever happen? If there's a Fuel Surcharge instituted after you book, are you subject to the increase? I figured there would be some uproar here if that were the case, but found nothing through the search. ...

After today's drop of almost $8, the oil prices have declined by almost 30% from their peak in July 2008. Should we not be seeing an immediate adjustment in the Fuel Surcharge? Additionally, now that oil has been above $70 a barrel for more than one year, shouldn't the airlines be required to incorporate the cost of Fuel into their fares? ...

Found out that the Fuel/insurance Surcharge that CX levies, at least for HKG-DEL is the same as for HKG-JFK?? Not sure what exactly this implies? The cheapest fare to DEL is around HKD5000 and that to JFK is around HKD8000. On both, there is a HKD1664 Fuel/insurance Surcharge.. Any ideas - after a certain threshold of flying time, the Fuel Surcharge becomes the same for all destinations?? Cheers!.. ...
