We’ve been waiting around for awhile for a laptop that uses methanol Fuel cells . Finally, PolyFuel has finished a working prototype for a Fuel Cell powered laptop, the Lenovo T40 ThinkPad. The laptop runs on direct methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC), and each methanol cartridge provides power for about 10 hours of use. There are some great features to this and some not so great features. First off, the battery prototype is quite a bit lighter than the OEM battery the Lenovo uses, which is great, but it is larger, which is not so great. It offers three times the battery life than the current battery, yet 10 hours per charge doesn’t seem like a whole lot of use time. I don’t think I’d enjoy refilling the thing every day, sometimes twice a day. I’m hoping they’ll be able to squeeze a few more hours out of each charge before putting it on the market. Researchers believe that if they can get the Fuel Cell to operate at 100% capacity, they will be able to get 10 times the power of a comparable li-ion battery. That would be pretty stunning. MIT is already on the ball with improving efficiency of DMFCs. Another great feature is that the Fuel Cell can be made from biodegradable or recyclable materials -- a big plus. And, of course, the fact that the Fuel itself is renewable is a significant feature. But just where to buy and how much methanol cartridges will cost is still going to play a big role in the laptop’s marketability. PolyFuel believes the lap ...

Every few years the press gets excited about the potential for Fuel Cell-powered laptops. And then the concept goes away. We wrote about in 2003 , explaining why it wasn't a big deal, and again in 2005 . So here we are in 2008 and, once again, we're hearing stories about new Fuel cells for laptops that are going to be demoed (not, of course, actually put into production). The benefits of a Fuel Cell-powered laptop are that on a single Cell, a laptop can last a lot longer (usually the estimate is about 10 hours). That sure beats the 3 to 5 hours most laptops get on traditional lithium-ion batteries today. But... there's a huge problem with Fuel cells that almost never gets discussed in the press: you need to keep buying replacements and then you need to carry those replacement Fuel Cell cartridges with you. It's like back to the bad old days when your consumer electronics products all had non-rechargeable, disposable batteries. It was a huge pain. That's why everyone switched to rechargeable batteries. When you switch to disposable Fuel cells, then you're adding an ongoing expense (much greater than electricity) and forcing users to keep carrying around spares. Yes, for some folks that ability to go for a longer time without plugging in will be worth it -- but for plenty of people it seems like the "cost" is a lot worse than the benefit. 2008 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Diary - Day One Day 1 At Automobile Magazine , we've been interested in spending some quality time in the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell vehicle ever since GM began its roll-out of a 100-car demonstration fleet earlier this year. Part of the program involves putting the cars into the hands of ordinary people in the suburban New York, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. areas, where there are hydrogen refueling sites. My relocation to Westchester County, New York, puts me within striking distance of the refueling site in White Plains and the one at GM's service training facility in Ardsley, so I've signed up for a two-week stint to see what it's like to live with this Car of the (Possible) Future. I go to pick up the car and spend a couple hours learning about it and getting a hands-on lesson in refueling it from Brad Beauchamp, Driver Relationship Manager for the Fuel Cell program. Essentially, the converted Chevy Equinox is an electric car, one that gets its electricity from a Fuel Cell rather than a battery. The Fuel Cell stack, located under the hood, uses compressed hydrogen gas (stored in three carbon-fiber tanks under the cargo floor and the back seat) to make that electricity. A nickel-metal-hydride battery also helps power the car - mostly to smooth out the throttle response - and it's charged chiefly by the regenerative brakes (although the Fuel Cell can charge it if necessary). This is a front-wheel-dri ...
