CNET reader Joe popped into his local branch of Fry's to – we presume – fondle and drool over a mountain of hot hot consumer Electronics. While there he spotted this, the as-yet unseen 120GB Zune. Seeing just six on... ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 4 days ago
I've hung out a lot in the Comcast forums because a relative, and a couple of friends, are Comcast users. Today I helped a cousin's Charter in-laws. Seems that father-in-law fired up the computer one day, and no Internet. Checked the modem, and no lights. Called Charter, and they sent out a tech. Replace the old modem with a brand new Motorola SB-5101. From the Comcast forums, I gather this is one of the best out there. Tech then left without hooking up to the computer. I was a bit confused; but it transpires that the tech used the father-in-law's laptop to provision the modem, but did not finish up the desktop. Turns out that the old modem was connected to the computer with a USB cable. The problem is, the tech apparently did not know how to set up USB drivers. Or, maybe...does the SB-5101 have USB drivers? I fired up the computer, and got a screen for Windows XP Home Edition, asking for an install disk for drivers for the hardware. This is an ancient HP Pavilion 8260, probably originally Windows 98, and no Ethernet port. Tech was flummoxed by the need for USB drivers? Solution was a trip to Circuit City, and a new NIC. No $10 cards, like Fry's Electronics, and Morgan Hill is too far from any place I know of with cheap stuff. Have one final issue, but not a Charter problem; more like a broken Winsock. Never had to fix one of those, before. Trace route is sweet, though. 7 ms to his first hop, and 49 ms to my ATTIS connection in San José ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 29 days ago
I have a Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop. For the past 4 weeks it shuts down by itself. I took it to Fry's Electronics, they took it apart and found lots of dust, so I assumed it was a heat issue. I took the laptop home and turned it on. After 20 mintues the screen went blank, the laptop was still running, but I had to shut down. This morning I turned it on at 11:25 AM and it worked fine untl 2:30 PM. What could be causing the laptop to shut down? I have two screen shots of the temp of the CPU when I 1st turned on the laptop and the temp about 2-3 hours later. ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 18 days ago
I have a three year old generic laptop from Fry's Electronics. They are giving me a warranty replacement computer, but they no longer make mine, so they are substituting a refurbished Compaq. My original computer had a Pentium Centrino, duo-core 1.6 mhz processor. I think it cost about $650 at the time. The refurb Compaq sells in the store for $379. It has an AMD Athlon, 1.6mhz processor. The Technician guy also said that based on that price, that's as much as they would be willing to give me in store credit toward any other replacement computer. I know nothing about AMD's, and I'm worrying about them trying to screw me. I was thinking about insisting on a Pentium. Not that I think that they're any better than AMD's. I just know more about them, and I like to go with what I know. ... Source: blog.box.net --- 20 days ago

I have read up as much as I can about telephone circuits but I'm not at all good with Electronics (as you'll find out when I ask my question). I understand how a simple relay works and that's about it  OK - here's what I want to do. I have some electronic equipment that has a relay change state when an event occurs (doesn't matter what the event is). I have a Linksys ATA and an RJ11 cable. I have a remote server listening for off hook syslog messages that are sent when the ATA goes off hook. I don't want to fry my ATA, so can anyone predict what would happen if I were use the relay to short circuit the two cables coming out of the FXO port ? Would the protection circuitry kick in and save my ATA from oblivion - or would I have a little fire on my desk ? More importantly - would it go off hook? (ROFL) ...
