Written on 5 July 1997, 11 years ago. The final ocean passage was notable for one good reason: it was the first leg of the whole journey on which I didn't throw up (although I still felt bloody awful for the two-and-a-half days it took to sail from Makemo to Tahiti). I'd chundered from Pahia to Whangarei, hurled from Whangarei to Mangareva, spewed from Mangareva to Amanu and vomited from Amanu to Makemo, but I held it down from Makemo to Tahiti. Despite this, sea legs are still things that happen to other people, and... ...

Two weeks ago, French doctor Michel Maure fled from Marseilles on his Yacht after the state prosecutor recommended a jail sentence of four years. Maure was found guilty of illegal practice, wounding and endangering life, and was scheduled to be sentenced on September 8. Evidence against Maure came from 96 botched operations, including an account of one patient's breast implant sliding into her armpit overnight. They call him Dr. Death in France partly because his name is pronounced "mort" (which means death), but mostly because he has no formal medical training and a lengthy record of performing disastrous plastic surgery operations, leaving his patients physically scarred and mutilated. read more ...

Apparently there's a firestorm of controversy over the uniform Ralph Lauren designed for the U.S. team to wear at the opening Olympic ceremonies, and it's not hard to see why. For starters, the damned Ralph Lauren Polo logo totally upstages the Olympic rings logo. It's huge! Also, as shown in a picture after the jump, the uniforms look pretty cheap up close, probably because they were made as part of a rush job sent to Chinese "tailors" at the last minute . The American Politics Journal wrote , "Lauren – and most likely his son David – celebrated not the spirit of athletic competition but themselves and their brand, morphing our athletes into unpaid billboards for the "Polo™" pony and rider that has helped bring the Laurens great... riches." Well, sure, yes, but everyone is kind of past the whole notion of the Olympics as unspoiled, non-commercial amateur competition no? Which brings us to another key criticism of the uniforms, familiar to anyone who has followed the presidential race: They are elitst. Wrote one commenter on Project Rungay : These outfits presented the United States athletes as rich snobs, frankly. They made the team look like a 1948 Yacht club. Also, the design essentially copies from British, French, and Italian uppercrust aesthetics, thereby undermining the independent streak the U.S. tries so hard to boast in the international community. Project Rungay sort of agreed, saying the uniforms "look fine," like "cla ...

Do you feel kingly yet? Photo: Courtesy of Sean John We know we're not alone when we say this, but we completely heart Diddy. His brazen love of self, propensity for speaking in the third person, how much he enjoys being rich. Some have called him "arrogant," and his grand displays of nouveau riche wealth "vulgar" but, to paraphrase Diana Vreeland, better to be vulgar than boring. And Diddy is definitely not boring (case in point: his recent YouTube dispatch warning that levels of global "bitchassness" are reaching record highs). So we weren't surprised to hear that he was naming his new fragrance I Am King. (Though we were surprised to hear it's expected to make more than $100 million globally in its first year alone. For reals? Damn! ) WWD reports that the new cologne will launch exclusively at Macy's in December before going global in February, to be followed by an I Am Queen perfume for all the lay days in 2009. What's in a name? "I believe in positive affirmations," Diddy says. "If I say, 'I am not going to succeed, I'm a loser,' then that's what I am going to be. If we say we're kings and we say we're queens, that's what we're going to be. It has nothing to do with being arrogant." The print and TV campaign for I Am King portray Combs as a mogul in a suit, cavorting around Monaco and Saint-Tropez with models Bar Refaeli and Ana Paula, on jet skis around the French Riviera, lounging aboard his palatial Yacht and playing the t ...

Ikkyu, the Zen master, was very clever even as a boy. His teacher had a precious teacup, a rare antique. Ikkyu happened to break this cup and was greatly perplexed. Hearing the footsteps of his teacher, he held the pieces of the cup behind him. When the master appeared, Ikkyu asked: "Why do people have to die?" "This is natural," explained the older man. "Everything has to die and has just so long to live." Ikkyu, producing the shattered cup, added: "It was time for your cup to die." ~ zen koan From as far back as I am able to remember I have lived with the awareness, conscious or not, that most, if not all, things are transient. This may well be the reason (or one of) I prefer my life and my surroundings to be free of clutter. Of course, I use the word prefer only in that this is not possible, at least not all the time. And I do collect stuff. Not zombies of any sort, as my previous entry may have implied. On this note, I'd had planned to share the story of the Oyster Boy . Long story (and his story  is ) short, between mweb's fickleness and my laziness, it just didn't happen and so Voodoo Girl it was. That said, I did, very briefly, date a French dude once. Sadly I had to decline his invitation to sail round the world with him in his father's Yacht. I may have been only 18 but I knew even then that there was adventure, and then there was plain stupidity. The point is. I collect thoughts and words and ideas far more readily than I do ...

Filed under: Decor , Journeys , Wheels , Real Estate Developments Financial whiz turned "lifestyle designer" Richard Nilsson apparently felt that plain old luxury had lost its luster, so he decided to focus on "extreme luxury." When he was running a business empire Nilsson was only able to take one week off per year, so for his first project he came up with the "Résidence Supérieur" concept as an ultimate retreat where vacationing moguls and movie stars could pack as much luxury and privacy into their vacation as possible, cost be damned. The first RS is the Villa Oxygene in Cannes on the French Riviera. In addition to ultra-luxe surroundings, it includes exotic sports cars , a private jet and helicopter, Yacht, butler, chef, bodyguards and basically anything else you could wish for. Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria recently shot an ice cream commercial there, and Nilsson is now planning other equally outrageous outposts. See the gallery for pix. Filed under: Water Just a follow-up on a story we've been following for a while . The lavish 269-foot Yacht which once belonged to Saddam Hussein will be headed back to Iraq. Sail World reports that though the Cayman island firm Sudeley, which is part-owned by King Abdullah of Jordan, told a French commercial court in Nice that it is the legal owner, that claim was rejected for lack of evidence. They ruled that ownership should be given back to Iraq. Saddam Hussein had ordered the lavish Yacht in 1981 but never took delivery of it. He was afraid that it would be bombed and so he left it in Jeddah Harbor in the hands of the Saudi Arabian Royal Family, who named it the Royal Yacht Al Yamamah (The Dove). The Yacht has accommodations for 28 in one master cabin, nine double cabins and four twin cabins as well as room for 35 crew. Rumor has it that the Yacht has a hospital, swimming pools, gold taps, and a mosque as well as a missile defense system and a mini-submarine. She was renamed the Ocean Breeze and last year Sudeley tried to sell it for $34.45 million through Burgess. Riviera Radio reports that the Yacht has now left Nice port and is on its way to Greece and that she may end up anchored in Basra harbor and turned into a museum. Yesterday, we picked up on the Page Six item about Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich fleeing Tuscany in his Yacht after being turned away from a restaurant. Today, a spokesperson for Millhouse Capital, Abramovich's London-based holding company, said there's no way the story could be true since Roman is in Sardinia. Cityfile: "Mr. Abramovich has been vacationing in Sardinia since he left from his home in Moscow at the beginning of last week. He has not visited Tuscany, and therefore could not have been turned away from this restaurant. Furthermore, he has not owned the Yacht mentioned in the article, Le Grand Bleu, for over 3 years now. I do not know who is aboard Le Grand Bleu at present." Well whoever's "aboard Le Grand Bleu at present" is probably having a delightful time.
