French Kicks released Swimming , fronted by the dreamy ("post-punk for cocktail hour," we called it) " Abandon " and some coffee-fresh cover art, back in May. The New York quartet are heading on tour to support said collection, but are also offering up the four-song Covers EP, which finds them putting their mark on the Ramones, the Zombies, the Shirelles (via Carole King), and today's focus, Lindsey Buckingham. So why a covers EP? Vocalist Nick Stumpf: We've always loved the Beach Boys' Party! record where the Beach Boys went into a studio room with some friends and played really loose and live, mainly cover songs, and then put it out ... We don't have any friends, in this case, but the spirit is the same. With the exception of "Trouble," which was recorded at the same time as the songs on the record and has overdubs, everything is completely live, and a few we figured out how to play on the spot just before we recorded them. Take a listen to "Trouble" while you study the Covers album art: ...

A French newspaper claims Mac Pros could be giving off toxic fumes containing the dangerous chemical benzene. It follows months of speculation by users who’ve noticed an unusual smell. The newspaper Liberation says France’s National Institute of Industrial Environment and Risks has analysed the machine and found the odour contains benzene, a compound of carbon and hydrogen officially linked to serious health effects including cancer. The institute reportedly carried out the tests after a researcher, who’d ordered a Max Pro to work on a study of molecular structures, developed irritation in the eyes, nose and throat. Apple [...] ...

(I promise, I'll update the concert calendar over there today or tomorrow. It's been a long few weeks.) Anyway, got word today that Lou favorite Headlights is one of the marquee out-of-towners playing this year's Play:stl music festival , which runs from September 18-20. The band plays on Thursday, September 18. Other notable touring bands include the Photo Atlas and Office (September 19, Cicero's), Jen Foster (9/19, Cicero's acoustic stage) and the French Kicks (Sepetember 20, Blueberry Hill's Duck Room). A $15 wristband gets you into the festival for three days. My Brightest Diamond -- a.k.a. Shara Worden, who impressed as the opening act for the Decemberists last year with a mix of PJ Harvey ferocity and Cat Power delicacy -- is also playing Cicero's, on November 11. Her second album is called A Thousand Shark's Teeth . MBD, "Dragonfly": -- Annie Zaleski ...

The French Kicks, The M's, and The Pomegranates at Double Door, 9 p.m. September 17, 2008 When reformed post-punk band French Kicks released its debut album, One Time Bells , in 2002, it looked as though the quartet might actually follow The Strokes and The Walkmen into New York's arty garage-rock pantheon. It doesn't look that way anymore. Linked to their hometown sound more by geography than genre, the Kicks began to chart their own course on 2004's The Trial Of The Century , moving from early-'80s influences to mid- and late-'80s ones: less guitar, more keyboard, less punk, more pop. That trend has now fully consumed the band, as the new Swimming is total pop throughout, with lots of guitar-strums, simple beat, and harmonies. Opening: The M's, The Pomegranates. ...

We really didn’t need visual confirmation of this touchscreen monster’s prowess, but it’s always a treat watch tech marvels like these on tape and especially try to decipher a foreign language in the process. Not surprisingly, these French guys are comparing the Touch HD to the ever-popular iPhone 3G and the Samsung i900 . Any bets on which Kicks ass the most? "I want my shoes. Destroy the world. Goodbye." Photo by Chris Buck Stephin Merritt, the musician behind ventures as diverse as the Magnetic Fields and the Lemony Snicket audiobooks, is having a good year. The Magnetic Fields' eighth studio album, Distortion , a twisted, feedback drenched homage to the Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy , came out in January. More recently, Merritt's been immersed in writing the music and lyrics for a theatrical adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline , timed for release at the same time as the film version, directed and animated in 3D by Nightmare Before Christmas creator Henry Selick. We spoke on the verge of the Magnetic Fields' first full US tour for Distortion , which Kicks off October 10 and lands in Jersey City, at the Loews Jersey Theatre, on October 23 . In between rehearsals for Coraline and recording new Magnetic Fields material, Merritt still found the time to converse about New York's financial collapse (which his mother may or may not have predicted), the fundamental untrustworthiness of the French (and of Europeans in general), and about how everyone in Merritt's new hometown is shockingly shallow. ...

We don't know about you, but we're spending our Labor Day Monday literally counting the seconds until Gossip Girl returns tonight at 8. And from what we've seen of the season premiere, we're in for a treat. The first five minutes of tonight's episode appeared online last week and they are predictably awesome. The second season Kicks off with most of our heroes getting ready to attend the final party of the season in the Hamptons (a White Party, natch). Nate has shacked up with an older woman (Madchen Amick); Serena is moping around looking upset (Blake Lively, as wooden and lifeless as ever, makes Mischa Barton look like Meryl Streep); Chuck Bass, in full French Mime regalia has not one, but THREE girls taking their tops off for him; and good ol' Dan is making out with a girl way byond his reach after interning with a famous writer over the summer. It all looks deliciously trashy and entertaining. Recently, show executive producer Stephanie Savage said that the second season is going to "go deeper and twist things further," which sounds insane to us. It's hard to imagine the show getting any more risqué. The first season featured sex and drug use that rivaled a late-night Cinemax romp, all during family hour. What could Gossip Girl possibly do for an encore? In no particular order, here are five things we think will happen in season two:  read more » ...
