The Journal Constitution is reporting that Childress has agreed to a a three-year, fully guaranteed contract worth far more than the $20 million originally proposed. It will remain to be seen how this affects NBA Free agency in the future. Any player not getting what they want can flaunt a European contract at their team and will have to be taken seriously. But, there are still many players who want to be in the NBA even if they are making far less than they could in Europe. Josh Smith, the Hawks' other big Free agent, was wined and dined by the Sixers and then they signed Brand. Then, he was wined and dined by the Clippers before they got Camby. Yesterday, the club locked up its last remaining restricted Free agent by signing defenseman Dennis Wideman to a four-year deal to avoid arbitration. Boston then placed veteran right wing Glen Murray on waivers, the first step toward buying out the final year of his contract. Wideman's deal is worth $15.5 million, with annual salaries of $3.25 million, $3.75 million, $4 million and $4.5 million and a cap hit of $3.875 million per season - quite a leap from the one-year, $600,000 deal he signed a year ago. But Wideman's play also took quite a leap under the tutelage of coach Claude Julien. He was second only to captain Zdeno Chara among defensemen and sixth overall on the team with a career-high 13 goals and 36 points in 81 games, more than double the six goals he scored in 75 games split between St. Louis and Boston the previous year.
