United States secretary of defense Robert Gates and Colombia minister of defense Juan Manuel Santos write in The New York Times today: The dramatic rescue of 15 hostages this month by Colombia’s special forces underscored how far Colombia has progressed — with the strong support of the United States — from a nation under siege by narcoterrorists and paramilitary vigilantes to one poised to become a linchpin of security and prosperity in South America. … [T]o achieve lasting peace and stability, Colombia must have more foreign investment and Free Trade. Congress’s approval of the Trade promotion agreement would establish a commitment to open markets that would increase growth and investment. Moreover, it would allow American products to enter Colombia duty-Free. Colombia’s hard-won freedom from violence can be sustained only through economic prosperity. Together, as partners, we must see Colombia’s transformation to completion. In winning the war, we must also consolidate the peace. ...

http://www.thestandard.com/news/2008/07 ... laundering QUOTE: E-Gold, an Internet-based payment service, and three owners have pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to money laundering, the U.S. Department of Justice said Monday. E-Gold, based in Nevis, West Indies, and corporate affiliate Gold & Silver Reserve each pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to conspiracy to engage in money laundering and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business. Ive never really delt with EGold, I know some of the conversations Ive seen in various places where people wanted to Trade with it scared me a little though. Sometimes I wonder just how much money laundering is really going on online. Given the ease of automating pretty much everything it cant be too hard to do at all. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama landed in Berlin Thursday, kicking off the European leg of his overseas trip amid high expectations. The German capital is the first stop on a whirlwind tour that will take the presumptive Democratic nominee to Germany, France and Britain in an effort to burnish his foreign credentials. Shortly after arriving, Obama and his retinue made their way from the Tegel Airport to the chancellery that sits across from the city's famed glass-domed Riechstag. A column of black BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars ferried the candidate to a private meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Overhead, a police helicopter kept watch. Some 700 police have been deployed during the visit, which lasts through Friday morning. Obama paused inside the gates of the chancellery to wave at a group of Bavarian 11th-graders whose class happened to be ending its tour of the building as he was arriving. "We were really close," said an excited Michaela Schmid. "It was super, a real highlight." Inside, Obama and Merkel shook hands and exchanged small talk just outside her office before heading behind closed doors. On Wednesday, Merkel told reporters that she planned to talk about climate change and global Free Trade with Obama and made clear that Germany will stand by its refusal to send combat troops to southern Afghanistan. The chancellery is an imposing sandstone-and-concrete cube. The 205,000-square-foot building faces the re ...

Options are dwindling for both teams and Free agents as teams continue to make moves. Here is what is going on around the league today: Josh Childress has indeed left the Hawks to play in Greece. The Journal Constitution is reporting that Childress has agreed to a a three-year, fully guaranteed contract worth far more than the $20 million originally proposed. It will remain to be seen how this affects NBA Free agency in the future. Any player not getting what they want can flaunt a European contract at their team and will have to be taken seriously. But, there are still many players who want to be in the NBA even if they are making far less than they could in Europe. Josh Smith, the Hawks' other big Free agent, was wined and dined by the Sixers and then they signed Brand. Then, he was wined and dined by the Clippers before they got Camby. Now, the only team under the cap that could offer him more than the MLE is the Grizzlies but they are in cost cutting mode. So, it seems that Josh Smith is stuck with the Hawks unless they can work a sign and Trade with someone. Sources say that the Hawks are offering Smith a six-year deal worth $60 million. The Journal Constitution is reporting that this isn't true, however and that the Hawks have never offered anything near that. The San Antonio Spurs re-signed 36 year old Kurt Thomas on Tuesday. Thomas joined the Spurs last season in the Trade that sent Brent Barry and Francisco Elson . In a r ...

Training camp is still two months away, but the final pieces are already falling into place for the Bruins. Yesterday, the club locked up its last remaining restricted Free agent by signing defenseman Dennis Wideman to a four-year deal to avoid arbitration. Boston then placed veteran right wing Glen Murray on waivers, the first step toward buying out the final year of his contract. Wideman's deal is worth $15.5 million, with annual salaries of $3.25 million, $3.75 million, $4 million and $4.5 million and a cap hit of $3.875 million per season - quite a leap from the one-year, $600,000 deal he signed a year ago. But Wideman's play also took quite a leap under the tutelage of coach Claude Julien. He was second only to captain Zdeno Chara among defensemen and sixth overall on the team with a career-high 13 goals and 36 points in 81 games, more than double the six goals he scored in 75 games split between St. Louis and Boston the previous year. More importantly, he improved his play in his own zone, finishing with 110 blocked shots and a plus-11 that ranked him second on the team. He was a minus-10 the previous year, and minus-31 as a rookie with the Blues in 2005-06. "He's the type of player we targeted to bring in,"said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli, who acquired Wideman for high-scoring forward Brad Boyes at the 2006 Trade deadline. "Over the course of this year, he has truly entered into a new level of play. It's one we h ...
