My Plastic-Free challenge is almost over. In part, I'm relieved, as it's been hard work to deal with such a big restriction on what we as a family can buy and eat. I'm looking forward to little things like yoghurt (yoghurt pots are polystyrene, I never did find it in glass), crisps and celery. My husband is particularly keen to see bin Bags making a reappearance in the kitchen. And, truth be told, so am I, but will I revert back to all my previous Plastic-wrapped ways tomorrow? I don't think so. I will be writing a piece about my conclusions this week (look out for it on the Magazine index ) but until then - and barring any Plastic blowouts in the final few hours! - here is the full list of Plastic I accumulated this month: 62 Disposable nappies (made with bio-Plastic) 15 Nappy Bags 4 Small juice bottles and 1 big one 5 Lids to glass bottles 4 Drinking straws 1 Packet of nappy wipes 1 Plastic cup 1 Fork 4 Containers from takeaway meal 1 Strawberry punnet 1 Carrier bag 2 Milk bottles 1 Lid to a jar of chilli sauce 1 Wrapping from a wooden toothbrush 4 Pieces of sticky clothes cleaning paper 1 Paper / polystyrene cup 1 Balloon stick 2 Takeaway tea lids 4 Beer widgets GRAND TOTAL: 116 items For comparison, the previous month's tally was 603 items including 120 nappies, 68 cups or lids, 33 milk or drinks bottles, 22 food trays / pots, 37 carrier Bags and 67 other food packets. So although I found it impossible to give up Plastic comple ...

City authorities in Delhi have rounded up 20,000 Free-roaming cattle in the past year to improve health and safety standards. "Last month alone we caught about 2,000 cows," said an official from the city, which presented the annual figures to the Delhi High Court last week. The court has repeatedly ordered authorities to clear the streets of the animals, which it says are a threat to traffic and a health risk. Many of the cows belong to farmers who do not have space to house their cattle and thus let them wander at will. The captured animals are sent to state-run shelters, then auctioned. Animal welfare activists say the cows, considered sacred by Hindus, live in terrible conditions, eating garbage from open dumps and often dying after eating Plastic Bags. "One post-mortem of a cow revealed 14 kilos of Plastic," said N. G Jayasimha of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. ...

Whether you work in a Fortune 500 company or a one-person home office, you're going to use office supplies. Here's eight ways to go green that will also save your business some green. 1. Buy in Bulk Buying in bulk makes sense for a variety of reasons. You'll save money over the long-haul. You'll make less trips to the office supply store. You'll also cut down on packaging such as cardboard boxes and Plastic Bags. Ordering supplies in bulk online will also get you lower or Free shipping. 2. Reuse and Recycle Packaging Regardless of how large your order is, you're going to end up with packaging to dispose. Use Earth911 to find out where to recycle packaging. Before you do, though, consider ways it can be reused: * Cardboard boxes can be used to ship packages or move items around, and they can be collapsed when not in use to take up little space. * Plastic Bags, bubble wrap and packing peanuts can be used to store and protect valuables. Tradition has it that way back in the day, you could snarf up more Free stuff at the State Fair than you could carry off - I still treasure a little Heinz pickle pin I got there when I was a kid - and that the giveaways, in these lean times, have gone away. You can still find Free stuff'n'trinkets, although in most cases, somebody wants you to fill out a credit card application to get it. I did get my sneakers cleaned, but had to fend off a pitch for the cleaning product, which tempers the advantage. Still, I ran across a couple of choice items. At the Oncor booth in the Coliseum, they were giving away nylon totes that you can wear like a backpack, a handy alternative to those Plastic Bags you have to carry in your hand. If you don't want to be a walking advertisement, you can wear it backwards. We also struck pay dirt in the Food and Fiber Building, where we got nice new Texas highway maps (I love maps), an excellent guide to state parks, and region-by-region brochures on state historical sites. For my favorite freebie, though, I'll have to wait: Every fall, the Dallas Farmers Market gives away a beautiful, frame-worthy calendar. In recent years, they've had 'em at the fair, but this time, they're handing out "calendar coupons" to pick one up at the market on Oct. 18. I guess this encourages people to come to the market, but it had been my single favorite Free fair item. ...

I actually see the dude on the left in my room everyday, because Zahiril Adzim (Bob) was in Air Con, and I have the poster on my wall :P. Haven't watched KAMI, but great stuff at Air Con, this Bob. That's an Amir Muhammad and Liza Manshoor poster print behind them - it's the Wayang Kita-Kita Poster Show , that , so I suppose it's somewhat related to what happened tonight after all, what with all the old film stills they use (there's even a P.Ramlee burger poster). I just came home from Zal's place. Kat and I were at her place for a movie night. Watched P. Ramlee's film, Ali Baba Bujang Lapok . It's great entertainment, I love the P. School is under way, and many households have begun the ritual of making lunches for the children each day. It has been noted that the average child generates about 67 pounds of waste material each year from school lunches, as these are usually packaged in disposable materials. Fortunately, however, it is possible to greatly reduce this number while helping the environment. All that is needed is to eliminate the Plastic Bags, aluminum foil, paper napkins, lightweight Plastic bottles and replace them with containers that can be used over and over again. For example, substitute a cloth napkin, a strong (reusable) Plastic fork or spoon and a stainless-steel bottle for the beverage. Also, use heavy Plastic containers that can be reused many times for the sandwich or other foods. These simple steps will result in keeping many pounds of material out of our waste stream, which will then result in a large savings to Marblehead as the town will not have to pay to have that debris hauled away from our Transfer Station. Not only is this process beneficial to our town and environment but also to each family, as the average “waste-Free” lunch using reusable materials costs about $2.65, compared to $4.02 for one using disposable materials. ...

These days, you can't swing a dead cabbage without hitting a reusable bag. The darlings of the environmental movement (totes, not cabbages) are increasingly being provided Free or cheap to green-minded consumers. And they serve a good purpose: four or five reusable Bags, used at least once a week, can replace the use of 520 Plastic Bags each year. But if not used for their intended purpose, the Bags are hardly an environmental boon. Cotton and canvas Bags can require a lotta water and energy to manufacture and may be colored with toxic dyes. Nonwoven polypropylene totes require about 28 times as much energy to produce as standard Plastic Bags. Bags made from recycled material often cost more than those without. And perhaps most important, shifting ingrained shopping habits is easier said than done, as anyone knows who has forgotten to tote their totes to the store. That may take a while to change; as one marketing professor points out, it's not yet taboo to be seen carrying a Plastic bag. source:  The Wall Street Journal ...

Tenderloin merchants have joined forces with the city to launch a three-month pilot program known as the Good Neighbor Agreement: Bodega owners are hoping to help calm down the crackheads by refusing to sell liquor and cash checks between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. in a voluntary agreement that, in essence, delivers a financial blow to their business. (Losses can total in the hundreds of dollars per day, as reported alcohol sales range between 30-70 per hour in the morning; the city's emergency services see their heaviest alcohol-related traffic during that time, too.) Where once you might have had an unsightly glut of Plastic Bags, these days many people find themselves with an expanding collection of fabric ones. As a valuable opportunity for companies to broadcast their logo, they are often given away Free at events and festivals and as a reward for high spending in supermarkets, so the first thing to do is to stop accepting Free ones. Leave them behind in shops and give your extras away to friends; I suspect they'd also be snapped up by your local Freecycle group (www.freecycle.org). Click here to read in full ...

Westport, Connecticut, recently joined a small but growing number of communities to ban the use of Free Plastic shopping Bags within its borders. The new ordinance, which goes into effect early next year, would impose a $150 fine on any store that offers such Bags. WestportNow.com reports that citizens attending the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) vote on the ban overwhelmingly supported the measure. The RTM eventually voted 26 to 5 (with one abstention) in favor of the ordinance, and also rejected a proposal that would have made the ban effective only through Sept. 19 of next year.
