Related Articles Simultaneous Expression of Cathepsins B and K in pulmonary adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas predicts poor recurrence-Free and overall survival. Lung Cancer. 2008 Aug 28; Authors: Cordes C, Bartling B, Simm A, Afar D, Lautenschläger C, Hansen G, Silber RE, Burdach S, Hofmann HS PURPOSE: Patient survival after resection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) strongly correlated with the occurrence of distant metastasis. Cathepsins are members of the lysosomal cysteine proteases family and can support the metastatic process by degrading the extracellular matrix. The purpose of this study was to identify members of the Cathepsin family that correlate with recurrence-Free and overall survival of NSCLC patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Expression of 13 Cathepsins was examined using DNA-microarray technology in tumor tissues of 89 surgically treated NSCLC patients. All NSCLC samples were classified according to median Cathepsin Expression value into either a high or a low Expression group. All Cathepsin Expression groups were subjected to clinical prognostic analyses regarding survival and local as well as distant recurrences. RESULTS: Patients with high Cathepsin C tumor Expression showed higher tumor recurrence rate compared to patients with low Cathepsin C Expression (p=0.02). The tumor Expression of Cathepsins K and B significantly correlated with recurrence-Free and overall survival as determined by multivar ... Source: www.milkandcookies.com --- 27 days ago
This speech is from a debate at Hart House, University of Toronto. Christopher Hitchens' speech is in favor of decriminalizing hate speech, and why that Free speech must include hate speech. The debate (and lecture by Hitchens), which included members from Canada?s government, was a bill, then in discussions, regarding the decriminalization of hate speech, insofar as it is protected speech irrespective of its reprehensibility. engEDU ... The Western Standard is celebrating its own Free Speech & Expression Week. We’ve already published an excerpt from The Tyranny of Nice by Pete Vere and Kathy Shaidle and an excellent column by Pete Vere. There will be more articles to come defending Free speech and Expression, but we also need Western Standard readers to take action. You can help put Free speech and Expression on the national agenda during the 2008 English-language Leaders’ Debate on Thursday October 2nd. Email the moderator of the debate, Steve Paikin, at question@electiondebate08.ca and request that he ask Stephen Harper and the four other major political party leaders the following question: If elected, will you support an amendment to remove Section 13 from the Canadian Human Rights Act? ... The “separation of church and state,” such as it is, should keep the government from imposing a religion upon the people of this country. But regulations that squelch the speech of pastors? Standing up for their rights against the restrictive policies of political correctness…awesome! “There were several of us who felt that because of our convictions. about what the Bible says, we couldn’t agree to go along with a generic prayer policy,” said 13-year trooper Rex Carter, who works in Southwest Virginia. Republican lawmakers in the state concurred, arguing that the new restrictions are a violation of the First Amendment and an attack on Christianity. “For those of us who understand the importance of religion in American life and value the Free Expression of religion as one of our essential rights, the Kaine administration’s directive is disappointing and disheartening,” House Majority Leader H. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, said. “Censoring what these chaplains can say is a violation of their First Amendment right to freedom of Expression,” Del. Charles W. Carrico Sr., said. The former state trooper is currently putting together an online petition to get the police department to rescind the new rule. Hat tip: Michelle Malkin ... Source: www.bangkit.net --- 21 days ago

Generation of Mouse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Without Viral Vectors. Science. 2008 Oct 9; Authors: Okita K, Nakagawa M, Hyenjong H, Ichisaka T, Yamanaka S Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have been generated from mouse and human somatic cells by introducing Oct3/4, and Sox2 with either Klf4 and c-Myc or Nanog and Lin28 using retroviruses or lentiviruses. Patient-specific iPS cells could be useful in drug discovery and regenerative medicine. However, viral integration into the host genome increases the risk of tumorigenicity. Here we report the generation of mouse iPS cells without viral vectors. Repeated transfection of a single plasmid containing the cDNAs of Oct3/4, Sox2, and Klf4, together with a c-Myc Expression plasmid, into mouse embryonic fibroblasts resulted in iPS cells without evidence of plasmid integration, which produced teratomas when transplanted into mice and contributed to adult chimeras. The production of virus-Free iPS cells, albeit from embryonic fibroblasts, addresses a critical safety concern for potential use of iPS cells in regenerative medicine. Memo to all future vice presidential candidates: OK, rest easy. There's no need to have a precise case name embedded in your memory bank if and when you confront the now-infamous query that Katie Couric pitched Sarah Palin -- name a Supreme Court decision (other than, depending on your viewpoint, Roe vs. Wade) with which you disagree. Even if you have a case citation at the ready, don't use it, because almost always it's best not to sound like a lawyer (even if you are one). Now, if you happen to be a social conservative like Palin, court decisions banning school prayer and protecting the burning of the U.S. flag as an Expression of Free speech might merit mention. But here's an all-purpose answer for politicians of all stripes: the Dred Scott ruling. True, it's not exactly contemporary; the case of a slave (Scott) who pursued a legal avenue to gain his freedom was decided in early 1857. But still, you won't go wrong decrying the majority opinion that declared that no black -- slave or Free -- could be considered a U.S. citizen (and thus subject to its legal protections). The decision was of no small consequence ; most historians agree it helped hasten the Civil War. -- Don Frederick Still time to register at Twitter here to get instant alerts of all new Ticket items flashed straight to your cell. ...
